earlychildhoodIn this edWeb.net webinar for the Early Childhood Learning Solutions community, occupational therapist and NAEYC presenter, Dr. Marianne Gibbs, shared activities and rationale for the WHATs, HOWs, and WHYs of fine motor skill development as it relates to children 3-6 years old. Fun and easy-to-implement activities and strategies were demonstrated with supporting rationale for improving students’ future handwriting efficiency.

In this session, Marianne explored fine motor and sensory aspects of development, which impact future efficient handwriting and compositional writing. The webinar covered physical development concepts, such as shoulder stability and separation of hand, to promote fine motor development; taught efficient and inefficient pencil grasps; showed educators how to determine and implement age appropriate activities to develop an efficient pencil grasp; and instructed attendees on facilitating appropriate scissor skill development.
