Meet Travis Edwards, a recent high school graduate whose desire to strengthen a basketball player’s shot led to his own patented invention. Travis created the Follow Through Fixer, a shooting aid that ensured better fundamental mechanics and proper form for basketball players like himself.
After hearing Travis’ story, the USPTO demonstrates how you can use the FREE activities and resources on EquIP HQ to introduce invention education and intellectual property to your classroom.

About the Presenters
Travis Edwards will be starting college this fall at the University of Texas at Austin, in the Electrical and Computer Engineering and Business (ECB) Honors Program, where he will receive two degrees—one in electrical engineering and the other in business. Travis is a passionate innovator and entrepreneur. He is a huge sports fan and enjoys watching and playing both football and basketball. His enthusiasm for both innovation and sports merged when he created the Follow Through Fixer. Travis’ basketball journey led him to create and patent this shooting aid that straightens players’ shots—ensuring fundamental mechanics and proper form. The Follow Through Fixer has helped Travis improve his basketball game, and he is eager to share it with others. Travis was born and raised in Austin, Texas. He plays the viola and piano and enjoys playing with his dog, Flash.
Juan Valentin is an Education Program Advisor in the Office of Education at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he is responsible for the development and implementation of educational projects of national and international scope, with a particular emphasis on directing and coordinating the development of STEM, design-thinking, or invention-focused projects infused with intellectual property concepts. Juan holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Clarkson University.
