SUMMARY:The Causes of Reading Difficulties and How to Help Students Who Have Them
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Devin Kearns\, Associate Professor\, University of Connecticut \nSponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nSerious difficulty with word recognition can have pernicious consequences for students. Many students with word recognition difficulty are identified with a specific learning disability in reading\, often dyslexia. There are at least six ways to explain the nature of a child’s reading difficulty. Dyslexia is one important cause of word recognition difficulties\, but there are others. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Devin Kearns discusses these different causes of reading difficulties and explains some confusing points and controversies related to word recognition difficulty. Then\, strategies are provided to support children with word recognition difficulties including dyslexia. These include very foundational strategies for students with very limited reading skills and more advanced strategies for students who have acquired skills for reading monosyllabic words. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDevin M. Kearns\, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Connecticut (UConn). He researches reading disabilities—including dyslexia—in school-age children. His research focuses on linking educational practice to cognitive science and neuroscience in collaboration with colleagues at Haskins Laboratories and the Brain Imaging Research Center at UConn. He and his colleagues examine the neurobiological change that occurs as students learn to read. They are also developing a new reading intervention designed to link word reading and meaning and examining how the intervention affects students’ patterns of cognitive processing. He and his colleagues are also developing and testing a game-based dyslexia screening app. Dr. Kearns has seven years of classroom experience as a teacher\, literacy coach\, and reading specialist. He continues to help schools and districts implement high-quality reading instruction—including demonstrating how to implement evidence-based reading instruction. \n \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Teaching Reading and Writing community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nHMH® brings together on-demand professional development\, students’ assessment data\, and relevant practice and instruction\, so you can teach\, learn\, and grow\, in class\, at home\, and anywhere in between. SUMMARY:Music and Movement Activities That Support Young Children's Social and Emotional Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz\, Director of Research\, Music Together Worldwide\, and Professor Emeritus\, Rowan University\nModerated by Lisa Chouteau\, Senior Video Producer and Manager of Video Production\, Music Together Worldwide \nSponsored by Music Together \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nHealthy social-emotional development in early childhood can have a profound impact on a child’s overall development and learning. In fact\, many early childhood experts see positive social and emotional skills as paramount for school readiness and later school and life success. With the interruption of the school year and less socialization opportunities\, there is valid concern among researchers\, educators\, and parents that the COVID-19 pandemic has had—and will continue to have—a negative impact on young children’s social and emotional development. \nMusic education curriculum components not only support music development but are naturally supportive tools for social and emotional learning in early childhood. Developmentally appropriate\, participatory\, group\, and dyad music and movement activities have special characteristics that can support young children as they develop socially and emotionally\, and also support social competence and reduce stress. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz reviews the important dimensions of social and emotional development and share some early research on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on young children’s social and emotional learning. She then demonstrates fun and accessible music activities that support a range of social and emotional skills\, such as cooperation\, prosocial skills\, and self-regulation\, which all contribute to social competence and positive group process in the preschool classroom. Attendees also gain strategies for extending the music making—and therefore the developmental benefits—to the home. \nAttendees leave this edWebinar with a deeper understanding of the ways in which active music making can naturally support children’s social and emotional learning during the preschool years\, as well as having experienced some new songs and music activities they can use right away in their work with children. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to preK-3 teachers.  \n \nAbout the Presenter \nLili M. Levinowitz\, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Music Education at Rowan University. Her articles appear frequently in professional journals and popular magazines. She earned her M.M. and Ph.D. from Temple University and her B.M. from Westminster Choir College. \n \nAbout the Host \nLisa Chouteau is the Music in Early Learning edWebinar series host. The rapid acceleration of the use of technology during the pandemic brought many new technology opportunities to K-12 education. However\, along with progress came serious challenges. One of the most alarming trends has been the rise in cyberattacks on school district networks. The result is not only disruptions in teaching and learning and school operations\, but also damaging exposure of school personnel data and student data. \nToday\, more than ever\, school district leaders must know how to take appropriate actions to be sufficiently aggressive in getting ahead of cybersecurity threats and also know how to respond when their school network systems are impacted by a cyberattack. \nIn this recorded edWebinar\, three school district superintendents share their knowledge and experiences in leading cybersecurity awareness in their school systems. Strategies for preventing cyberattacks and recommendations for responding effectively when they do occur are reviewed. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of particular value to superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring school leaders. \n  \nAbout the Presenters \nMatthew Miller is Superintendent of Lakota Local Schools.
