SUMMARY:Demystifying Dyslexia: The History\, Research\, and Best Practices for Supporting All Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rachel Brown\, Ph.D.\, Senior Research Associate\, Illuminate Education\, Inc.; and John Bielinski\, Ph.D.\, Senior Director of Research and Development\, Illuminate Education\, Inc. \nSponsored by Illuminate Education \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThe term dyslexia dates to the early 20th century when the phrase “word blindness” was introduced as a way to describe a particular type of reading challenge. Over a century later\, many educators still struggle to understand not only what dyslexia is and how it can be identified\, but also how to provide effective supports for students with reading difficulties\, including dyslexia. \nIn recent years\, most U.S. states have adopted measures related to dyslexia screening so that early identification of—and intervention for—dyslexia can occur. Importantly\, recent dyslexia legislation requires all educators\, not just special education teachers\, to understand the causes and treatments for dyslexia in order to provide a comprehensive approach to support reading success for all students. During this edWebinar\, Drs. Rachel Brown and John Bielinski discuss: \n\nThe complicated history of the term “dyslexia” and its appropriate role in schools\nMyths and fears about dyslexia and how to address them with facts\nCurrent research around effective screening and what we know to be true about teaching students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties\nBest practices for screening and progress monitoring that will work within your MTSS\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, and school counselors and psychologists. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Rachel Brown began her career as a middle school social studies teacher. She quickly learned that many of her students could not read well enough to understand assigned texts. This led Dr. Brown to earn certification as a special educator. Having learned that special education was not the answer to all students’ learning challenges\, she earned her Ph.D. in school psychology and special education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2000. She was a faculty member in educational and school psychology at the University of Southern Maine for 16 years and then joined FastBridge Learning where she currently serves as a senior research associate. Dr. Brown now teaches in the Special Education Department at the University of Southern Maine. Her research focuses on effective reading instruction and assessment within a Multi-Tiered System of Support. \n \nDr. John Bielinski is a psychometrician by training and has led development of educational tests and educational research in the industry for 20 years. Dr. Bielinski began his career in education policy at the National Center on Educational Outcomes and joined FastBridge in 2018. His expertise is in CBM and modeling growth. \n \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Teaching Reading and Writing community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nIlluminate Education partners with K-12 educators to equip them with data to serve the whole child and reach new levels of student performance. Our solution brings together holistic data and collaborative tools and puts them in the hands of educators. Illuminate supports over 17 million students and 5200 districts/schools.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rachel Larimore\, Ph.D.\, Chief Visionary\, Samara Early Learning \nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning Company \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nNature-based education seems to be all the rage lately\, particularly since the start of the pandemic. The reality is there are many benefits to nature-based learning for children’s whole development—not just their physical well-being. There are also benefits to teachers! (Imagine having more joy in your workday!) However\, for many educators\, implementing a nature-based approach is easier said than done. How do we bring nature inside? How do we accomplish our curricular goals outside? What do we do about the logistics of weather\, dirt\, bathrooms\, etc.? What do we say to families who don’t understand why the children are “just playing outside”? \nThis edWebinar first explores the fundamental principles of the nature-based approach. Then\, Dr. Rachel Larimore provides five simple steps\, aligned with these principles\, to intentionally integrate the approach into teaching practice—no matter your current situation. Viewers leave the session with tangible ideas that can be implemented the next day as well as some ideas that can be worked toward in the future. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-3 teachers and school and district leaders\, as well as early childhood researchers and scholars. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Rachel A. SUMMARY:Decoding Is Only Half the Story: Challenges with Implementing the Science of Reading
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Suzanne Carreker\, Principal Educational Content Lead\, Lexia Learning \nSponsored by Lexia Learning \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nTo accelerate literacy learning\, the Science of Reading is being embraced in states\, districts\, and schools across the nation. But as it turns out\, actually implementing it in the classroom is no picnic. Part of this struggle is combatting the longstanding myth that the Science of Reading means phonics. While explicit phonics instruction is supported by the Science of Reading\, it’s only one part of the equation. \nTeaching students to read is complex. Some students seem to pick it up intuitively\, while others struggle\, and it can be difficult to identify why. The Science of Reading can help every student learn to read\, but it is a large body of evidence that can be difficult to understand without proper guidance. It isn’t a one-stop approach to reading instruction\, and without effective professional learning\, implementation will continue to be a struggle. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Suzanne Carreker explores how educators can overcome these challenges to accelerate literacy learning for every student. Dr. Carreker discusses: \n\nThe current state of literacy acceleration\nThe Science of Reading—it’s not just phonics\nWhy it is so hard to implement the Science of Reading\nHow to get teachers the knowledge they need\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Suzanne Carreker is Lexia’s Principal Educational Content Lead. She is the recipient of the 2018 International Dyslexia Association Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award and the HBIDA Nancy LaFevers Community Service Award for her contributions to students with dyslexia and other related learning differences. Dr. Carreker’s steadfast determination to ensure all children become successful readers and confident learners continues to be the driving force behind all of her work. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Teaching Reading and Writing community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nLexia® Learning\, a Cambium® company\, is one of the most impactful and highly respected reading-technology companies in the world. SUMMARY:Safety in Middle and High School Science Labs
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Mike Marvel\, Senior Scientist\, Flinn Scientific \nSponsored by Flinn Scientific \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nDeveloping and maintaining a safe learning environment in the school laboratory is critically important and this responsibility falls primarily to the teachers. Too often\, teachers lack knowledge or understanding of current safety guidelines and protocols due to a variety of reasons\, including that safety may not have been an integral part of their university science curricula\, methods courses\, or research science. \nSurveys by the National Science Teaching Association and others indicate that although a large majority of university and college science faculty indicate safety is a priority\, most also self-report that they rarely perform risk or hazard assessments prior to conducting experiments. It is no surprise that most high school science teachers enter the profession lacking sufficient training in building and sustaining a proactive lab safety program. Moreover\, these teachers commonly perceive the risk levels in their labs to be low despite reporting that lab accidents and injuries are common. \nThis edWebinar covers how to build a strong safety culture in your classroom\, laboratory\, school\, or district so that you can uphold your duty of care to students and create a safe and effective learning environment.
