About the Presenters
Nicola Hodkowski, Ph.D. is a senior researcher in mathematics education at Digital Promise. Her research is focused on two components: mathematics teachers’ process of change in thinking and practice as they shift toward a more conceptual emphasis, and how students conceptualize mathematics in content areas such as multiplicative and fractional reasoning.
Dr. Jeremy Roschelle applies learning science theories and methods to understand how, when, and why technology can enable improved teaching and learning. He is nationally and internationally recognized for groundbreaking research in computer-supported collaborative learning; learning with connected, mobile devices; and technology in mathematics learning. He has conducted rigorous efficacy research on personalized, adaptive learning, on online homework tools, and on dynamic visualizations for mathematics learning. His 25 years of research experience have led to over 125 publications and nine patents, resulting in 25,000 citations to his contributions. He is a fellow of the International Society of the Learning Sciences.
Carolyn Carhart-Quezada has been the head of teacher relations at Cignition for almost seven years. She was instrumental in building Cignition’s online tutoring business from scratch and currently leads several strategic initiatives focused on collaborative online learning. Carolyn advises and supports school districts in achieving maximum value for their students using Cignition’s online tutoring services. Additionally, she mentors tutors, guiding them on ways to facilitate a collaborative learning environment that gets students talking and thinking. Before joining Cignition, Carolyn was a co-founder of Basis Communications, which was sold to Intel Corporation, and was also a middle school science teacher for eight years at Evergreen School District in San Jose, California. She received a BSEE degree from UC Davis and an MS in management from Stanford University. She is currently on the Board of Directors at RAFT, Resource Area for Teachers.
About the Moderator
Dr. Mike Cohen’s career has straddled academic research and entrepreneurial activity focused on helping human-centered technologies achieve positive real-world impact. He earned his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley, published more than 80 academic papers and one book, was awarded 25 patents, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Dr. Cohen founded Cignition in 2014, working with educators and a neuroscientist, with a goal of helping all students, especially those from traditionally underserved communities, achieve a deep understanding of mathematics (and extending to ELA more recently)—both to enable further learning and to be prepared for success in the workplaces of the future. Those goals led to a key focus on conceptual understanding and on collaborative learning, as well as a focus on measurement and constant data-driven improvement of all components of the products and services Cignition delivers.
