SUMMARY:Secondary Newcomers: Equitable Pathways for Diverse EL Profiles
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lindsey Bird\, Education Coach and Consultant\, Lindsey Bird Consulting and Teach Plus California \nSponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIn general terms\, the K-12 school system is designed to teach students how to read kindergarten through third grade\, and then shifts to students relying on reading to learn fourth grade and beyond. Students reading below grade level in the upper grades of elementary have statistically faced an uphill challenge when compared to peers reading at grade level. Yet the demographic that too often gets left out of this conversation about the “remediation” of grade-level competency is a group of students who were not even physically present in U.S. schools during those vital foundational years of primary education—newcomers. \nNewcomers who enter the U.S. school system after the primary grades arrive in classes with curricula and standards assuming some degree of English proficiency. Yet for many\, not only is English a new language\, but so is the Roman alphabet. And for many\, gaps in their formal education mean language is only one of the hurdles these motivated new Americans face. \nWatch this edWebinar to learn how to best address newcomers entering U.S. schools post-primary education\, starting first with our mindsets. Viewing these students for the assets they bring\, rather than the deficits they might be perceived to have when compared to their native-born peers\, is vital. Then\, hear about the importance of exploring the diversity within the various EL profiles newcomers bring into our classrooms and designing equitable pathways that accelerate (not remediate) students toward English proficiency and grade-level content mastery. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, especially multilingual teachers\, and school and district leaders. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nLindsey Bird recently left a 17-year teaching career\, the past decade of which was spent as the developer\, instructor\, and coordinator of the Language Institute\, a specialized program serving immigrant\, refugee\, and asylum-seeking high school students in Modesto\, California\, which was nationally recognized as a model for supporting the needs of newcomer students. \nLindsey is a social justice champion and ally to immigrant students and families at the local\, state\, and national levels. An alumna of the Teach Plus California Fellowship\, Lindsey advocated the state legislature for tenure reform\, as well as successfully inserting explicit protections for newcomer students in the education code. She received the Maestra del Ano award from the Association of Mexican American Educators and the Amiga of the Year award from El Concilio\, and was honored as a Carlston Family Foundation Outstanding Teacher of America. Lindsey earned a BA in social science from California State University Chico and an M.Ed. in literacy and digital learning from the University of San Diego. SUMMARY:Pre-K Reading Foundations: Using “Letter-a-Day” Research to Raise Student Achievement
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Ray Reutzel\, Senior Research Fellow in the Center for the School of the Future at Utah State University\, Award-winning Early Literacy Researcher\, and Elected Member and Past President of the International Reading Hall of Fame; and Sara Rich\, Former Award-Winning Principal\, Current CEO\, Just Right Reader\nModerated by Christy Lamb\, Elementary School Principal and Co-Founder\, The Modern Principal \nSponsored by Just Right Reader \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nWhat does the Science of Reading tell us about laying the foundations for reading and writing in Pre-K students? How can we\, as educators and school administrators\, translate the research into instruction that unlocks reading foundations for young students and sets them up for reading and writing success throughout their school years? \nIn this edWebinar\, we cover the latest research for foundational reading and explain how it translates to supporting and leading Pre-K classrooms. Dr. Ray Reutzel\, an award-winning early literacy researcher\, walks us through research-tested best practices for alphabet knowledge and transitioning students to CVC word reading. He details the letter-a-day plan for alphabet knowledge acquisition and explains the “why” behind the recommended lesson plan. The research covered in this edWebinar reflects best practices for all Pre-K classrooms\, but is particularly important for districts and schools with high mobility brought on by high poverty or other factors. \nWe also go over what to look for in educational materials to support the research-backed lesson plans. How does the research translate to high-quality and skill-appropriate books to incorporate everything we know about how kids learn to read? \nWhether you are an administrator supporting multiple Pre-K classrooms or an educator working directly with Pre-K students\, you walk away with deeper knowledge of and tactical solutions for implementation of the latest research around increasing early literacy achievement to set students up for successful academic careers. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to Pre-K teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \n\n\nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Ray Reutzel is currently serving as Senior Research Fellow in the Center for the School of the Future at Utah State University. He has published more than 235 articles\, chapters\, and books on early literacy and early childhood education and received over $17 million in extramural funding. He is the former dean of the College of Education at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. He also held the Emma Eccles Jones Endowed Chair Distinguished Professorship at Utah State University for 14 years. His research on early literacy in Grades K–3 earned him the International Literacy Association’s highest recognition\, the William S. Gray Citation of Merit in 2019. Dr. Reutzel is an elected member and former president (2011\, 2017 – 2019) of the International Reading Hall of Fame. \n\nSara Rich is the founder and CEO of Just Right Reader. She is an award-winning former principal of 20+ years whose success in turning schools around came from focusing on early literacy and reading achievement. She has traveled to more than 35 states to train teachers and principals in reading and writing skill development. After her own daughter struggled with reading\, Sara started Just Right Reader with the mission to make reading fun and for students to learn to read with engaging decodables that are representative of students in America’s schools. \n\nAbout the Moderator \nChristy Lamb is the co-founder of The Modern Principal\, where they discuss practical strategies for doing the job while reforming the system as school leaders. She is an elementary principal in a PreK-5 building with the district’s gifted program. She knew she wanted to be in education after learning that for-profit prisons were using third-grade African American boys’ reading levels to determine the number of prisons to build in the future. SUMMARY:Creating a Thriving Inclusive Classroom Space
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kristi Houston\, Third-Grade Teacher\, Hampden Elementary School (PA); and Denise Buck\, RLA High School Teacher\, Del Valle High School (TX) \nSponsored by The Educating All Learners™ Alliance (EALA)\, An InnovateEDU Project \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nClassrooms are more than just the physical space that makes them up. They are built from both mental and physical components meant to benefit all learners involved (students\, teachers\, support staff\, you name it!). Join the Educating All Learners Alliance in a discussion with four educators from across the country about real ways teachers are making their classrooms more inclusive—without breaking the money or time bank. In this edWebinar\, we share stories of success\, considerations for challenges\, future ideas\, and the first steps to get you started. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nKristi Houston is teaching her 20th year in education. She has taught kindergarten\, second grade\, and now third grade for the last six years. She is a mentor teacher at her school and also hosts student teachers in her classroom. She serves on multiple committees such as the Science/Social Studies Curriculum team and the Math Curriculum team. She strives to incorporate SEL throughout the entire day. In addition\, she brings in hands-on STEAM activities to help her students activate their learning. \n\nDenise Buck\, RLA High School Teacher\, is in her 13th year teaching in the border city of El Paso. She began her career as a full-time ESL teacher and had to balance teaching curricula with teaching a language as well. While it was not easy\, she believes it has shaped who she is as an educator today. In her classroom\, she ensures that her students have access to vocabulary at all times as well as a safe space (Remind/Google Classroom) to ask her questions without anyone else hearing/seeing. This allows her to “indirectly” help her students without placing a target on their backs. High schoolers need to feel confident in their learning before they take risks and believing that their teacher has their best interests at heart helps with this as well. \n  \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Classroom Environments: From Class Set-up to Student Engagement by Design community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, and receive invitations to upcoming edLeader Panels. \n\n \nThe Educating All Learners Alliance (EALA) is an uncommon coalition of organizations committed to resource sharing and community-building that supports the efforts of the education community to meet the needs of students with disabilities or learning differences. The Alliance represents voices from a diverse range of communities\, including disability advocacy\, parent\, special education\, civil rights\, and K-12 nonprofit education organizations. EALA leads the development of a Resource Library\, Tech Tool Library\, events\, podcasts\, and working groups in order to bring awareness to the challenges and opportunities surrounding students with disabilities in K12 education\, and how we can best support them.

Students of color\, and specifically Black students\, continue to struggle with lower retention rates and higher dropout rates. \nIn this edWebinar\, we learn how Baltimore City Public Schools (MD)\, serving predominantly Black students\, used innovation and technology to address student persistence in their mission to close the opportunity gap. Hear from educational leaders who collaborated with an eLearning firm focused on diversity\, equity\, and inclusion to develop Success Seminars\, online self-paced courses for Baltimore City high school students enrolled in college credit programming. You hear insights on how each of the Success Seminars make the “hidden curriculum” of college visible and utilize digital learning as tools for culturally sustaining pedagogy\, helping students of color develop the stamina and sense of belonging they need in order to thrive in Baltimore’s emerging college-going culture. You hear insights from the district- and school-level personnel on the ways that they believe the Success Seminars will help them to talk about student success in new ways. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to high school teachers\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJennifer Dunn is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of educational experience in both the K-12 sector and adult education. SUMMARY:English Learners and Dyslexia Screening: Uncover the Root of Reading Difficulties
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rachel Brown\, Ph.D.\, Senior Research Associate\, Illuminate Education\, Inc.; and John Bielinski\, Ph.D.\, Senior Director of Research and Development\, Illuminate Education\, Inc. \nSponsored by Illuminate Education \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nDyslexia affects individuals from all languages and cultures\, including students learning English. However\, accurate identification of dyslexia in EL students requires a balance between recognizing their emerging English skills alongside proficiency in the first language. It is important not to make assumptions about the source of an EL student’s reading difficulties. Instead\, educators need to obtain and analyze the right assessment data so that the correct source of reading difficulties is found\, and acquire information about language development in the student’s native language. \nFollowing the popularity of their September 2022 edWebinar\, Demystifying Dyslexia: The History\, Research\, and Best Practices for Supporting All Students\, Renaissance Learning experts Drs. John Bielinski and Rachel Brown are back to discuss the intersection of ELs and dyslexia screening. View this edWebinar to deep dive into using science-based screening tools to determine an EL’s risk for reading difficulties like dyslexia and plan effective supports. They discuss: \n\nCommon misconceptions surrounding ELs and their potential to build reading proficiency and achieve academic success\nHow to use science-based reading screeners and progress-monitoring tools to determine an EL’s risk for dyslexia\nReasons to screen in both English and an EL’s native language to uncover underlying reading difficulties like dyslexia\nThe importance of gathering background knowledge and conducting interviews to understand a student’s educational history\, exposure to oral and written language\, and native language reading proficiency\nSteps for determining if an EL has a learning disability like dyslexia using high-quality reading instruction practices based on the Science of Reading\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, school counselors and psychologists\, and assessment and intervention directors. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Rachel Brown began her career as a middle school social studies teacher. She quickly learned that many of her students could not read well enough to understand assigned texts. This led Dr. Brown to earn certification as a special educator. Having learned that special education was not the answer to all students’ learning challenges\, she earned her Ph.D. in school psychology and special education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2000. She was a faculty member in educational and school psychology at the University of Southern Maine for 16 years and then joined Renaissance Learning where she currently serves as a senior research associate. Dr. Brown now teaches in the Special Education Department at the University of Southern Maine. Her research focuses on effective reading instruction and assessment within a Multi-Tiered System of Support. \n \nDr. John Bielinski is a psychometrician by training and has led development of educational tests and educational research in the industry for 20 years. He began his career in education policy at the National Center on Educational Outcomes and currently works at Renaissance Learning as a senior director of research and development. His expertise is in CBM and modeling growth. \n \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Teaching Reading and Writing community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nIlluminate Education partners with K-12 educators to equip them with data to serve the whole child and reach new levels of student performance. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ann Crilley\, Senior Manager\, Community Engagement\, Discovery Education; Cameron Waldo\, Manager\, Community Engagement\, Discovery Education; and Michael Tyler\, Author\, Speaker\, and Thought Leader \nSponsored by Discovery Education \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nNow\, more than ever\, educators are looking for resources to assist in having critical conversations and helping students build positive habits. As such\, access to quality health and wellness content has never been more important. \nDiscovery Education and its global corporate and community partners have joined forces to build health and wellness resources dedicated to supporting educators\, students\, and families through equitable access to meaningful learning tools. Health and wellness are essential to identity\, development\, how we relate to one another\, and how we experience the world around us. Watch as we explore this catalog of no-cost tools and discuss best practices for implementation in the classroom. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nAnn Crilley is a former high school math teacher\, instructional technology coach\, curriculum and professional development writer. Now\, she spends her days supporting teachers in falling in love with Discovery Education and using their resources in the classroom. A dog mom of two poodles\, she also loves exploring Kentucky’s beauty each weekend! \n \n\nCameron Waldo is a former kindergarten teacher and childhood wellness advocate. In his role at Discovery Education\, he finds creative ways to bring educators together to provide tools that will help reach all learners. \n \nSince 2003\, Michael Tyler’s been putting pen to paper\, authoring Water for the Soul: A Father’s Hope for His Son\, a collection of life lessons\, and Sow the Seeds: A Composition in Verse\, a poetry journal. But in 2005\, when one day his son came home from elementary school and shared that he’d been called a racially disparaging name by a classmate on the playground\, Tyler began thinking differently about his writing. He knew he wanted to talk with his son about what happened\, so he looked to children’s books to help him approach this challenging conversation in a way his 5-year-old could grasp. So\, Tyler started reading… \nAfter two weeks and 347 children’s books later\, Tyler concluded that the book he needed to help explain to his son race and racism didn’t yet exist\, so instead he’d need to write it. That’s how Tyler’s first children’s book\, The Skin You Live In\, was born. \nAs an African American man and father to biracial children\, Tyler is acutely aware of the world’s “-isms.” To combat racism\, sexism and more\, he writes affirming\, empowering stories to engender self-worth in kids. Through verse and rhyme\, Tyler transforms meaty topics and difficult concepts\, including race\, acceptance and equity\, into language kids can both understand and enjoy. He is passionate about arming parents and educators with the resources and tools (including social and emotional learning curriculum around two of his titles) they need to start tough dialogues with their kids and students. \nWhen he’s not writing\, hosting a virtual reading hour or participating in programming around his books\, Tyler gets satisfaction through cooking for others. One of his favorite ways to give and receive love is watching someone’s eyes light up after taking their first bite of his butter cake. Tyler resides in Chicago with his wife\, Alicia. \n  \n \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Creating a Positive School Climate community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nDiscovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources\, engaging content\, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms. Are there certain habits or practices that we can use to cultivate resilience? Within each of the 7 Mindsets\, there are specific thought structures that we can focus on to develop and nurture resilience. Using research from 7 Mindsets as well as other contributors\, this edWebinar helps to strengthen the reserves of educators who may be struggling with bouncing back\, who may want to deepen their understanding of themselves and how they choose to respond to things\, and who understand the importance of thriving\, not just surviving\, as educators. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, librarians\, school counselors\, and education technology leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJulie Spierto is a senior educational services manager for 7 Mindsets.
