America’s 250th birthday arrives at a unique moment. The democratic experiment was always a bet on human capacity: the ability to reason, to question, to connect across difference. For 250 years, civic education has tried to cultivate that, even as each wave of new technology quietly made it harder. AI didn’t create this tension, but it has made it impossible to ignore.

About the Presenters
Emma Humphries, Ph.D., is the Chief Education Officer for iCivics. Founded in 2009 by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, iCivics is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing civic learning by providing educators and students with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to embrace and engage in our civic life together. In her role, Dr. Humphries leads iCivics’ research agenda, serves as its leading brand ambassador, particularly as a civics, history, and education expert, and ensures all instructional materials are accurate, objective, non-partisan, and contextual by shepherding iCivics’ Independent Review Council. Dr. Humphries has degrees in political science and education. In 2004, she received a James Madison Fellowship in recognition of her potential to be an outstanding educator of the American Constitution, and in 2012, she received her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Florida. Dr. Humphries is regularly quoted in national publications and invited to speak as a trusted expert in teaching civics and history in the United States, especially in our politically fraught climate. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Saint Simons Island, GA.
Eisha Buch is the Head of Teaching and Learning at Common Sense Media, where she leads the organization’s K–12 Digital Literacy & Well-Being Curriculum, a free, comprehensive curriculum now reaching millions of students, educators, and families across more than 85,000 schools worldwide. A former New York City teacher with over 15 years in education, Eisha has built a framework for helping young people stay fully human in a tech-saturated world: not by avoiding technology, but by thinking critically about its influence on their relationships, well-being, and sense of self. She is committed to making digital literacy as foundational as learning to read and write.
