SUMMARY:A Translanguaging Pedagogy: Working Towards Equity and Social Justice for Bilingual Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Kate Seltzer\, Assistant Professor of Bilingual and ESL Education\, Rowan University; and Dr. Susana Ibarra Johnson\, Assistant Professor of Bilingual Education and TESOL in the School of Teacher Preparation\, Administration\, and Leadership\, New Mexico State University \nSponsored by Brookes Publishing \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThis edWebinar introduces translanguaging as a culturally and linguistically sustaining way for educators to work with students labeled English language learners\, also referred to as emergent bilinguals. The presenters first explore translanguaging as theory and then “translate” that theory into practice across different K-12 classrooms. \nParticular emphasis is placed on the ways that translanguaging theory and pedagogy support socio-emotional identities and contribute to movements for equity and social justice for historically marginalized students. Viewers have the opportunity to ask questions\, engage in conversation\, and brainstorm ways to bring translanguaging theory and pedagogy to their own contexts. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, multilingual directors\, and instructional coaches. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Kate Seltzer is an assistant professor of bilingual and ESL education at Rowan University. A former high school English language arts teacher in New York City\, Dr. Seltzer currently teaches pre- and in-service teachers of bilingual students. Her current research involves working with English teachers to cultivate a critical stance and approach to teaching emergent bilinguals. She is co-author of the book\, The Translanguaging Classroom: Leveraging Student Bilingualism for Learning\, as well as several book chapters and articles in journals such as English Education; Language\, Identity and Education; Research in the Teaching of English; and TESOL Quarterly. \n\nDr. Susana Ibarra Johnson is an assistant professor of bilingual education and TESOL in the School of Teacher Preparation\, Administration\, and Leadership at New Mexico State University. Dr. Ibarra Johnson is one of the co-authors of The Translanguaging Classroom: Leveraging Student Bilingualism for Learning along with Dr. Ofelia García and Dr. Kate Seltzer. Her commitment to improving the education of bilingual students is grounded in her experience as a bilingual learner and teacher. She has been a professional development specialist\, associate researcher for WIDA\, director of bilingual multicultural education programs at Bernalillo Public Schools\, and most recently\, a district biliteracy specialist for Albuquerque Public Schools. Her research focuses on translanguaging pedagogy in bilingual education and English language development contexts. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Helping ELL\, ESL\, and Bilingual Students Succeed community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nFounded in 1978\, Brookes is an independent\, highly respected educational publishing company with a strong focus on helping all people—with and without disabilities—reach their potential. SUMMARY:Disunity in Reading Instruction: The High Cost of Confusion
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Terrie Noland\, Ph.D.\, CALP\, Vice President of Educator Initiatives\, Learning Ally\nModerated by Elizabeth Zwerg\, Community Manager\, Learning Ally \nSponsored by Learning Ally \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nStudents will listen to the teacher that is in front of them. If they are learning disproven methods such as cueing in a general education setting and then learning decoding methods in intervention classes\, they will do what the teacher in front of them is asking them to do. Students cannot decipher which method is appropriate or harmful. The disunity of instruction is causing confusion\, stress\, and detrimental outcomes for students and educators. In this edWebinar\, the presenter provides examples of what is happening when disunity is at play and\, more importantly\, how educators can lead large to begin a path toward implementing a unified approach to instruction. Viewers will: \n\nUnderstand the harm and setbacks created for students when disunity is at play\nBe convinced of the dire need to teach evidence-based practices aligned to the Science of Reading in every space and place where students are learning\nWalk away with steps on how to begin leading towards a path of unity of instruction\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nListen. SUMMARY:Challenging Behavior in the Autism Classroom: What Can We Do?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rachel Emmer\, M.S.\, CCC-SLP\, Teaching & Learning Ambassador\, STAGES® Learning; and Frankie Kietzman\, Manager of Educational Relationships\, STAGES® Learning \nSponsored by STAGES® Learning \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nEven with established foundational classroom management practices in place\, challenging behavior can and will still happen in classrooms supporting students with autism. When these challenges begin\, teachers can curb the behaviors by analyzing their data to determine the function or cause. Once teachers have determined the “why” a behavior is occurring\, then they can develop a plan to prevent it from occurring in the first place and tailor explicit instruction to reshape behaviors or reinforce replacement behaviors better suited to meeting the students’ needs. This session provides examples of proactive strategies\, explicit teaching techniques and tools\, and reinforcement strategies to ensure that more adaptive\, appropriate behaviors begin to take place. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, especially those teaching special education\, and school and district leaders. \n\n \nAbout the Presenters \nRachel Emmer is a speech-language pathologist and worked in public schools for 15 years supporting children in a variety of settings and specialized classrooms at the elementary level\, at an early childhood school\, and as part of a district team supporting behavior for students with special needs across the district. Rachel has a passion for working with students and staff to support communication and behavior in the classroom. Currently\, she works for STAGES® Learning and provides professional development and customer care. Rachel has a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University\, a Master of Science in communication disorders from The University of Texas at Dallas and has her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. \n\nFrankie Kietzman is a manager of educational relationships for STAGES® Learning with experience teaching as an elementary teacher\, a self-contained autism teacher for elementary and secondary students\, and an autism specialist and coach for teachers dealing with challenging behaviors. Frankie’s passion for supporting children and adults with autism originates from growing up with her brother who is deaf and has autism. As one of her brother’s legal guardians\, she continues to learn about post-graduate opportunities and outcomes for people with autism. She has a passion for peer-mediated interventions\, social-emotional learning\, visual supports\, and community-based instruction. Frankie has a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in elementary education\, a master’s degree in high and low incidence disabilities from Pittsburg State University\, and in 2021\, completed another master’s degree in advanced leadership in special education from Pittsburg State University. \n  \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Teaching Students with Autism community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nFor 25 years\, STAGES® Learning has been dedicated to creating quality teaching tools to help educators provide the best learning opportunities for students on the autism spectrum. SUMMARY:Secondary Newcomers: Equitable Pathways for Diverse EL Profiles
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lindsey Bird\, Education Coach and Consultant\, Lindsey Bird Consulting and Teach Plus California \nSponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIn general terms\, the K-12 school system is designed to teach students how to read kindergarten through third grade\, and then shifts to students relying on reading to learn fourth grade and beyond. Students reading below grade level in the upper grades of elementary have statistically faced an uphill challenge when compared to peers reading at grade level. Yet the demographic that too often gets left out of this conversation about the “remediation” of grade-level competency is a group of students who were not even physically present in U.S. schools during those vital foundational years of primary education—newcomers. \nNewcomers who enter the U.S. school system after the primary grades arrive in classes with curricula and standards assuming some degree of English proficiency. Yet for many\, not only is English a new language\, but so is the Roman alphabet. And for many\, gaps in their formal education mean language is only one of the hurdles these motivated new Americans face. \nWatch this edWebinar to learn how to best address newcomers entering U.S. schools post-primary education\, starting first with our mindsets. Viewing these students for the assets they bring\, rather than the deficits they might be perceived to have when compared to their native-born peers\, is vital. Then\, hear about the importance of exploring the diversity within the various EL profiles newcomers bring into our classrooms and designing equitable pathways that accelerate (not remediate) students toward English proficiency and grade-level content mastery. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, especially multilingual teachers\, and school and district leaders. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nLindsey Bird recently left a 17-year teaching career\, the past decade of which was spent as the developer\, instructor\, and coordinator of the Language Institute\, a specialized program serving immigrant\, refugee\, and asylum-seeking high school students in Modesto\, California\, which was nationally recognized as a model for supporting the needs of newcomer students. \nLindsey is a social justice champion and ally to immigrant students and families at the local\, state\, and national levels. An alumna of the Teach Plus California Fellowship\, Lindsey advocated the state legislature for tenure reform\, as well as successfully inserting explicit protections for newcomer students in the education code. How can we\, as educators and school administrators\, translate the research into instruction that unlocks reading foundations for young students and sets them up for reading and writing success throughout their school years? \nIn this edWebinar\, we cover the latest research for foundational reading and explain how it translates to supporting and leading Pre-K classrooms. Dr. Ray Reutzel\, an award-winning early literacy researcher\, walks us through research-tested best practices for alphabet knowledge and transitioning students to CVC word reading. He details the letter-a-day plan for alphabet knowledge acquisition and explains the “why” behind the recommended lesson plan. The research covered in this edWebinar reflects best practices for all Pre-K classrooms\, but is particularly important for districts and schools with high mobility brought on by high poverty or other factors. \nWe also go over what to look for in educational materials to support the research-backed lesson plans. How does the research translate to high-quality and skill-appropriate books to incorporate everything we know about how kids learn to read? \nWhether you are an administrator supporting multiple Pre-K classrooms or an educator working directly with Pre-K students\, you walk away with deeper knowledge of and tactical solutions for implementation of the latest research around increasing early literacy achievement to set students up for successful academic careers. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to Pre-K teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \n\n\nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Ray Reutzel is currently serving as Senior Research Fellow in the Center for the School of the Future at Utah State University. He has published more than 235 articles\, chapters\, and books on early literacy and early childhood education and received over $17 million in extramural funding. He is the former dean of the College of Education at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. He also held the Emma Eccles Jones Endowed Chair Distinguished Professorship at Utah State University for 14 years. His research on early literacy in Grades K–3 earned him the International Literacy Association’s highest recognition\, the William S. Gray Citation of Merit in 2019. Dr. Reutzel is an elected member and former president (2011\, 2017 – 2019) of the International Reading Hall of Fame. \n\nSara Rich is the founder and CEO of Just Right Reader. She is an award-winning former principal of 20+ years whose success in turning schools around came from focusing on early literacy and reading achievement. She has traveled to more than 35 states to train teachers and principals in reading and writing skill development. After her own daughter struggled with reading\, Sara started Just Right Reader with the mission to make reading fun and for students to learn to read with engaging decodables that are representative of students in America’s schools. \n\nAbout the Moderator \nChristy Lamb is the co-founder of The Modern Principal\, where they discuss practical strategies for doing the job while reforming the system as school leaders. She is an elementary principal in a PreK-5 building with the district’s gifted program. She knew she wanted to be in education after learning that for-profit prisons were using third-grade African American boys’ reading levels to determine the number of prisons to build in the future. Christy has since held many roles and leadership positions between elementary and middle school serving as an ELA teacher\, instructional coach\, reading specialist\, admin intern\, assistant principal\, and principal. Up until the 11th year of her career\, she had never had the same job/classroom/building/district two years in a row. She now craves collaboration with professionals both in and out of education to help make her dream of an equitable learning environment a reality. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Engaging Early Learners community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, and receive invitations to upcoming edLeader Panels. \n\n \nJust Right Reader’s mission is to make reading fun and for students to learn to read with engaging decodables that are representative of students in America’s schools.
