SUMMARY:AASA Leading for Equity: Courageous Leadership – A Systems Approach to Equity
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Tammy Campbell\, Superintendent\, Federal Way Public Schools (WA)\nModerated by Dr. Valerie Truesdale\, Assistant Executive Director\, AASA\, The School Superintendents Association \nHosted by AASA\, The School Superintendents Association \nAASA’s Leadership Network\, providing premier professional learning for educational leaders \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThe work of closing opportunity gaps for students of color and realizing excellence for EVERY scholar can be done! All too often we read about equity\, race and inclusion with few real and tangible examples of what it can look like. This edWebinar is designed to provide multiple examples of what equity looks like when it is embedded throughout a school district. It requires superintendents\, school boards\, principals\, support staff\, and central office teams to hold an unshakeable belief in the potential and brilliance of every child. This belief and value are the basis for working in a systemic\, collaborative\, and focused manner to transform the culture of our districts and schools. \nDr. Tammy Campbell spends time outlining Federal Way Public Schools’ (FWPS) journey in closing gaps for all scholars. Viewers will reflect on the work they are leading in their districts and schools while considering areas to build out more broadly and more deeply to ensure equitable access and individual scholar success. \nEssential questions include: \n\nHow did district leaders assess where they are in establishing a vision of what equity looks like in your district?\nWhat are board\, superintendent\, central office\, and principal best practices and implications for your work as equity leaders?\nWhat are key strategic actions to ensure equity is woven throughout your organization?\nWhy should districts share the promising outcomes in FWPS as a result of systems leadership focused on equity?\n\nThis recorded presentation will be of particular value to school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nNow in her sixth year as Superintendent of Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS)\, Dr. Tammy Campbell has led the district in positioning its scholars to seize very bright futures. Under her leadership\, FWPS has realized both regional- and state-level accolades with the FWPS School Board of Directors named as the Large District Board of the Year by the Washington State School Directors’ Association\, and Dr. Campbell having been recognized as one of the 25 most influential leaders in the Seattle Region by Seattle Magazine. \nHowever\, her most impactful achievements include: \n\nGraduation rates have increased for the last eight consecutive years\, currently at 88.2% for the class of 2020. This includes significant narrowing of graduation gaps for scholars of color.\nFWPS has received regional recognition for college-going rates and attainment.\nAs the most diverse district in the state\, FWPS has some of the highest numbers of scholars enrolled in advanced placement courses and those who persist in college during their second year.\nScholars in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses are earning industry-recognized certifications and are participating in field trips and internships offered at Microsoft\, Boeing\, STEM companies\, and more.\nScholar Voice as a ubiquitous lever at all schools including every principal meeting with their scholar advisories every month to examine data\, elicit strategies\, and gather feedback on continuous improvement.\nIn 2017\, the community supported the passage of an unprecedented bond package of almost half a billion dollars—the largest bond measure in FWPS history and one of the largest in the region.\nA systems approach to racial equity where EVERY staff member engages in professional learning on dismantling systems that close doors for scholars of color and other scholars who are furthest away from educational justice—FWPS has a culture where they lead for equity throughout the organization.\n\nDr. Campbell’s upbringing as a young girl in the Louisiana Delta\, in a time of de facto segregation\, convinced her that schools are “game changers” for students and communities. That awareness led her to accomplish many firsts in her family including high school valedictorian\, first college graduate\, and first to receive her doctorate. At every milestone\, she would reflect on her journey and the key people who lifted her toward her dreams. Almost always without fail\, they were teachers who lifted her up and believed she could do incredible things. Dr. Campbell began her career in education as a classroom teacher and brings over 21 years of experience to her role as Superintendent of Federal Way Public Schools. She has served as a principal\, executive director of teaching and learning\, executive director of instructional programs\, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning\, and higher education faculty. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nDr. Valerie Truesdale joined AASA early in 2019 as the assistant executive director responsible for guiding leadership development services and programs. With years of experience in the superintendency and roles in instructional technology\, she knows that AASA’s Leadership Network can be a substantial resource for school leaders trying to keep pace with the rapidly changing delivery of K-12 education. \n \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Leading for Equity community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n \nThe AASA Leadership Network drives superintendent success\, innovation\, and growth\, shaping the future of public education while preparing students for what’s next. We are the largest\, most diverse network of superintendents in America. Passionate and committed\, we connect educational leaders to the professional learning\, leadership development\, relationships\, and partnerships they need to ensure a long career of impact.

SUMMARY:10 Ways to Reimagine the Role of Educator as Literacy Leader
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Terrie Noland\, Ph.D.\, CALP\, Vice President\, Educator Initiatives\, Learning Ally \nSponsored by Learning Ally \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn education\, the concept of “leader” is often reserved for administrators. This false concept has allowed many classroom teachers and specialists to assume they do not have a voice and capacity to impact and influence others. This edWebinar hones in on ten different leadership principles that will move an educator from a successful leader to a significant leader. \nSuccessful leadership says that you’ve accomplished something for yourself. Significant leadership says that you’ve made a significant impact on others. Transformational actions based on these ten principles\, such as understanding an influence framework and how to build relationship capital\, will impact teams to build collective efficacy. These principles might even challenge assumptions about what it means to lead for administrators and classroom educators by breaking the mold of leadership in education. \nViews will understand why literacy leadership matters in education. They will be introduced to the collective efficacy concept that supports the idea that everyone in a school or district can be involved in efforts to promote literacy. They’ll also identify which of the ten ways they could move toward significant literacy leadership that impacts struggling readers through an A.C.T. 24 model of action. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK-12 teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nListen. Learn. Teach. It’s that simple. Terrie Noland uses this philosophy as an innovator and a motivator\, and it’s evident as she leads\, coaches and mentors thousands of K-12 educators about the science of reading each year. She has a unique perspective on the need to unify all stakeholders around a vision for education to smash the reading divide for the millions of struggling readers. Her daily mission is to add value to educators to help influence transformational changes in school districts across the country by addressing the needs of marginalized students. Terrie seeks to share her expertise and passion\, to encourage\, and to illuminate a path towards success and measurable outcomes. \nIf you looked at Terrie’s resume\, you would be confused. Her undergraduate and graduate degree work placed her in the field of criminal justice. However\, it was through continuous listening and learning that led her on a journey in education starting out in preschool teaching and administration\, then becoming a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP)\, and currently working towards a Ph.D. in literacy and educational leadership from St. John’s University. Terrie is also a John Maxwell certified speaker and coach. \nAs Vice President of Educator Initiatives at Learning Ally\, Terrie works to ignite enthusiasm and excitement by building champion educators and administrators on creating cultures of literacy and learning. \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Empowering Struggling Readers community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nLearning Ally is a leading education solutions organization committed to transforming the lives of struggling learners. SUMMARY:Science and Literacy Instruction: You Don’t Have to Choose
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rebecca Abbott\, Professional Learning Lead\, UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science \nSponsored by Amplify Science \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nHow is a knowledge-rich curriculum essential for the development of literacy proficiency? How can making room for science in grades K-5 enable you to prepare your students to make sense of the world in which we live while strengthening their abilities to read\, write\, listen and speak? Join Rebecca Abbott from the University of California\, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science to explore the relationship between literacy and science instruction. \nIn this edWebinar\, Rebecca examines how the shifts in the science standards invite convergence with ELA and math. She shares research that shows how this can not only help strategically make room for science in packed instructional calendars but also results in more effective ways for students to learn both science and literacy. Attendees will see examples to help them envision how a focus on science can help achieve instructional goals in their classrooms and remotely. \nSo much of what scientists do is reading\, writing\, listening\, and speaking in order to obtain\, evaluate\, and communicate information about the natural world. To prepare the next generation of scientists and critical thinkers\, we need to combine what we know about excellent literacy instruction with what we know about excellent science instruction. Situating literacy instruction in a content area like science brings with it several benefits: \n\nIt helps students develop ways of thinking that are characteristic to the discipline.\nIt offers opportunities to refine sense-making skills that are essential to both disciplines.\nIt provides an authentic reason for reading and writing—to better understand science ideas under study.\n\nThis recorded  edWebinar will be of interest to kindergarten through middle school teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders.  \n \nAbout the Presenter \nRebecca Abbott is the professional learning lead for the Learning Design Group at UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science. For the last seven years\, she has been providing support for teachers and district leaders implementing Learning Design Group approaches and curricula\, and currently leads the Hall’s professional learning efforts nationwide for their research-based and NGSS-designed curriculum\, Amplify Science. She taught for 17 years in the San Francisco Bay Area\, including serving as an interdisciplinary K–5 instructional coach in Oakland\, CA. \n \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Teaching Next Generation Scientists community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nAmplify is dedicated to collaborating with educators to create learning experiences that are rigorous and riveting for all students. We feel frustrated\, annoyed\, overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next. The normality in education has been shattered\, and while COVID-19 has been the catalyst for the process\, the changes both inside and outside of education have been constant over the last 20 years. The realities of COVID-19\, economic uncertainty and emphasis on systemic racism and inequities have brought school districts across the United States to a crossroads. Systems must learn to adapt with a future-focused vision and an ability to apply innovative principles and processes to their work. We are not powerless in this challenge; we must be the ones to act. \nIn this session\, Ray McNulty shares strategies and practices helpful to the challenges that leaders\, educators and students are facing. Schools and districts have never been more challenged in supporting the needs of students while navigating a world that is Volatile\, Uncertain\, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA). One school district leading the way is Middletown Public Schools in Connecticut\, led by Dr. Michael Conner whose focus on building trust has enabled movement throughout the system. His emphasis has been centered on several important strategies\, polarity management\, professional learning\, systemic agility and many others. Action by leaders matters more now than ever before\, and just because the future is uncertain\, it doesn’t mean you can’t influence it. \nThis recorded presentation will be of particular value to school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nRaymond J. McNulty is the president of the National Dropout Prevention Center (NDPC) and the Successful Practices Network (SPN). During his tenure\, he focused on aligning the Department of Education’s work on three key issues: early education\, educator quality\, and secondary school reform. \nRay is a presenter at the state\, national\, and international levels on the need for school systems to accept the challenges that lie ahead. He is committed to raising performance standards for both teachers and students and to building solid connections between schools and their communities. Ray believes strongly that education systems cannot wait for the children and challenges to arrive at school; rather\, schools need to reach out and help forge solutions. \n  \n \nMichael T. Conner\, Ed.D. is the superintendent for Middletown Public Schools in Middletown\, CT. Previously\, he served as Chief Academic Officer (Norwalk\, CT)\, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning (Willimantic\, CT) and Principal of Augusta Lewis Troup School (New Haven\, CT). Also hear about the process used to ensure that high school graduates have a high school diploma and a “plus.” The goal of the Diploma Plus Initiative for Petersburg City Public Schools is to increase access to high-demand career pathways\, to remove barriers to postsecondary success and to positively impact the area’s workforce development initiative. \nEssential questions include: \n\nWhat do students need in their homes to support their learning and how do districts leverage resources to meet those needs?\nHow do school districts ensure students are receiving access and support that they did not have before the pandemic?\nWhy is working with the community essential to finding missing pieces in student learning\, filling the gaps\, and celebrating student success?\n\nThis recorded presentation will be of particular value to school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Maria Pitre-Martin was appointed Superintendent of Petersburg City Public Schools on July 1\, 2019.
