Join us for part one of this two-part series focused on developing, maintaining, and extending fluency in mathematics.

Fluency in mathematics means more than fast and accurate recall of facts. Yes, students must know their facts from memory, but learning them by memorization is not helpful. Knowing from memory means learning from deliberately sequenced, strategy-based instruction. Knowing from memory means shorter periods of practice over a longer period of time. Being fluent means moving beyond basic facts to using that same reasoning with larger whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. How do we support this for our students?

In this edWebinar, review research about fluency and memorization and share strategies for helping students develop fluency for the long run, putting this research into practice. We share appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction and show how those strategies extend to other classes of numbers. We will also discuss the role of games as an at-home tool for developing fluency. Watch Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D., in this edWebinar to think deeply about building fluency in addition and subtraction.

This recorded edWebinar will be of benefit to kindergarten through middle school teachers and school and district leaders.
