We often think of mathematics skills as beginning with counting. While this is one of the early skills we assess, there are other mathematical reasoning processes that are foundational to school mathematics. Research tells us that early mathematics skills are a better predictor of adult socioeconomic status (SES) than are childhood SES or reading achievement. Developing these foundational beginning processes is critical to establishing this firm foundation. In addition, students who struggle may have gaps in these beginning processes which impact many domains of mathematics. Supporting these learners to shore up these foundations is equally essential.
In part two of this two-part series, Dr. Sara Delano Moore reviews the five beginning processes and share a deeper look at how they impact student understanding of geometry and measurement. How does understanding attributes and comparing support the ability to measure? What are the roles of matching and sorting in identifying shapes? We share activities for young learners to establish the foundation as well as resources that could support intervention in these areas for school-age learners. About the Presenter
Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D. serves as Director of Professional Learning and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education. A fourth-generation educator, Sara’s work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning mathematics. Her interests include building mathematical comprehension and operation sense, incorporating high-quality literature into mathematics instruction, and connecting mathematics with engineering design and computational thinking. Sara has served as a classroom teacher of mathematics and science, a mathematics teacher educator at the University of Kentucky, Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement, and Director of Mathematics & Science at ETA Hand2Mind. She has authored numerous articles in professional journals and is a co-author of the Mathematize It! series of books. She is also a member of the Visible Learning for Mathematics writing team, including two volumes of the Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom series.
