SUMMARY:What Role Do the 5 Pillars of Reading Play in Today’s Classroom?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cheryl Lundy Swift\, M.Ed.\, Professional Learning Director\, Learning Without Tears; and Katherine A. Dougherty Stahl\, Ed.D.\, Consultant and Author \nSponsored by Learning Without Tears \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIn the years following the report of the National Reading Panel (2000)\, many schools were mandated to provide research-based instruction in the five pillars of reading: phonological awareness\, phonics\, fluency\, vocabulary\, and comprehension. \nIn this edWebinar\, we briefly address how theoretical shifts of the last 20 years have caused instructional shifts in primary classrooms. As teachers\, we often feel like we have to do it ALL. We discuss how to treat reading development holistically\, with key elements consistently emphasized (e.g.\, vocabulary/language development\, comprehension)\, while our time with other processes (e.g.\, phonological awareness\, phonics\, fluency) takes on greater or lesser importance depending on student needs (Kuhn & Stahl). Specific tools and techniques are identified within each developmental stage (e.g.\, reading material\, instructional protocols). \nAt the end of this session\, you can: \n\nIdentify the ways that theoretical pendulum swings influence classroom literacy instruction\, often detrimentally\nIdentify the basic characteristics of readers in the emergent\, novice\, and transitional stages\nRecognize the traits and examples of developmentally appropriate phonological awareness\, phonics\, fluency\, vocabulary\, and comprehension instruction for emergent\, novice\, and transitional readers\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers\, education technology leaders\, and occupational therapists of the kindergarten through elementary levels. \n\n \nAbout the Presenters \nCheryl Lundy Swift received a Master of Education in administration and supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University and has been a dedicated educator for over 20 years. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Luma Mufleh\, Founder and CEO\, Fugees Family; Emily Futransky\, Chief Impact Officer\, Fugees Family; and Gary Fields\, Superintendent\, Bowling Green Independent School District (KY)\nModerated by Barbara Pape\, Senior Director\, Learner Variability Project\, Digital Promise \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nMillions of refugees fleeing war in Ukraine and Afghanistan in recent months have captured attention and concern in the United States. The nonprofit Fugees Family has reimagined schools for refugees and immigrants who are learning English\, offering specialized education and centering on soccer as a way to\, among other things\, create a sense of belonging. Fugees Academies in Georgia and Ohio now serve as innovation hubs for school districts nationwide seeking support for their newcomer and ELL programs. \nIn this edWebinar\, viewers: \n\nLearn more about the Fugees model and hear personal stories and inspiration behind the Fugees Academies\nDive into specific examples of how Fugees is partnering with districts to build and transform schools for refugee and immigrant students\nExplore the relevance of whole-child teaching and learning and learner variability within schools embracing refugee and immigrant students\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders of all grade levels.  \n  \nAbout the Presenters \nLuma Mufleh is a Syrian/Jordanian entrepreneur\, coach\, and thought leader in refugee and English Language Learner education. To truly make a difference for students\, educators need to focus on what the evidence says\, and the evidence points to literacy. \nLiteracy is at the heart of educational equity\, and today\, too many students are still not able to read proficiently. Educators need better support\, resources\, and tools to teach reading in a way that helps ALL students learn. Students and their learning needs are diverse\, but we have the research on how to reach each and every one of them. That research is the Science of Reading\, which is brought into the classroom through Structured Literacy and differentiated instruction. \nWatch this edWebinar with educational experts Dr. Carrie Doom and Michele Pulver to learn what literacy instruction needs to be equitable\, and how to implement those proven\, equitable instructional practices in our classrooms and schools today. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers and school and district leaders of the K-8 grades. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Carrie Doom has a passion for education and meeting the needs of struggling learners in literacy\, math\, and behavior. In such an environment\, schools need more and better tools to support their students\, and school leaders are looking for ways to update their current processes to meet the challenges of the moment. \nMany schools that incorporate social-emotional learning (SEL) into their instruction do so as a foundational support for their students\, but what interventions are available for those students who need more intensive support? How can SEL be integrated into school- and district-wide MTSS frameworks to ensure all students are getting not just the academic support they need\, but adequate social and emotional attention as well? \nWatch this edWebinar\, featuring MTSS expert Lindsee Fryatt and Blue Earth Area High School Principal Conan Shaffer\, as they break down how you can integrate SEL as a Tier 2 support in your MTSS framework.
