We are in dramatic times, according to Dr. Christina Kishimoto, Founder and CEO of Voice4Equity, LLC and Clinical Professor at the University of Southern California. In the past decade, public school classrooms transformed from having a majority of white students to mostly students of color. We have a diverse student body full of aspiring young minds who include LGBTQ, multiracial, multicultural, and multilingual identities. No other time in U.S. history has this been more evident.

Congress is entering a period of intense activity before it departs for its August summer recess, which it terms a “District Work Period.” Before August, the House Appropriations Committee intends to mark up all of its FY22 spending bills and Congress will attempt to reach an agreement on and perhaps even pass a trillion-dollar infrastructure package. Waiting in the wings is a second multi-trillion-dollar budget reconciliation package that could contain major education initiatives including funding for school infrastructure, free community college, and teacher professional development.
It’s a common story: the energetic principal who comes into a school, revamps the curriculum, creates innovative learning practices, and then leaves with no sustainability plan. Or, while the kids in that one school thrive, others across the district are left behind. Unfortunately, many schools and districts are still relying on individuals or looking for that magic program rather than developing educational systems that provide a high-quality, modern education for all students.
