School is Starting – Now What Do I Do About the Summer Slide?

                 VIEW THE WEBINAR

It’s a fact: without skills practice over the summer break, students can lose 30% of the knowledge they gained during the previous school year.  In the August webinar for Implementing the Common Core State Standards in Math, presenter Kevin Dykema explored strategies that can help you overcome summer slide. He gave examples of how you can get started with the school year and build in review time along the way.  He showed creative examples for incorporating review time into the beginning of and throughout the school year.  He used tools that provide teachers with an activity-based review using manipulatives.  Additionally he discussed ways to get parents involved in skills practice at home so that students are reviewing even in their down time.  Watch the webinar by clicking the image below. This program is presented by Kevin Dykema, who has taught 8th grade math for the past 17 years and has also taught several undergraduate math courses for pre-service elementary teachers at Western Michigan University. He was awarded the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Director’s Award in 2007 for outstanding contribution and leadership in mathematics education and has served as a regional director for the organization. He is also currently the annual conference chair for the organization.
