SUMMARY:Returning to Rigorous Mathematics\, Part 1: Using Spaced Practice to Accelerate Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, Vice President for Content and Research\, ORIGO Education \nSponsored by ORIGO Education \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nAs students return to a hopefully more typical school year\, learning is likely to be anything but typical. Student and teacher experiences over the past 18 months have varied greatly and classrooms are filled with students representing a wider range of learning needs than ever before. The challenge for teachers is to help each student move their mathematics learning forward. While it will take time for most students to return to typical “on-grade-level” expectations\, we must support students to move forward rather than picking up instruction where “regular school” left off in March 2020. Responding to this wide range of learners is part of the job in education; the pandemic has made this part of the work more prominent in many classrooms. \nIn this first edWebinar of a two-part series\, Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. will illustrate the interconnection of two important ideas for long-term mathematics success: spaced practice and accelerated learning. Spaced practice gives the brain time to forget\, to remember\, and to consolidate learning. These steps are the foundation for long-term encoding and retrieval. Accelerated learning brings ideas from past learning forward on a “just-in-time” basis. Using the progression from basic facts to more fluent computation\, the examples that will be discussed show how to help students learn content they might not know from prior years by emphasizing the connection to current learning. Join Sara to explore instructional sequences and strategies for supporting every learner while emphasizing current content. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to teachers and school and district leaders at the elementary level.  \nReturning to Rigorous Mathematics\, Part 2: Strengthening Student Thinking with the Practice and Process Standards \n \nAbout the Presenter \nSara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. serves as Vice President for Content and Research and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education. A fourth-generation educator\, Sara’s work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning mathematics. Her interests include building mathematical comprehension and operation sense\, incorporating high-quality literature into mathematics instruction\, and connecting mathematics with engineering design and computational thinking. Sara has served as a classroom teacher of mathematics and science\, a mathematics teacher educator at the University of Kentucky\, Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement\, and Director of Mathematics & Science at ETA Hand2Mind. She has authored numerous articles in professional journals and is a co-author of the Mathematize It! series of books. She is also a member of the Visible Learning for Mathematics writing team\, including two volumes of the Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom series. \n  \nJoin the Mathematics for Young Learners community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nORIGO Education is dedicated to making learning meaningful\, enjoyable and accessible for all students with Pre-K to Grade 6 print and digital instructional materials\, as well as professional learning for mathematics.

SUMMARY:Open Doors\, Open Minds: Leveraging Student Experience to Accelerate Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Nikki La Londe\, HMH Director of Professional Learning\, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; Brenda Konicke\, Director of Professional Learning East Region\, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; and Danielle Winn\, Director of Professional Learning Strategic Accounts\, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt \nSponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nDuring this edWebinar\, we’ll unpack how the powerful intervention approach of identifying where math stopped making sense for our students and building upon what our students already know can accelerate their math learning. \nAs students return to learning\, the need to accelerate learning for all students will be critical. Accelerating learning is not speeding through lessons to cover everything students didn’t learn in previous grades. Rather\, it is an approach to teaching and learning that focuses on understanding where math stopped making sense for students and building upon that understanding to move students to grade-level proficiency. \nAccelerating learning for all calls for the relationships between numbers and concepts to be made visible to students and learning pathways that include just-in-time scaffolding and appropriate data-driven differentiation. Research has shown time and time again that if you can get students to think critically about their own mathematical thinking\, there is an opportunity to grow. All of our students can take off—some just need a longer runway in order to accelerate their learning. \nIn this edWebinar\, viewers will: \n\nLearn what it means to prioritize learning experiences\nLearn about the role intentional intervention can play to accelerate learning for students two or more years behind grade level in math\nLearn how leaders can empower the learning community in their districts or on their campuses\n\nThis edWebinar will be of interest to teachers and school and district leaders of the middle school grades.  \n \nAbout the Presenter \nNikki La Londe\, an educator for over 15 years\, is currently the Director of Professional Learning for Math Solutions. SUMMARY:Building a Solar Oven: A Real-World\, Interdisciplinary Project for K-12 Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jennifer Gasser\, Business Development Consultant\, Solar Education Project; and Mary Buchenic\, Education Director\, Solar Education Project \nSponsored by CoderZ \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nAcademic lessons\, taught within the context of life experiences\, provide a richness and depth of understanding for students that is impactful personally\, cognitively\, and socially. To achieve this kind of impact\, Jennifer Gasser and Mary Buchenic of the Solar Education Project will propose a wonderful FREE education project — the solar oven. Solar ovens use concentrated sunlight directed at a cooking surface or into a cooking space to cook all types of foods using a variety of methods. \nBy introducing this tool to students and incorporating solar cooking into the curriculum\, students embrace and explore not only STEM but other disciplines as well—social science\, geography\, political science\, language arts\, art\, and more. Solar cookers lend themselves perfectly to lessons that are inquiry based\, project based\, and interdisciplinary. Students are motivated by the personal and real-world implications of solar cooking\, and they love the fact that\, with creativity and understanding of fundamental physical science concepts\, they can design and engineer an oven capable of cooking a meal with sunlight. \nThrough innovative\, hands-on lessons\, Solar Education Project (SEP) helps students develop skills in STEM and other disciplines as well. Global acceptance of solar cooking begins at home. Cooking for ourselves and others shows that solar cooking is fun\, safe\, and a means to make delicious foods everywhere! SEP works to share this technology wherever the sun shines—from Skyping with classrooms across the United States to on-site work in Haiti and Pakistan to programs they support in Kenya. \nView this edWebinar to learn how to incorporate a global perspective to a multitude of interdisciplinary subjects and approaches\, learn about options for bringing Jennifer and Mary\, “The Solar Sisters\,” to your campus this year\, and access a wealth of resources that let you bring solar cooking to your classroom with lesson plans\, experiments\, and more! \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school leaders of the elementary through high school levels.  \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJennifer Gasser is Co-Founder and Business Development Consultant at the Solar Education Project\, formed in 2016 under the nonprofit Global Development Solutions.
