Riding the CCSS Math Train: Inspiring Parents to Jump on Board – and Stay There!

With summer vacation around the corner it is important to keep students learning outside the classroom.  Presenter Bon Crowder, Math Mom and co-creator of the That’s Math! website, gave attendees a complete toolkit to engage parents and families in math learning in this month’s Implementing Common Core Standards in Math webinar.  Topics discussed include:

1. Interpreting Common Core State Standards into “parent language.”
2. Creating CCSS targeted family engagement activities.
3. Giving parents tools to engage in positive math talk.
4. Communicating with parents using various media.

Watch the webinar to find out how to avoid the “summer slump.”

Quotes from the session:

There is a disconnect lots of parent have from the reality of the Math CCSS. Many have been told that it has no connection to the “real” math they learned as kids. How do we get them to see this is NOT the case?”

“We have to be pro-active in showing parents where the standards are relevant – reassuring them that the basic facts are still there, for example – and what we’re doing better in these standards – building understanding about why as well”

“Love the idea of teaching the parents.  I know many have math anxiety from their own childhood..  If we can help the parents overcome their own anxieties, they will be better able to help their children.”

“Thank you!!! I am planning for engagement  activities for the next year. This is a great start. I will check the archives.”
