What Every Parent Should Know About the Common Core State Standards
The Common Core State Standards are an ambitious effort to ensure all students graduate high school ready for college or a career. Forty-four states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense schools have all adopted the standards. However, there is a lot of confusion about what exactly the standards are—and what they are not. In some cases that confusion is intentional, as politicians use the standards to advance their agendas. In other cases it is not, as frustrated parents and educators struggle to redefine teaching and learning in a new age. So what is the reality of the Common Core State Standards? In this edWeb.net webinar, Anne O’Brien, Deputy Director of Learning First Alliance, discussed what parents need to know about the standards, dispelled key myths and answered questions about issues of interest. The following topics were discussed: How the standards were developed and adopted; The difference between standards and curriculum; Challenges with implementation; Common Core assessments. Watch Anne for a conversation that built awareness of this important issue in K–12 education.
