While standards relating to fractions typically conclude by fifth or sixth grade, fractions themselves continue to show up everywhere in more advanced mathematics. In this edWebinar, Zachary Wissner-Gross, PhD, Product Manager at Amplify Education, will explore a variety of more advanced fractions-related concepts that make for great lessons in middle school, high school, or beyond.

We’ll begin by thinking through some alternatives to fractions. After all, fractions are really just a convention we’ve settled on for writing and thinking about rational numbers—there’s more than one way to describe values between whole numbers. (It will become apparent why some of these ways aren’t as popular as fractions!)

From there, we’ll visualize fractional operations from addition through exponentiation, prove that certain numbers are irrational, sum geometric series of fractions, and explore the dimensionality of fractals. You are guaranteed to see fractions in at least one new and exciting way to bring back to your classroom.

This session will benefit middle school math teachers as well as upper elementary educators looking for a fractions challenge. There will be time to get your questions answered after the presentation.

Special Invitation: All edWebinar participants are invited to try Amplify Fractions for free through June 30, 2018. Amplify Fractions is a digital math program laser-focused on helping students deeply understand fractions. Your free trial also allows you to set up your students to access the program. Sign up for your free trial now! (This offer is available to anyone who pre-registers, attends live, or watches the recording.)
