Computational-thinking skills include seeing patterns, creating rules or algorithms, making abstractions, and decomposing a mathematical structure into component parts. These skills are closely tied to many applications of mathematics as well as to the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Whether during in-person instruction or remote learning, teachers and students must continue to develop the mathematical practices; computational thinking provides an engaging context for this work. Students will explore engaging mathematical problems, develop the practices, and build foundation skills for careers which require computational thinking.

In this second edWebinar of a two-part series, Dr. Sara Delano Moore, Director of Professional Learning at ORIGO Education, shares strategies for developing the mathematical practices through computational thinking. The session will look at computational-thinking tasks from the perspective of the practices, in both face-to-face and virtual settings for instruction. How do we help students decontextualize their thinking in order to develop abstractions? How do we support students to see structure and make use of repeated reasoning to create algorithms? Watch Sara to explore the mathematical practices through the lens of computational thinking.

Sara Delano MooreAbout the Presenter

Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D. serves as Director of Professional Learning and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education. A fourth-generation educator, Sara’s work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning mathematics. Her interests include building mathematical comprehension and operation sense, incorporating high-quality literature into mathematics instruction, and connecting mathematics with engineering design and computational thinking. Sara has served as a classroom teacher of mathematics and science, a mathematics teacher educator at the University of Kentucky, Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement, and Director of Mathematics & Science at ETA Hand2Mind. She has authored numerous articles in professional journals and is a co-author of the Mathematize It! series of books. She is also a member of the Visible Learning for Mathematics writing team, including two volumes of the Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom series.
