SUMMARY:Teach Reading Comprehension with Explicit\, Whole-Class Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kristina Smekens\, President\, Lead Consultant\, Smekens Education\nModerated by Monica Myers\, Playbook Pro Remote Coach\, Smekens Education \nSponsored by Smekens Education \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nLanguage arts classrooms often read texts\, ask questions about texts\, and engage kids in text-based discussions. As important as these experiences are\, none of them count as explicit teaching or direct instruction. \nBefore asking students to dive into discussions about texts\, teachers need to do the heavy lifting by delivering focused mini-lessons on specific comprehension skills. This is the first step in gradual release—I do; you watch and listen. The teacher must explain which text details are relevant for a particular comprehension skill. The teacher must model how to put thoughts together via think alouds. The teacher must demonstrate the inference process—all without the help of the children. \nIn this edWebinar\, author and literacy consultant Kristina Smekens breaks down the architecture of every 15-minute whole-class mini-lesson. She provides practical\, ready-to-use strategies for planning and delivering K-12 comprehension instruction daily in four-step mini-lessons. Viewers learn: \n\nThe number of minutes and key information to reveal per step\nHow to progress through the phases of gradual release (i.e.\, I do\, We do\, You do) within the lesson\nHow to plan a think aloud before executing it in the lesson\nHow to present engaging comprehension lessons that “edutain”—educate and entertain\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nKristina Smekens has built a reputation for using enthusiasm\, humor\, and common sense to equip K-12 educators with practical\, demystifying strategies for teaching reading and writing. As President and Lead Consultant for Smekens Education\, she is a leader in developing new strategies to help teachers meet the demands of today’s College- and Career-Ready Standards. She and her associates share those strategies with teachers around the globe through on-site professional development\, virtual and in-person seminars\, and an always-growing pool of print\, digital\, and video resources. Kristina has authored more than 50 books\, guides\, and classroom tools designed to help teachers implement best-practice literacy strategies. The Comprehension Playbook; Launching the Writer’s Workshop: Grades K-2; and Launching the Writer’s Workshop: Grades 3-12 are among the most popular titles. \n\nAbout the Moderator \nMonica Myers is an enthusiastic advocate of best-practice instruction in reading comprehension. SUMMARY:Targeting ELA Learning Gaps with Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Karrie Berglund\, Director of Education\, Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc.; Diana Yoder\, Education Specialist\, Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc.; and Dave Cuomo\, Education Specialist\, Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc. \nSponsored by Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc. \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nPandemic learning disruptions had a significant impact on our students\, especially in the areas of mathematics and English language arts (ELA). ELA is broadly defined as speaking\, listening\, reading\, and writing\, all of which are foundational skills for a successful academic career. \nEstimates are that elementary students lost about one-quarter of a year in ELA skills due to pandemic restrictions\, and the effects on low-income students were even greater. How can schools help students regain this ground? The first step is to fully engage students in their learning by offering exciting and impactful learning opportunities. \nIn this edWebinar\, we explore how the innately inspiring and engaging subject of astronomy can be used to target ELA. We share ideas for addressing ELA skills\, such as: \n\nReading stories under the stars to young students\, then discussing those stories to gauge comprehension\nSharing constellation legends from around the world\nHaving students write and present their own star stories\nUsing astronomical images to inspire student-created poetry\n\nAlthough the presenters focus on presenting in a planetarium dome\, many of the activities shared can be done successfully in a standard classroom. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nKarrie Berglund is the Director of Education at and co-founder of Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc.\, a company that has manufactured and sold digital planetarium systems worldwide since 2003. Prior to Digitalis\, Karrie worked at Seattle’s Pacific Science Center\, teaching in the on-site planetarium\, as well as at schools all over Washington state. Karrie enjoys teaching and learning science of all kinds\, but she is especially fond of astronomy. She considers planetariums to be the world’s best classrooms and dreams of a day when all students have access to such an inspiring\, mind-opening tool. \n\n \nDiana Yoder is an Education Specialist with Digitalis Education Solutions. She studied physics and astronomy at Mississippi State University and Clemson University\, earning her master’s in 2016. Since then\, she has enjoyed an exciting career in planetariums. Starting out at the South Carolina State Museum\, and later moving on to the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery\, she has led all sorts of public and school programs for a variety of subjects in and out of the dome. Her favorite part of working at the museums was that every day was something new and the teams were constantly looking for creative solutions to educate their audience best. In 2022\, she joined the Digitalis team. When she isn’t spreading the word about how useful planetariums can be\, she enjoys working on new\, standards-based lessons to share with the community. \n\n \nDave Cuomo joined Digitalis Education Solutions as an Education Specialist in April 2019. Before joining Digitalis\, he worked as the Supervisor of Pacific Science Center’s Willard Smith Planetarium in Seattle\, Washington and as Coordinator of Space Odyssey at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in Denver\, Colorado. Dave started working as an informal science educator in 2003. Since that time\, he has dissected hundreds of sheep hearts\, conducted vacuum chamber experiments on numerous marshmallow astronauts\, and inspired curiosity in thousands of people of all ages. \nDave is passionate about live planetarium programming. At the Willard Smith Planetarium\, he created a schedule that consisted of six live presentations every day. He researched and wrote live presentations about Chinese astronomy\, the physics of light\, planetary science\, climate change\, and Earth science. Dave holds a BA in world history from the Metropolitan State University of Denver\, with a minor in theatre. \n  \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Accelerate Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nDigitalis staff are science education experts and technologists. We develop our own simulation and interface software\, and all of our sales staff have taught in planetariums. We understand science educator needs\, and we use our own products to present programs to ensure they will meet your requirements.

SUMMARY:Driving Impact\, Action\, and Achievement with Teacher Collaboration That Works!
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Steve Ventura\, Author and Professional Learning Consultant\, Advanced Collaborative Solutions \nSponsored by Advanced Collaborative Solutions \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nEducators have a greater impact on student achievement when they work together. Yet collaborative models like PLCs often become unguided or misdirected\, and thus ineffective. When schools and districts de-emphasize individual practice and promote collective ability\, both educator collaboration and student achievement increase. \nWith Achievement Teams\, educators use a four-step protocol designed to drive collaborative conversations that lead to new learning\, ultimately resulting in a positive impact on student achievement. Teacher collaboration becomes more meaningful and impactful when schools implement Achievement Teams as part of their ongoing professional development. Watch author and professional learning consultant Steve Ventura present an informative edWebinar where you learn: \n\nThe research behind and the foundation of collaborative protocols that really work\nHow Achievement Teams can either replace or support existing team structures like PLCs\nHow to get started with a research-based model for educator collaboration in your school\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, instructional coaches\, and teacher leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nSteve Ventura is the president and lead consultant at Advanced Collaborative Solutions. Simple is NOT a trending concept in education. But there is a place for simplicity. We don’t trivialize school improvement by suggesting it’s easy. But when we embrace the values of simplicity and efficacy\, teams of teachers and leaders can promote change\, keep colleagues on course\, and provide value to each other\, day by day. At Advanced Collaborative Solutions\, we don’t do philosophies\, big-picture thinking\, or strategic planning. Now\, 25 years later\, Empowering Writers is used in over 1\,000 schools to develop enthusiastic\, confident writers and engaged readers. Dea continues to reach beyond the classroom. She has trained thousands of teachers\, co-authored over 40 titles\, and is always developing new content. \n\n \nAfter attending only one workshop\, Jennifer Seaton quickly realized that Empowering Writers was the practical approach to teaching writing that she had desperately been searching for. She now serves as EW’s Director of Learning and Development\, where she partners with school and district leaders in helping their staff advance their knowledge and skills in writing. SUMMARY:10 Math Practices to Foster Problem-Solving for Elementary Learners
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Albert Vilalta Riera\, Math Learning Expert\, Innovamat; Dr. Hollyce Schoepp\, K-12 Supervisor of STEM\, Vernon Township School District (NJ); and Bernat Portell\, Head of Expansion\, Innovamat \nSponsored by Innovamat \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThe best way to bring competency-based and meaningful learning into the elementary math classroom is to create a problem-solving environment. What traits define a good math problem? How can we foster rich class discussions? What manipulatives should we use? How can we manage differentiated instruction within the same problem? In this edWebinar\, we discuss 10 practices to foster a problem-solving classroom environment that develops meaningful math understanding and explore them through different examples of rich math activities. Viewers: \n\nHave the chance to face math activities as students\nListen to all the learning opportunities beneath the activities\nExpand their understanding of best practices for learning math through discovery\nLearn ideas on how to help students develop meaningful math skills while learning the curricular content\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to elementary teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nAlbert Vilalta Riera is one of Innovamat’s learning experts. Currently\, he is a part-time professor in the Math Education Department of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB)\, where he trains pre-service teachers while conducting the last research for his Ph.D. He combines his university role with government teacher training in Spain and\, above all\, the conceptualization of Innovamat’s curriculum and activities. \n  \nDr. Hollyce Schoepp is the K-12 STEM supervisor for Vernon Township School District in Vernon\, New Jersey. She earned a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University in curriculum and instruction of STEM education and a Master of Science degree in biology from the University of Maryland\, College Park. Dr. Schoepp brings over 20 years of educational experience serving as a teacher\, mentor\, educational leader\, and professional development facilitator. She understands how to meet students (and teachers) where they are and how to foster engagement in the classroom. An advocate for the researched-based incorporation of concepts of everyday resilience into the classroom ecosystem\, Dr. Schoepp’s current focus involves using evidence-based practices in the creation of high-quality learning environments that result in the development of durable academic assets and cumulative learning. \n\n \nBernat Portell is leading Innovamat’s expansion in the U.S.\, Italy\, and Brazil. He has spent his career working with teachers and school and district leaders around the world to facilitate pedagogical change. He earned his BSc in international management from Bocconi University (Italy) and studied at the University of Notre Dame (U.S.) and the National University of Singapore. \n  \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Building Understanding in Mathematics community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nInnovamat is a K-8 math program aimed at improving children’s learning. We want kids to develop core skills such as reasoning and problem-solving in class\, and to do so through experience and challenges. We provide teachers with a set of resources to bring about this pedagogical change\, leaving the textbook behind. \nWe have built an easy-to-use and evidence-based product that is aligned with the latest research on education (NCTM\, OCDE\, Nrich & PISA) and is used by 330\,000 students in 7 countries. On top of that\, we use a gamified platform for students to practice that provides weekly reports on the student’s progress\, making differentiated instruction a cornerstone of ours.
