SUMMARY:Using Translanguaging to Center Emergent Bilinguals in Literacy Practices
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cecilia Espinosa\, Ph.D.\, Author; and Laura Ascenzi-Moreno\, Ph.D.\, Author \nSponsored by Scholastic Education \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn their new book Rooted in Strength: Using Translanguaging to Grow Multilingual Readers and Writers\, Cecilia M. Espinosa\, Ph.D. and Laura Ascenzi-Moreno\, Ph.D. demonstrate how emergent bilinguals (students who speak two or more languages in their daily lives) thrive when they are able to use “translanguaging” to tap the full power of their linguistic and sociocultural repertoires. Translanguaging has been instrumental in shifting the ways that educators view the language resources that students bring. Yet\, many teachers are unaware of how to translate the theory of translanguaging into daily pedagogical practices. \nIn this edWebinar\, Drs. Espinosa and Ascenzi-Moreno introduce ways that teachers can deeply know and build on their emergent bilinguals’ and their families’ sociocultural and linguistic resources\, along with designing a pedagogy that engages children in literacy practices that normalize bilingualism/multilingualism. They trace how diverse children’s literature can serve as a powerful tool to decolonize the curriculum and de-center monolingualism\, as they address how these engagements can connect to students’ intersectional identities and broaden their critical perspectives. \nDrs. Espinosa and Ascenzi-Moreno present rich and thoughtful literacy practices that propel emergent bilinguals to reading and writing success by honoring the resources that they bring to school and rooting instruction in their strengths. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders of the kindergarten through elementary levels. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nCecilia M. Espinosa\, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Childhood Education at Lehman College’s CUNY (Bronx) School of Education. Dr. Espinosa’s journey started as a teacher assistant in a preschool. She was also a bilingual multiage teacher and director of a dual language program in Phoenix\, Arizona. She currently works with bilingual teachers at the early childhood and childhood levels and teaches courses on biliteracy. Her research focus is on bilingual children’s writing and children’s literature that affirms and nurtures children’s multiple identities. \n \n \nLaura Ascenzi-Moreno\, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Childhood\, Bilingual\, and Special Education Department at Brooklyn College’s School of Education. She has more than a decade of experience in the classroom\, as a bilingual teacher\, literacy coach\, and new-teacher mentor in New York City Public Schools. Currently\, she works with practicing and preservice teachers. Her research focus is on the literacy development and assessment of emergent bilinguals\, the development of teacher knowledge\, and how they intersect with equity. \n \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Helping ELL/ESL Students Succeed community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nAt Scholastic Education\, we believe that the development of robust literacy skills is at the very heart of empowering children to thrive in school and in life. SUMMARY:Talk of the Teachers’ Lounge: Exploring Challenging Behaviors and Implicit Bias
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Angela Searcy\, Author\, Educational Consultant\, and Adjunct Faculty\, Erikson Institute\nModerated by Raven Griffin\, Marketing Manager\, Kaplan Early Learning Company \nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning Company \nWatch the Recording\n Closed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nWhat do you think of when you imagine a teachers’ lounge? These spaces of camaraderie\, collaboration\, and connectedness hold value to educators but they can also hold bias. Teachers are human\, too\, and we all hold biases whether we recognize them or not. This implicit bias isn’t inherently negative\, in fact\, it’s simply a human adaptation that simplifies information and helps your brain make quick associations and decisions. However\, when left unchallenged\, implicit bias has the potential to evolve into prejudice and explicit bias in the classroom\, potentially harming the children in your care. Examining your implicit bias isn’t easy\, but the benefits are well worth the discomfort\, as educators will learn to analyze and filter their own internal monologues and respond with neutrality when the possibility of bias arises. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Angela Searcy challenges educators to stop\, reflect on their own implicit biases\, and grow so they can better understand and serve children exhibiting challenging behaviors within their classroom. This recorded edWebinar will equip early childhood educators with the self-reflective tools needed to analyze conversations that are often heard in the teachers’ lounge by: \n\nExamining the origins of implicit bias in the brain\nAllowing attendees to reflect on everyday conversations and recognize potentially biased statements\nEncouraging attendees to utilize strategies that will help them ask filtering questions\, consider opposing ideas\, and respond with neutrality\n\nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders of the preK through elementary levels. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Angela Searcy is an educational consultant and seminar leader at Erikson Institute and the owner and founder of Simple Solutions Educational Services\, a professional development company. Accessibility has long been an essential principle for delivering equitable educational opportunities for all students\, especially those with disabilities or learning differences\, English language learners\, and students from lower socio-economic communities. Beyond guaranteeing that all students can access course content and tools\, schools and school systems also need to ensure that all information provided to the public\, parents\, guardians\, and staff is accessible from any device. In addition to meeting the legal requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)\, school systems need to make accessibility policies and practices a priority for everyone. It falls to school leaders to continually make that commitment vocal and visible. \nIn this edWebinar\, superintendents share how they are leading the complex issues involved in ensuring accessibility for all within their school districts. Five compelling steps for ensuring accessibility will be articulated and illustrated through shared resources and real-world examples of successful strategies that have been used to assure accessibility for all. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of particular value to school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders.  \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Nick Polyak serves as the superintendent for Leyden High School District 212 in Franklin Park\, Illinois. Please watch Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell as he speaks about structural racism and its lasting impact on the Kansas City community. As the child of a working-class family in upstate New York\, he overcame significant challenges and was inspired to take his education seriously by teachers and other caring adults who pushed him to achieve his dreams. \nHis educational experience and leadership made Dr. Bedell a natural choice for the superintendent’s post at KCPS in 2016. With guidance from students\, parents\, staff and partners\, Dr. Bedell crafted and enacted first a post-entry plan and later a five-year strategic plan which placed student achievement at the center of the school system’s work\, made the central office more effective and efficient\, improved School Board governance\, and increased staff skills and morale. Dr. Bedell was a featured guest on the June 23\, 2020\, episode of PBS NewsHour\, when he spoke about how distance learning was increasing inequity. He has been a regular panelist for Discovery Education’s virtual “Equity Talks.” State education officials also recruited Dr. Bedell to be part of the Commissioner’s Roundtable. \nFor Dr. Bedell\, one of his most important honors came in the spring of 2018 when students from Southeast High School gave him an award of appreciation for his efforts on their behalf and for the positive impact he will have on future students. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nDr. Valerie Truesdale joined AASA early in 2019 as the assistant executive director responsible for guiding leadership development services and programs. SUMMARY:Math Processes for All Young Learners: Setting the Stage for Long-Term Success in Numbers and Operations – Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, Director of Professional Learning\, ORIGO Education \nSponsored by ORIGO Education \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nWe often think of mathematics skills as beginning with counting. While this is one of the early skills we assess\, there are other mathematical reasoning processes that are foundational to school mathematics. Research tells us that early mathematics skills are a better predictor of adult socioeconomic status (SES) than are childhood SES or reading achievement. Developing these foundational beginning processes is critical to establishing this firm foundation. In addition\, students who struggle may have gaps in these beginning processes which impact many domains of mathematics. Supporting these learners to shore up these foundations is equally essential. \nIn part one of this two-part series\, Dr. Sara Delano Moore shares an overview of the five beginning processes as well as a deeper look at how they impact student understanding of numbers and operations. How does understanding attributes support developing understanding of numbers? What are the roles of comparing and ordering in this progression? We share activities for young learners to establish the foundation as well as resources that could support intervention in these areas for school-age learners. Watch Sara to learn more about these essential beginning processes for mathematics and how they can support your students. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to teachers\, school leaders\, and math leaders and coaches of the preK through elementary levels.  \nMath Processes for All Young Learners: Setting the Stage for Long-Term Success in Geometry and Measurement – Part 2 \n \nAbout the Presenter \nSara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. serves as Director of Professional Learning and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education.
