SUMMARY:Remote and Hybrid Learning: How Online Instruction Can Make a Difference in the Long Haul
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Tim Sun\, Math and Physics Teacher\, Northern Academy of the Arts (NY); Jovariya Ahsan\, Data and Systems Manager\, The Tutor Trust; and Ian Carlson\, Math and Chess Instructor\, MathAltitude School of Mathematics (MA) \nSponsored by VEDAMO \nThe session recording is no longer available. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nHow will teachers and tutors use remote and hybrid learning after the pandemic? Online learning was the best bad option when schools had to weather shutdowns over the past couple of years. Educators know that face-to-face instruction is optimal for most learners most of the time. But one of the bright spots to come out of our recent experience is a better understanding of where virtual instruction does work well. Many educators are now thinking about where these hard-won lessons can be applied in a targeted way. \nThis edWebinar provides educators with ideas and strategies from front-line practitioners on how online learning is making a difference in very different environments. This shift is a global phenomenon\, so our two United States-based educators are joined by an expert from the United Kingdom. \nThe session covers how three different organizations are using online learning\, and a lively discussion fueled by audience questions dives deeper into the topic. Viewers have a broader perspective on where online approaches can improve student outcomes. They are also provided with a white paper that reviews the funding sources for online learning recovery under ESSER\, ESSA\, and state initiatives. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, tutors\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nTim Sun is a math and physics teacher at Northern Academy of the Arts in Middletown\, New York. Too many students\, especially in K-2\, will not achieve grade-level goals this school year unless they make rapid gains over the spring and summer months. \nThis edWebinar explores how schools and districts can utilize reading science and cognitive science to help their K-2 students make rapid and lasting literacy gains by focusing on decoding\, encoding\, and other critical phonemic awareness and phonics skills. This session challenges the status quo by overturning many false assumptions about how kids learn to read. \nWe accomplish this end by putting educators in their students’ shoes and making them feel what it’s like to learn to read for the first time (let’s be honest\, we all forgot how we learned to read!). This unique educational experience paves the way for a new\, science-backed approach to literacy\, replete with practical classroom applications\, focusing on equity. Viewers gain free access to practical tools to help their students make rapid and far-reaching gains this school year. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to school leaders\, district leaders\, and curriculum directors of the K-2 grades. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nEyal Rav-Noy spent 25 years teaching various subjects to adults of all ages in his adult education center. His most fulfilling and popular course was teaching adult students to read. Over time\, Eyal and his wife\, Tzippy\, developed a unique approach to literacy instruction. After poring over the research on language development and reading science\, Eyal and Tzippy created a new phonics solution\, CAPIT Reading. Eyal lives in Los Angeles with his wife\, five children\, and their dog\, Luna\, and enjoys running all over Los Angeles as he prepares for the next marathon. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nJeanette Russell has a 30-year career in education.
