Schools implementing social-emotional learning (SEL) saw an 11-percentile increase in academic achievement as measured by standardized testing (Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011). Leadership is key to the success of any schoolwide initiative, especially a strategy like SEL that may be perceived as competing for academic instructional time.

This edWebinar features two school principals who embrace SEL as a high priority for their schools. They have seen the profound impact of SEL on their students and school climate, brought SEL into all aspects of school life, and successfully advocated for SEL resources. This presentation will share practical experiences and lessons learned while they led SEL schoolwide implementations. Viewers will:

  • Investigate SEL as a foundation for effective teaching and learning
  • Explore practical considerations for implementing schoolwide SEL
  • Investigate creative strategies for informing and building staff SEL skills
  • Discuss strategies for integrating SEL into everyday school life

About the Presenters

Darice Johnson has been in education for 21 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a master’s degree in teaching from The Evergreen State College. Currently, she is in her third year as Principal of Meridian Middle School in the Kent School District, Kent, Washington. She previously served as assistant principal of Cascade Middle School in the Auburn School District. Darice taught for Seattle Public Schools at the African American Academy and Madrona K–8. In addition, she taught sixth grade history in the Rainier Scholars program. In 2001, Darice was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in South Africa and Swaziland. She went on an education mission trip to Kenya and Ethiopia with Cultural Reconnection in 2007. She was awarded the prestigious KCTS 9 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Education in 2003.

 

Fatima Rogers is Principal at Charles W. Henry School in Philadelphia, PA. The school is implementing a comprehensive school climate strategy, including SEL and restorative practices. Fatima’s expertise as a school administrator, her inclusive leadership strategies, and her understanding that school climate is the foundation for academic success combine to make her an excellent presenter on the real-world issues and benefits of implementing SEL.

 

About the Host

Juliet Kandel has worked in SEL, violence prevention, and substance abuse prevention since 1989. Formerly a district and school-level prevention coordinator, she has been with the nonprofit Committee for Children since 2003, where she is the implementation and training manager. She supports systemic SEL implementations across the country through consultation, strategic partnerships, and professional development.
