The makerspace movement is increasing each day across the United States and around the world. The need to increase the number of students graduating and entering the STEM field is also on the rise. One key to the success of each of these challenges is design thinking. In this edWebinar, Dr. Salvatore Menzo, Superintendent of Wallingford Public Schools, CT, provides authentic information on design thinking and its impact on all student learning. Through sharing key elements of a design thinking approach, viewers will develop a better understanding of how it can be applied in all classrooms to increase student engagement and success.
Design thinking provides a context for educators to create a personalized, constructivist learning opportunity for all students. Students are encouraged to DREAM big, DESIGN creatively and DO what innovators, creators and engineers embark on every day. The curriculum also serves as a foundation on which makerspaces can be built to ensure their use, relevance and sustainability.
Now more than ever, when our world continues to provide us with challenges, you will want to watch this recorded edWebinar that will help contextualize what you are doing to increase student engagement and interest in problem-finding and -solving.
About the Presenter
Dr. Salvatore Menzo is the superintendent of Wallingford Public Schools in Connecticut.
He started his career as a middle school English/language arts teacher. Since his teaching days, he served as a building administrator at the middle level. In 2005, Dr. Menzo became the youngest superintendent in the country at the time, and since then has spent over half of his educational career in that role. Dr. Menzo has lead Wallingford Public Schools on its path toward achieving the Wallingford 100–100% Community Involvement and 100% Student Engagement to lead to 100% Student Success. As a result, Dr. Menzo facilitated with staff and student partnerships in China, Argentina and Germany.
Nationally, Dr. Menzo has leveraged a partnership with Office Depot and IBM to provide revenue for the school district while accessing state-of-the-art resources for staff, students and families.
