This is a subtle but significant distinction. Our class periods and reading blocks are often filled with students reading passages\, discussing texts\, and answering questions. And as important as these experiences are\, none of them count as explicit teaching. \nIn this recorded edWebinar\, viewers will learn what explicit\, whole-class comprehension instruction really looks like and how to effectively scaffold mini lessons within the rest of the reading block to honor the gradual release of responsibility. \nLearning objectives include: \n\nAcknowledge the purpose that various reading experiences serve within the reading block/ELA class period\nClarify teaching skills and modeling thinking versus simply assigning reading and asking questions\nIdentify the specific and explicit information that must be revealed in every K-12 comprehension lesson\n\nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nKristina Smekens has built a reputation for using enthusiasm\, humor\, and common sense to equip K-12 educators with practical\, demystifying strategies for teaching reading and writing. As President and Lead Consultant for Smekens Education\, she is a leader in developing new strategies to help teachers meet the demands of today’s College- and Career-Ready Standards. These challenges can impact functional living skills and educational experience by limiting the ability to learn new skills\, participating in groups\, and completing daily routines independently. When students have difficulty understanding language and expressing themselves\, they may demonstrate unexpected behaviors to communicate their frustration and their needs. Caregivers and teaching staff can learn strategies that enable students to use supports to understand language\, as well as use skills to communicate in daily routines. Once students learn the power of understanding language and communication\, they will be more likely to use these skills independently. \nIn this recorded edWebinar\, explore the underlying causes of communication differences in students with autism and other developmental delays. Considering the impact language deficits have on student behaviors\, the presenters share and delve into a variety of free resources that can be used in the home or school setting to increase desired behaviors. Video examples and practical tips will be shared so that participants leave with various ideas to teach students the power of language in daily routines. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and caregivers of students with autism. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nAimee Dearmon is a speech and language pathologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who has over 15 years of experience serving students with autism and other developmental delays in public\, private and home settings.
