Studies suggest that young children engage in substantial yet informal mathematical thinking during play. Brian Mowry, Manager of Curriculum and Instruction at Frog Street Press, discusses how exploratory and dramatic play contributes to young children’s cognitive development and how to bridge this learning to support mathematical competencies related to numeracy, shape and spatial awareness, measurement, classification, and patterning. Viewers will:

  1. Review stages of cognitive development
  2. Understand ways that play contributes to this development
  3. Learn strategies to support and extend young children’s exploratory and dramatic play to address more formal mathematical outcomes

This program is of interest to early childhood educators, administrators, and directors.
