The current emphasis on active shooter response rather than an all-hazards, preventative approach to violence in schools results in unintended consequences which negatively impact school communities.
In this edWebinar, Dr. Amy Klinger and Amanda Klinger of The Educator’s School Safety Network explore the implications of student surveillance instead of support, “security theater” instead of actual safety, and intimidating or traumatizing instead of empowering teachers and students. Strategies for effective violence prevention and response that improve a school’s culture, student engagement, and academic achievement are explored.

About the Presenters
Dr. Amy Klinger and Amanda Klinger are nationally recognized as expert trainers, consultants, and authors in the area of school safety and crisis management.
Dr. Klinger is first and foremost an educator, with 28 years of service as a teacher, building principal, and college professor. In addition to her work as Founder and Director of Programs for the Educator’s School Safety Network (ESSN), a national non-profit, Dr. Klinger is also an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at Ashland University in Ohio.
As an attorney, Amanda Klinger brings a practitioner’s perspective to the critical legal issues associated with school crisis response and planning. Ms. Klinger is the Director of Operations for ESSN, a professional instructor at Ashland University, and has co-authored numerous articles and studies with Dr. Klinger, most recently their new book Keeping Students Safe Every Day.
