SUMMARY:Teaching in the Time of COVID: The Challenges and Opportunities for Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Patricia A. Jennings\, Professor of Education\, University of Virginia; and Ashley Bullock\, Teacher\, Chesapeake Public Schools (VA)\, and doctoral student\, University of Virginia\nModerated by Chad S. Ratliff\, MBA\, M.Ed.\, Principal\, Albemarle Lab Schools (VA) \nSponsored by Norton Books in Education \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn her new book\, Teacher Burnout Turnaround: Strategies for Empowered Educators\, Dr. Tish Jennings presents a matrix of stress factors that lead to burnout and shows how teachers can tackle the sources of stress at each pressure point. Many of these stressors are artifacts of the old “factory model” of the school system that are no longer relevant\, in light of our modern understanding of learning and developmental science. The COVID-19 pandemic has upended this archaic system and added new stressors to the job of teaching our children and youths. However\, this disruption may provide an opportunity to transform this system to better meet the needs of our students and improve our working environment going forward. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Jennings is joined by high school teacher and University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development doctoral student\, Ashley Bullock\, and Chad Ratliff\, Principal of an innovative public charter school in Albemarle County\, VA\, to discuss the challenges of teaching during COVID and how they might open doors to reimagining our school systems and how teachers can become empowered to promote these changes. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Patricia (Tish) Jennings is a professor of education at the University of Virginia and an internationally recognized leader in the fields of social and emotional learning and mindfulness in education. Her research places a specific emphasis on teacher stress and how it impacts the social and emotional context of the classroom. Dr. Jennings recently led the team that developed CARE\, a mindfulness-based professional development program shown to significantly improve teacher well-being\, classroom interactions and student engagement in the largest randomized controlled trial of a mindfulness-based intervention designed specifically to address teacher occupational stress. She is the editor of Norton Books in Education’s Social and Emotional Learning Solutions series and the author of the best-selling Mindfulness for Teachers\, Mindfulness in the Pre-K – 5 Classroom\, The Trauma-Sensitive Classroom\, and Teacher Burnout Turnaround. \n \nAshley Bullock is a teacher at Chesapeake Public Schools (VA)\, and a doctoral student at the University of Virginia. She jokes that she is a slightly together\, slightly a mess educator who is trying to find the best practices to support all her students. Having worked in diverse schools\, she firmly believes that supporting teachers and empowering students is the best way to change the world for the better. Her passions include educational topics such as equity in education\, trauma-informed practices and vicarious trauma to teachers. In her off time\, you can find her at the beach\, traveling\, watching sports\, and eating really good pizza. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nChad Ratliff has been Principal of Murray High School and Community Public Charter School (Community Middle) in Virginia since 2017\, previously serving as Director of Innovation and Instructional Programs for Albemarle County Public Schools. He is also a teacher in the upper school\, facilitating a dual enrollment course in entrepreneurship and the theory of knowledge course in the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. Chad is co-author of Timeless Learning: How Imagination\, Observation\, and Zero-Based Thinking Change Schools (Jossey-Bass\, 2018). He also authored the foreword\, “On Liberating Teachers\,” in University of Virginia Professor Dr. Patricia Jennings’ book\, Teacher Burnout Turnaround: Strategies for Empowered Educators (Norton\, 2020). In 2017\, the National School Boards Association named him one of the “20 to Watch” educational leaders in the country. \n \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Teacher HELP! community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nNorton Books in Education publishes breakthrough professional development books for K-12 teachers and administrators from leading voices in the field.

The everyday learning environment has taken on a whole new meaning as you and your students have pivoted from in-person\, to remote\, to hybrid learning (and have sometimes bridged these gaps multiple times). Many students lost almost a full semester of learning; some lost more. And while no child has gone unaffected by these educational gaps\, those who were struggling prior to school closures have been hit the hardest\, further widening already-existing literacy achievement gaps. It’s now urgent that we move forward from these learning losses\, and ensure that every child\, especially those who struggle most\, has the most essential building block for their literacy journey—a strong foundation for reading. \nWatch Diana Petschauer\, Managing Director and AT Consultant\, Assistive Technology for Education\, and Texthelp’s Kathleen Colburn\, Senior Product Manager\, as they explore strategies and tools to empower struggling readers in a blended learning environment. Swenson (Afghanistan). Lieutenant Colonel Swenson was awarded the Medal of Honor for risking his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving in Afghanistan. \nInterviews with Medal of Honor Recipients are part of the Medal of Honor Character Development Program\, a free program that helps middle – high school students build character and promotes responsible citizenship. The Medal of Honor is awarded for “gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of one’s life\, above and beyond the call of duty.” Those awarded it drew upon their deepest convictions and values in the most challenging of circumstances. Their examples of courage and sacrifice can inspire us as we face our own challenges. \nThen-Captain Swenson risked his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving in Afghanistan in 2009. Enemy fighters had ambushed Captain Swenson’s combat team as it moved on foot into the village of Ganjgal for a meeting with village elders. As the enemy unleashed grenades\, mortar\, and machine gun fire\, Captain Swenson immediately returned fire and directed the response of his Afghan Border Police while simultaneously calling in support. He coordinated air assets\, indirect fire support\, and medical evacuation helicopter support. Captain Swenson ignored enemy radio transmissions demanding surrender and maneuvered to render medical aid to a wounded fellow soldier. With complete disregard for his own safety\, he then led a team into the kill zone to recover more wounded and search for four missing comrades. His exceptional leadership and stout resistance against the enemy during six hours of continuous fighting rallied his teammates and effectively disrupted the enemy’s assault. \nHere are ways you can share this inspiring story and interview with your middle – high school students: \n\nShare Lieutenant Colonel Swenson’s story with your class.\nWatch the edWebinar above to share and discuss with your class.\nTake advantage of the free lessons provided by the Medal of Honor Character Development Program. For shortened activities specifically for you to use while learning has shifted to an online format\, follow the Character Development Program on Facebook.\nPlease note that students are not permitted to log into the edWebinar\, to protect student privacy.\n\nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to all teachers and school and district leaders for their middle – high school students. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nCaptain William D. Swenson distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving during combat operations against an armed enemy in Kunar Province\, Afghanistan on September 8\, 2009. On that morning\, more than 60 well-armed\, well-positioned enemy fighters ambushed Captain Swenson’s combat team as it moved on foot into the village of Ganjgal for a meeting with village elders. As the enemy unleashed a barrage of rocket-propelled grenade\, mortar and machine gun fire\, Captain Swenson immediately returned fire and coordinated and directed the response of his Afghan Border Police\, while simultaneously calling in suppressive artillery fire and aviation support. After the enemy effectively flanked Coalition Forces\, Captain Swenson repeatedly called for smoke to cover the withdrawal of the forward elements. Surrounded on three sides by enemy forces inflicting effective and accurate fire\, Captain Swenson coordinated air assets\, indirect fire support and medical evacuation helicopter support to allow for the evacuation of the wounded. Captain Swenson ignored enemy radio transmissions demanding surrender and maneuvered to render medical aid to a wounded fellow soldier. Captain Swenson stopped administering aid long enough to throw a grenade at approaching enemy forces\, before assisting with moving the soldier for air evacuation. With complete disregard for his own safety\, Captain Swenson unhesitatingly led a team in an unarmored vehicle into the kill zone\, exposing himself to enemy fire on at least two occasions\, to recover the wounded and search for four missing comrades. After using aviation support to mark locations of fallen and wounded comrades\, it became clear that ground recovery of the fallen was required due to heavy enemy fire on helicopter landing zones. Captain Swenson’s team returned to the kill zone another time in a Humvee. Captain Swenson voluntarily exited the vehicle\, exposing himself to enemy fire\, to locate and recover three fallen Marines and one fallen Navy corpsman. His exceptional leadership and stout resistance against the enemy during six hours of continuous fighting rallied his teammates and effectively disrupted the enemy’s assault. Captain William D. Swenson’s extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself\, Task Force Phoenix\, 1st Battalion\, 32nd Infantry Regiment\, 3rd Brigade Combat Team\, 10th Mountain Division and the United States Army. \n\n \nAbout the Host \nCathy Ehlers Metcalf joined the Medal of Honor Character Development Program as Vice President of Education in 2015 after serving as a Regional Curriculum Trainer. She now serves as the Executive Director of Education for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. Cathy taught college-level writing for over 33 years in Southern California. Cathy’s father was a World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. SUMMARY:Creating Confident Writers: Responding to Student Needs in Class\, Online\, and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Troy Hicks\, Professor of English and Education\, Author\, and Consultant\, Central Michigan University; and Andrew Schoenborn\, Author and English Teacher\, Mount Pleasant Public Schools (MI)\nModerated by Tess Reiche\, Marketing Director\, Writable \nSponsored by Writable \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThe conversations about what students “need” to know as writers as they move from high school to college have become perennial. In this edWebinar\, we make this pivot\, shifting the conversation from the “what” they need to know\, to think critically and creatively about the “why” and the “how.” Leaning on the Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing\, we take an approach that focuses on developing the habits of mind for successful writers. By helping students create their own writing goals and pursue their own inquiry\, teachers become coaches. \nBy providing a number of tips and tools\, we will explore how teachers can be flexible and responsive to the needs of middle and high school writers in light of remote learning\, emerging technologies\, and curricular demands. \nBy looking at three particular writing assignments (reading response blogs\, multimodal non-fiction websites\, and Pecha Kucha-style talks) we will explore authentic ways to empower students to view themselves as writers by using mentor texts\, encouraging digital interactions\, and publishing opportunities beyond the classroom. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to middle school through higher education teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, curriculum and instruction directors and coordinators\, instructional coaches\, tech directors\, and teachers on special assignment. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Troy Hicks is Professor of English and Education at Central Michigan University (CMU).
