In digital instruction, there is great interest in automating assistance or intervention for students who “get stuck.” Simple implementations include presenting step-by-step solutions of similar problems or watching brief videos on related content. More recently, various digital products now offer real-time, automated feedback for students, often in the form of text, and customized to a student’s answer history.
In this edWebinar, Amplify Education’s Dr. Zachary Wissner-Gross and Dr. Drew Corley examine various types and modalities of feedback, as well as richer combinations of audio, visuals, text, and manipulative interaction. Specific examples related to fractions are explored, with an eye toward getting students “unstuck” from common fractions misconceptions, while at the same time keeping them motivated.
Learn about the efficacies of various forms of real-time feedback for a better understanding of new ways that technology can support students who are learning fractions. There will be time to ask our presenters your questions after their presentation. About the Presenters
Dr. Zachary Wissner-Gross is a product manager at Amplify Education, where he and his team are actively developing Amplify Fractions, an adaptive, story-driven approach to mathematical instruction. Dr. Wissner-Gross previously co-founded School Yourself, an online learning platform used by hundreds of thousands of students around the world. With School Yourself, he launched the first two adaptive massive open online courses (AlgebraX and GeometryX) and authored three interactive textbooks in high school and college mathematics. He completed his undergraduate education in physics and biology at MIT, and went on to earn his doctorate in physics from Harvard University, where he was a Hertz Fellow and received the White Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Drew Corley is a senior learning scientist at Amplify Education, where he and his team are actively developing Amplify Fractions, an adaptive, story-driven approach to mathematical instruction. Dr. Corley is an NBPTS certified teacher in mathematics (EA) with seven years of classroom experience at the high school and collegiate level. During and after graduate studies, Dr. Corley has focused heavily on the topics of assessment and upper elementary- and middle-grades students’ learning and understanding of mathematics, particularly in the rational number domain. He received his BS in mathematics and MT in secondary mathematics education from the University of South Carolina, and went on to earn his doctorate in mathematics education from North Carolina State University.
