SUMMARY:Sound Walls: The Benefits of Using Them for ALL Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mary Dahlgren\, Ed.D.\, Founder and CEO\, Tools 4 Reading\, LLC\nModerated by Terrie Noland\, Ph.D.\, CALP\, Vice President of Educator Initiatives\, Learning Ally \nSponsored by Learning Ally \nRegistration for the live presentation is now full. Register to receive the recording below. \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nUsing a sound wall in your classroom can transform instruction! Because of the Science of Reading\, we are becoming more aware of the role of phonetics and phonology in beginning reading and spelling. While learning to speak happens long before learning to read\, teaching how speech maps to print has not always been a part of general classroom instruction. Developing phonemic awareness to a prescribed level must happen prior to the development of automatic sight word reading. \nExplicitly teaching the sounds\, how they are produced in the mouth\, attending to what is happening with your tongue\, teeth\, and lips and the flow of air makes learning more concrete. In this edWebinar\, we examine the 44 speech sounds\, how to introduce them and build a sound wall with consonants and vowel phonemes\, and discuss strategies for engagement as part of daily practice. These are some of the stepping stones to orthographic mapping so all students can become fluent and proficient readers. Educators will: \n\nLearn about the importance of articulation and the connection to phoneme awareness\nUnderstand the reason for the layout of a sound wall and how it is more student friendly than a word wall\nAnalyze common phonological errors students make and how to give corrective feedback\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nMary Ellis Dahlgren\, Ed.D. is Founder and President of Tools 4 Reading. She is an experienced educator with over 35 years in the field\, having served as a dyslexia therapist\, elementary classroom teacher\, international literacy consultant\, and published author. She is also the author of a respected and successful phonics tool kit which includes Kid Lips and Phoneme-Grapheme Instructional Cards for teachers of elementary\, special education\, and English language learners. Dr. Dahlgren is a past national trainer for the distinguished teacher curriculum Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS)\, and President of The Reading League Oklahoma Chapter. She says\, “My passion is to help every professional involved in teaching reading feel empowered\, equipped and confident in providing the highest quality instruction possible.” \n\nAbout the Moderator \nListen. Learn. Teach. It’s that simple. Terrie Noland uses this philosophy as an innovator and a motivator\, and it’s evident as she leads\, coaches and mentors thousands of K-12 educators about the science of reading each year. She has a unique perspective on the need to unify all stakeholders around a vision for education to smash the reading divide for the millions of struggling readers. Her daily mission is to add value to educators to help influence transformational changes in school districts across the country by addressing the needs of marginalized students. Terrie seeks to share her expertise and passion to encourage and to illuminate a path towards success and measurable outcomes. \nIf you looked at Terrie’s resume\, you would be confused. Her undergraduate and graduate degree work placed her in the field of criminal justice. However\, it was through continuous listening and learning that led her on a journey in education starting out in preschool teaching and administration\, then becoming a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) and earning a Ph.D. in literacy and educational leadership from St. John’s University. Terrie is also a John Maxwell certified speaker and coach. \nAs Vice President of Educator Initiatives at Learning Ally\, Terrie works to ignite enthusiasm and excitement by building champion educators and administrators on creating cultures of literacy and learning. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Empowering Struggling Readers community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nLearning Ally is a leading education solutions organization committed to transforming the lives of struggling learners. SUMMARY:English Learners: Focusing on the Whole Student Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Diana Ceja\, Mathematics Administrator\, Riverside County Office of Education (CA); Karon Akins\, Mathematics Administrator\, Riverside County Office of Education (CA); and Twana Young\, Vice President of Curriculum and Instruction\, MIND Research Institute \nSponsored by ST Math\, Created by MIND Research Institute \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nMath has been called the universal language. More than any other subject\, math skills are the top predictor for student success. But with lengthy word problems and other language-heavy instructional methods\, how can English learners have the same access to this essential and universal language? And it doesn’t end in the classroom—providing equal access to math success for ELs includes considering their learning needs at home. What does it look like to support students throughout the entire student ecosystem? \nThis approach starts in the classroom\, but that is just the beginning. When we create a true student-centered approach\, where students are the ones actively driving the learning process\, everything else can build on that success. In this session\, we discuss what is working through instructional practices\, supporting teacher development\, supporting families\, and engaging the community. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-8 teachers\, school and district leaders\, education technology leaders\, and educators and leaders involved with English learners\, bilingual learners\, and math. \nAbout the Presenters \nDiana Ceja is an administrator with the Riverside County Office of Education specializing in TK-12 curriculum\, instruction\, and formative assessment with an emphasis on mathematics\, equity\, and social and racial justice. SUMMARY:Oral and Written Language: Understanding the Differences and Implications for Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Claude Goldenberg\, Ph.D.\, Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Education\, Emeritus\, Stanford University \nSponsored by Illuminate Education \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nAs long as there are no brain injuries or disabilities\, the ability to understand and produce oral language (listening and speaking) comes naturally to humans. Oral language evolved in our species about 300\,000 years ago—it’s built into our DNA. The same is not true of written language\, which was invented a short 5\,000 years ago. Alphabetic languages are even more recent. \nIn order to become literate\, individuals must learn how to access and process written language\, which in turn requires learning how speech sounds are represented in print. Full\, comprehensive literacy requires much more\, but explicitly linking speech to print is an essential step in the process. SUMMARY:Word Problems Beyond Whole Numbers: Solving the Problem of Problem Solving
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, Vice President\, Content and Research\, ORIGO Education \nSponsored by ORIGO Education \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nProblem solving is an overarching goal of mathematics instruction and a perpetual challenge for teachers. Children are incredible problem solvers\, especially when solving practical problems with personal relevance. Why then do these skills almost seem to vanish when students face word problems in math class? Through deliberate work with mathematical language and thoughtful exploration of the written problem prior to computing\, teachers can support students towards greater success with word problems and problem solving in general. \nOnce students understand the work of the four operations with whole numbers\, how can we support them to generalize and extend this understanding to problems involving fractions and decimals? In this fourth edWebinar of our four-part series\, Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. discusses strategies for helping students connect their existing knowledge to the new contexts and situations available when rational numbers and integers are considered. You leave the session with practical strategies for supporting students to recognize operations with their ever-expanding knowledge of number.
