One size does not fit all. When working with young children who use challenging behavior it is important to have a variety of strategies at your fingertips that meet the needs of each unique child. In this edWebinar we will spotlight five resilience-focused and research-based strategies that help to reduce challenging behavior while also building up a child’s strengths. Watch the Devereux Center for Resilient Children’s Lead Trainer and Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist Rachel Wagner as she brings these strategies to life. You may think you know these strategies, but Rachel sheds new light on their value.

- How encouragement done correctly and intentionally can promote prosocial behavior and increase a child’s confidence
- A four-step strategy called FLIP IT® that helps children become emotionally aware problem solvers
- How visual cues can be a powerful way to help children stay on track without your having to lose track
- How to develop play plans with children who have difficulty getting engaged and who are often “bouncing” all over the room
- A variety of self-soothing tools and how to offer them in ways that truly promote self-regulation

About the Presenter
Rachel Wagner is a national trainer and early childhood mental health specialist for the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. She is currently responsible for providing training and technical assistance to early childhood programs throughout the nation. Rachel received her bachelor’s degree in clinical sociology from Ithaca College in New York and received her Master’s in Social Work from The University of Albany. Rachel began her career as a preschool teacher for children who were deaf and hard of hearing. Rachel has worked in therapeutic preschool settings as a teacher and therapist. As a mental health coordinator and consultant, Rachel has extensive experience working with young children who use challenging behavior. Rachel is based in upstate New York where she worked as the coordinator of an Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Service. Most recently she has developed FLIP IT, a strategy to address challenging behaviors and has authored a book on FLIP IT, called FLIP IT: Transforming Challenging Behavior.
