SUMMARY:Six Elements of Success: A K-12 Leaders’ Guide to Successful Technology Integration
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Nicole Adell\, Principal\, Newburg Middle School (KY); Dr. Darin Brawley\, Superintendent\, Compton Unified School District (CA); Patricia Alvarado\, Director of Digital Learning and Learning Resources\, Irving Independent School District (TX); and James Allrich\, Principal\, Argyle Middle School (MD)\nModerated by Lydia Logan\, Executive Director\, Verizon Innovative Learning Schools\, Digital Promise \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks. \nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThe COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the inequitable access to technology and broadband required for continuity of education through distance learning\, particularly for students who have traditionally been marginalized. Unprecedented federal funding through the CARES Act and the American Rescue Plan provides an opportunity to make significant strides toward closing the digital learning gap\, but only if we think differently about how schools leverage technology to meet the needs of every learner. Access to technology and broadband alone will not improve teaching and learning. \nDigital Promise’s new K-12 Leaders’ Guide to Successful Technology Integration shares best practices from several of the organization’s initiatives\, including seven years of implementing the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) program. They have found that the most successful schools have six elements in place to establish and sustain a culture of powerful learning that leverages technology. \nIn this edWebinar\, you will hear from a superintendent and principal whose district and school helped inform this new resource. You will leave with strategies for achieving these six elements in your districts. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, and instructional technology coaches.  \n \nAbout the Presenters \nNicole W. Adell is the principal at Newburg Middle School in Louisville\, Kentucky\, a position she has held for nine years. Newburg joined the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program in 2018. Dr. Brawley received his doctorate in educational leadership at the University of Southern California. He has a Master of Arts in educational leadership from California State University\, San Bernardino\, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Red \n \nPatricia Alvarado is the Director of Digital Learning and Learning Resources in Irving Independent School District\, where every middle and high school is a part of the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program. Her departments support campuses in the effective integration of technology and learning resources for transformative teaching and learning. Alvarado oversees the longstanding partnership between Irving ISD and Verizon Innovative Learning Schools\, and recently her department led the district’s learning management system integration to equip all Irving students and teachers with remote learning access. Before beginning her role in Irving in 2014\, Ms. Alvarado oversaw all aspects of library services in Dallas ISD as the Library Services Coordinator. She has also been a middle school media specialist\, librarian\, and bilingual teacher. Ms. Alvarado earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and a master’s degree in library and information science from Texas Woman’s University. \n \nJames Allrich has been the principal at Argyle Magnet Middle School\, the only whole-school technology magnet middle school in Montgomery County Public Schools (MD)\, for five years. Argyle joined the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program in 2019. James began his career as an educator in New Jersey\, teaching high school math. SUMMARY:Finding the Audacity of Equality in the Stories of Immigrants and Refugees
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Don Vu\, Educator\, Author\, and Principal \nSponsored by Scholastic Education \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more. \nWhen you possess the audacity of equality—the idea that you have equal rights and the same protections as any American citizen—you expect more no matter where you were born. You don’t tolerate being mistreated and you don’t put your head down and ignore injustice against yourself or others. Unfortunately\, for many immigrants and refugees\, the audacity of equality has not yet been realized. In this edWebinar\, award-winning principal and literacy advocate Dr. Don Vu examines these questions: \n\nHow can educators help instill the audacity of equality in all students?\nHow do we help them develop a sense of pride for who they are and help them understand their importance in America?\nHow do we empower them so that when they do face injustice and discrimination\, they will know to stand up and fight it?\n\nAs is often the case\, the power of literacy can play a critical role in helping these students. With skyrocketing hate crimes against Asian Americans and other immigrant groups\, this is a timely conversation and one that will impact our work in schools and communities. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders of the kindergarten through elementary levels. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Don Vu has been an elementary school teacher and principal for 24 years. Dr. Vu and his former school staff chartered a literacy campaign in 2013 to foster the love of reading in all students. In 2017\, he received the Celebrate Literacy Award from the California Reading Association for his outstanding leadership in literacy. In 2018\, his school was one of five schools nationally to receive the Exemplary Reading Program Award from the International Literacy Association (ILA). In 2020\, the school received the California Distinguished School Award for its work in closing the opportunity gap for all kids. \nDr. Vu understands the challenges children face when learning a new language and culture\, having fled Vietnam with his family in 1975. He also knows that reading can be transformative and life changing. From transformative\, research-based literacy instruction\, to expert professional development\, and groundbreaking family & community engagement\, we partner with educators every step of the way on the path to literacy.
