The old adage says that math textbooks are sad because they have too many problems, but in truth, they’re sad because they have too many exercises. When students attempt challenging “problems worth solving,” they develop conceptual understanding and improve procedural fluency. When carefully selected and sensibly implemented, great problems allow struggling students to participate while still challenging your highest achievers.
