SUMMARY:Learning America: How We Can Welcome and Provide a Just and Robust Education for Refugee and Immigrant Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Luma Mufleh\, Founder and CEO\, Fugees Family; Emily Futransky\, Chief Impact Officer\, Fugees Family; and Gary Fields\, Superintendent\, Bowling Green Independent School District (KY)\nModerated by Barbara Pape\, Senior Director\, Learner Variability Project\, Digital Promise \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nMillions of refugees fleeing war in Ukraine and Afghanistan in recent months have captured attention and concern in the United States. Hundreds of thousands will resettle here\, but the U.S. education system is largely failing refugee and immigrant students. Over five million English language learners (ELLs) are enrolled in schools nationwide\, yet among them\, only 14% achieve English language proficiency. Nationally\, the dropout rate of ELLs is 40%\, and these students are five times more likely to be out of school than their peers. \nHow can we design schools and classrooms to not only welcome our new students\, but also provide environments where robust learning can occur? The nonprofit Fugees Family has reimagined schools for refugees and immigrants who are learning English\, offering specialized education and centering on soccer as a way to\, among other things\, create a sense of belonging. Fugees Academies in Georgia and Ohio now serve as innovation hubs for school districts nationwide seeking support for their newcomer and ELL programs. \nIn this edWebinar\, viewers: \n\nLearn more about the Fugees model and hear personal stories and inspiration behind the Fugees Academies\nDive into specific examples of how Fugees is partnering with districts to build and transform schools for refugee and immigrant students\nExplore the relevance of whole-child teaching and learning and learner variability within schools embracing refugee and immigrant students\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders of all grade levels.  \n  \nAbout the Presenters \nLuma Mufleh is a Syrian/Jordanian entrepreneur\, coach\, and thought leader in refugee and English Language Learner education. To truly make a difference for students\, educators need to focus on what the evidence says\, and the evidence points to literacy. \nLiteracy is at the heart of educational equity\, and today\, too many students are still not able to read proficiently. Educators need better support\, resources\, and tools to teach reading in a way that helps ALL students learn. Students and their learning needs are diverse\, but we have the research on how to reach each and every one of them. That research is the Science of Reading\, which is brought into the classroom through Structured Literacy and differentiated instruction. \nWatch this edWebinar with educational experts Dr. Carrie Doom and Michele Pulver to learn what literacy instruction needs to be equitable\, and how to implement those proven\, equitable instructional practices in our classrooms and schools today. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers and school and district leaders of the K-8 grades. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Carrie Doom has a passion for education and meeting the needs of struggling learners in literacy\, math\, and behavior. SUMMARY:Practicing Resilience with Trauma-Informed Practices for Adults and Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Harrison Orpe\, Canadian Paralympic Hopeful in Track and Field; Laurie Nociar\, Grade 7 Teacher\, Bear Creek Elementary School (B.C.\, Canada); and Janet Ilko\, Ed.D.\, Instructional Coach and Administrator\, Howard Gardner Community School (CA)\nModerated by Anjoli Santiago\, Manager of Awesomeness\, Classroom Champions \nHosted by Classroom Champions\nSponsored by ClassLink \nWatch the Recording Listen to the PodcastRead the Article \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nToday’s educational landscape is fraught with challenges related to teacher attribution\, learning loss\, mental health\, and safety\, never mind the day-to-day instructional practices\, and yet our educators continue to rise and meet these issues with their can-do attitudes. However\, we need to support teachers as they expand their toolbox of strategies to include tactics to address the more extreme issues that are arising for kids both in and out of school. By strengthening such communication and connections\, schools can continue to build a safe environment and positive culture so that the whole school community can thrive. \nIn this edLeader Panel\, teachers are equipped with research-based practices to build a resilient school culture. They grasp how to create a strengths-based framework to better understand\, recognize\, and respond to the effect of trauma schoolwide. Panelists Paralympian Harrison Orpe and seventh-grade teacher Laurie Nociar dive deep into practices from their respective fieldwork in therapy and schools\, sharing strategies and practices applicable to both adults and students. Come join us to learn more about how trauma-informed care and practices can help shift culture\, promote self-care and wellness\, and address whole-child education\, leading to improved academic and behavioral outcomes. \nThis recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to K-12 and higher education teachers\, librarians\, counselors\, and school and district leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nHarrison Orpe has been involved in sports from a very early age playing baseball\, sledge hockey\, and wheelchair rugby. Prior to starting wheelchair rugby\, Harrison began strength training and gained considerable strength and muscle over a period of five years. While playing wheelchair rugby\, Harrison discovered para athletics and thought it would suit him well considering his strength and power. \nIn his first international competition\, he won gold in both javelin and shot put. He currently holds the Canadian record in seated javelin at 14.03m and is just centimeters away from the Canadian record in seated shot put as well. Harrison hopes to represent Canada again in future competitions. His ultimate goal is to compete in the 2024 Paralympics in Paris\, France. \n \nLaurie Nociar\, a seventh-grade teacher\, is in her eighth year with Classroom Champions and is based in Bear Creek Elementary in Surrey\, B.C.\, Canada. She loves the sense of community created among students and teachers created by Classroom Champions and finds the organization to be an effective support system. When asked about the impact of Classroom Champions\, Laurie shares that “our Classroom Champions mentor offers advice and support beyond what students get from parents and teachers. Having a world-class athlete taking the time to build that solid relationship does wonders for a student’s confidence and self-esteem.” \n \nDr. Janet Ilko’s role as an educational leader is to create and support learning environments that challenge every student to be their best and to make sure that every student has access to high-quality content and instruction. What she has learned in all her educational research is that there are no clear-cut answers to meeting the needs of diverse learners in the classroom—no cookie-cutter program will educate our youth. What she still knows to be true\, however\, is that when you build a safe community\, and student voice and interest is addressed and honored\, students learn. More importantly\, they value the learning. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nAnjoli Santiago comes with years of experience in the education world starting as a performing teaching artist in Philadelphia\, a full-time teacher in the South Bronx\, a program manager\, and so much more. Proud to be a part of the Classroom Champions team\, Anjoli supports rockstar teachers and excellent social and emotional programming across the nation. SUMMARY:How to Stop the "I'm Just a Teacher" Mantra That Fuels Burnout
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Terrie Noland\, Ph.D.\, CALP\, Vice President\, Educator Initiatives\, Learning Ally\nModerated by Elizabeth Zwerg\, Community Manager\, Learning Ally \nSponsored by Learning Ally \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \n“Have you said these words? It’s confession time: I’ve said it many times myself\, ‘I’m just a teacher.’ Unfortunately\, it took me over 20 years to realize my worth not only in the classroom but also as an administrator. I wish I had understood my value despite what society said\, despite the culture I was in\, and despite how I felt about my role as an educator and administrator at the time.” – Terrie Noland \nIn this edWebinar\, Terrie addresses two distinct issues regarding the “I’m just a teacher” mantra perpetuated in the hearts and minds of so many educators. \n\nClassroom teachers walk away knowing their worth\, being equipped to embody a lead-large philosophy\, and knowing how to replace the word “just” with “justified.”\nAdministrators are resourced to cast the vision of a school or district that claims authority over negative self-talk and drives power and purpose in each staff and faculty role that will help to prevent burnout.\n\nIt’s high time to place value where value belongs and dismantle the self-deprecating perception of one of the world’s most influential and epic professions — education! This recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders of all grade levels. \nAbout the Presenter \nListen. Learn. Teach. It’s that simple. Terrie Noland uses this philosophy as an innovator and a motivator\, and it’s evident as she leads\, coaches and mentors thousands of K-12 educators about the science of reading each year. She has a unique perspective on the need to unify all stakeholders around a vision for education to smash the reading divide for the millions of struggling readers. Her daily mission is to add value to educators to help influence transformational changes in school districts across the country by addressing the needs of marginalized students. Terrie seeks to share her expertise and passion to encourage and to illuminate a path towards success and measurable outcomes. \nIf you looked at Terrie’s resume\, you would be confused. Her undergraduate and graduate degree work placed her in the field of criminal justice. However\, it was through continuous listening and learning that led her on a journey in education starting out in preschool teaching and administration\, then becoming a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) and earning a Ph.D. in literacy and educational leadership from St. John’s University. Terrie is also a John Maxwell certified speaker and coach. \nAs Vice President of Educator Initiatives at Learning Ally\, Terrie works to ignite enthusiasm and excitement by building champion educators and administrators on creating cultures of literacy and learning. \n  \nAbout the Moderator \nElizabeth Zwerg serves as Learning Ally’s Community Manager\, empowering educators in their journey toward literacy leadership. Elizabeth taught elementary school for seven years in urban\, Title 1 schools and is passionate about solving the equity gap in education. She believes strong educator relationships are central to a child’s learning\, and addressing the needs of the whole child is the framework in which authentic learning occurs. Elizabeth loves serving and connecting with educators because she knows “no authentic learning occurs without an authentic relationship.” \nElizabeth holds a BA in political science\, an MA in conflict resolution\, and co-built a large online community dedicated to empowering women to travel solo\, and served that group for many years as the volunteer community manager. \nWhen not geeking out with other educator friends about instructional practices\, you can find Elizabeth exploring another corner of this vast\, beautiful world. Having traveled to over 34 countries\, she is passionate about diving deep into other cultures\, wandering around markets in foreign lands\, and photographing the big night skies in Texas where she lives with her husband\, Michael\, and German Shepherd\, Sienna. Elizabeth enthusiastically grabs onto opportunities to connect with others and nature. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Empowering Struggling Readers community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nLearning Ally is a leading education solutions organization committed to transforming the lives of struggling learners. Online learning was the best bad option when schools had to weather shutdowns over the past couple of years. Educators know that face-to-face instruction is optimal for most learners most of the time. But one of the bright spots to come out of our recent experience is a better understanding of where virtual instruction does work well. Many educators are now thinking about where these hard-won lessons can be applied in a targeted way. \nThis edWebinar provides educators with ideas and strategies from front-line practitioners on how online learning is making a difference in very different environments. This shift is a global phenomenon\, so our two United States-based educators are joined by an expert from the United Kingdom. \nThe session covers how three different organizations are using online learning\, and a lively discussion fueled by audience questions dives deeper into the topic. Viewers have a broader perspective on where online approaches can improve student outcomes. They are also provided with a white paper that reviews the funding sources for online learning recovery under ESSER\, ESSA\, and state initiatives. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, tutors\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nTim Sun is a math and physics teacher at Northern Academy of the Arts in Middletown\, New York.
