SUMMARY:UDL and Learner Variability: Using Both Frameworks to Design Classrooms so Each Learner Meets Their Potential
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lindsay Jones\, CEO\, CAST; and Sarah Wisecarver\, Ventures Educator\, UDL Team Facilitator\, Hampstead Central School (NH)\nModerated by Barbara Pape\, Senior Director\, Learner Variability Project\, Digital Promise \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nCAST works to make education inclusive and invented Universal Design for Learning (UDL)\, a framework that guides the design of instructional goals\, assessments\, methods\, and materials. The goal is to ensure all learners can access and participate in meaningful\, challenging learning opportunities. This vision is shared by the principle of learner variability as demonstrated in Digital Promise’s FREE tool\, the Learner Variability Navigator (LVN). Based on Todd Rose’s theories and research in his book\, The End of Average\, learner variability is the recognition that every student has a unique set of strengths and challenges across a whole child framework that are interconnected and vary according to context. When you understand learner variability\, you see a design challenge\, not a student problem. \nIn this edWebinar\, you learn about innovative ways to use both frameworks to design classrooms that allow each student to meet their potential: \n\nThe principles of UDL\nHow these principles are put into action in the classroom\nWhat learner variability is and how it connects with UDL\nHow the strategies in the LVN can be used to complement the UDL framework\nWhy research matters and undergirds both UDL and LVN\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, and special education educators. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nLindsay E. SUMMARY:Mindsets Leadership Series: The Cost of Underutilizing Teacher Talent
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Rosa Coronado\, Senior Director for Academic Employee Relations\, San Jose State University; Joe Schneider\, Principal\, Liberty Park Elementary (FL); Karen Whetsell\, Instructional Superintendent\, Central Region Secondary Schools (FL); David Samore\, Ed.D.\, CEO\, David Samore & Associates\, LLC; and Aubrey Escobar\, M.Ed.\, Chief Education Officer\, Mindsets Learning \nSponsored by Mindsets Learning \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThe challenge of teacher retention continues to worsen in the U.S. in spite of this issue becoming the number-one concern of most school districts. As schools began to open up and return to brick and mortar\, the American public’s initial euphoria and celebration of teachers gave way to hypercriticism and distrust of teacher judgement. Post-pandemic\, large numbers of students have not returned to public school classrooms\, and many remain in a home-school or non-traditional environment. \nRecent research reveals that one of the main reasons teachers leave the classroom—in addition to increased hostility from parents and politicians\, top-down mandates of non-educators\, and lock-step curricular expectations—is the dwindling space for creativity. Teachers feel victimized\, not empowered. What can be done to bring teachers back to the conversation determining leadership? Does a round table of ideas exist where their experience and expertise are both sought out and respected? When teachers leave the profession after a handful of years\, what has changed to ensure that current teachers stay in our classrooms? Can we assign a value—of any kind—to empowering teachers in decision making and problem solving? Can we collaborate more and delegate less\, so teachers are integral to the interpretation and execution of directives? \nThis recorded edWebinar delivers a lively and provocative conversation where innovative ideas are celebrated and status-quo practices are challenged. It is of interest to K-12 school and district leaders as well as teachers. \nThis edWebinar is part three in a three-part series on leadership. View part one\, Mindsets Leadership Series: The Hard Truth About Thought Leadership in Action\, and part two\, Mindsets Leadership Series: Upskilling Teachers for Today and Tomorrow. \n  \n\nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Rosa E. SUMMARY:Moving Past the Reading Wars: Peaceniks Lead the Way
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jan Hasbrouck\, Ph.D.\, Researcher and Consultant\, JH Educational Services\, Inc.; Margie Gillis\, Ed.D.\, President\, Literacy How\, Inc.; Jeannine Herron\, Ph.D.\, Research Neuropsychologist\, Director\, Talking Fingers; and Jan Wasowicz\, Ph.D.\, Founder and CEO\, Learning By Design\, Inc.\, SPELL-Links\nModerated by Terrie Noland\, Ph.D.\, CALP\, Vice President of Educator Initiatives\, Learning Ally \nSponsored by Learning Ally \nWatch the Recording Listen to the PodcastRead the Article \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIn this edLeader Panel\, you hear from a group of researchers and practitioners who have dubbed themselves the “Reading Peaceniks” after meeting for two years and searching for ways to end the divisiveness of the reading wars. The goal of the Peaceniks is to bring together a broad spectrum across disciplines within literacy education to realize that there is more in common than there are differences. There are meaningful ways to present essential direct instruction that provide children with oral language development and the alphabetic coding that research has shown they need to develop into joyful readers and writers. \nWith the recent paper Print-to-Speech and Speech-to-Print: Mapping Early Literacy\, published by Reading Rockets\, the panelists\, who are authors and contributing editors of the paper\, have chosen to address essential components of instructional approaches at their earliest roots—PreK to Grade 1 or 2. In this paper\, they found consensus with 35 renowned literacy thought leaders and researchers after much discussion and editing. It suggests “good practices” for early literacy that they hope will address that yearning for meaningfulness on both sides. Watch this edLeader Panel to: \n\nExplore the viewpoints\, priorities\, and commonalities from the many literacy disciplines\nDiscuss the importance of including encoding and decoding that leads to reading and writing\nLearn about actions you can take to promote harmony while spearheading a literacy revolution\n\nThis recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nJan Hasbrouck\, Ph.D. is a leading researcher\, educational consultant\, and author who works with schools in the U.S. and internationally. SUMMARY:Making Science Accessible for All Learners
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Jennifer Stimpson\, Chief Programs Officer\, T.D. Jakes Foundation \nSponsored by Kognity \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nTalents and participation in the future of science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM) are leading stakeholders and school leaders to struggle with addressing the differences in STEM subjects. \nLack of recognition\, support\, and opportunities for professional growth have all been cited as reasons why some do not maintain a professional STEM career. The need for different perspectives in STEM subjects is linked to early academic experiences and how students learn what it means to be a scientist. Students are directly influenced by their learning environments and exposures\, which propels interests. As a result\, there are challenges when misconceptions about what it means to be scientists arise. The perception of what a scientist is (i.e.\, role\, responsibility\, duty) or who that person might be (race\, gender) is contrary to how they perceive themselves. \nThe question is what sets and shapes the rules for appropriate behavior in STEM subjects. In the context of science\, most members of the scientific community tend to be white\, and their cultural ideas\, perspectives\, and ideologies of non-minority determine the results of practices\, views\, and policies. In this edWebinar\, you learn how taking STEM education as a social justice issue provides an incentive for equitable education in these areas. Identity and one’s own interest and ability to persist in STEM subjects can therefore be understood in how they value or feel valued by others in STEM subjects. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to high school teachers\, school and district leaders\, education technology leaders\, science curriculum directors\, and science lead teachers. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nBlending science\, substance\, and style\, Dr. Jennifer Stimpson is an educator\, entrepreneur\, and community leader\, serving students through practice and innovative programming. She stands by the philosophy that teachers inspire students to become active lifelong learners. Dr. Stimpson\, an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator and Black female scientist\, an HBCU\, Big 12\, and Ivy League alumna\, has a statue of her likeness honoring her STEM education career. \nDr. Stimpson’s global vision to advance science literacy for middle school girls mirrors her community\, civic and public mission\, and advocacy promoting science education equity. She works to build communities through workforce readiness and access to sustainable living environments. With sharpened wit and wisdom\, Dr. Stimpson introduces girls to STEM wonders and possibilities\, inspiring them to become STEMinist women. Her community service has garnered local\, state\, and international awards and recognition. \n  \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the STEM Learning: Full STEAM Ahead community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nKognity redefines the traditional textbook and supercharges the learning process. It all began with two students who wanted to create exciting and dynamic interactive learning resources they’d always wanted to experience in classrooms. Resolving to create a modern textbook for the modern learner\, the result was Kognity.

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence in Schools: Allow or Prohibit? Ethical Considerations for Educators
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ariel Sykes\, Assistant Director of The Ethics Institute\, Kent Place School (NJ); Dr. Colin M. Potts\, Postdoctoral Technical Specialist\, North Carolina State University; Dr. Jennifer Galambos\, Head of School\, Kent Place School (NJ); and Dr. Karen Rezach\, Director of The Ethics Institute\, Kent Place School (NJ) \nSponsored by The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nWith the arrival of ChatGPT on our students’ laptops and in our classrooms\, educators are grappling with the ever-increasing use of artificial intelligence in schools. Whether writing an essay or lab report\, conducting research\, working through a math problem\, or building a presentation\, students now have access to learning aids that challenge the very definitions of “learning\,” “original work\,” and “plagiarism.” What boundaries do we set? Does “zero tolerance” toward AI’s use by students make sense if we are preparing them for the future world that they will live in? \nLearning is not the only place where AI is found in school settings. How are we\, the adults\, modeling the usage of AI to our students? Facial recognition software and monitoring systems that track student internet usage are just two examples of interventions done in the name of “school safety.” There are three clear learning objectives in this edWebinar: \n\nA technology specialist helps you to understand the use\, purpose\, and indications for artificial intelligence tools in education\nAn ethicist enables you to delineate the ethical considerations and implications for the use of AI\nA head of school explains how an ethical decision-making process can enable you to develop an actual school policy\n\nThis session helps build your awareness of the ethical issues raised by AI use in schools and empowers you to ask questions in order to make well-informed and ethical policies for the adults and students in your school communities. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \nView the recording for Part 2 on the topic: Artificial Intelligence in Schools: Allow or Prohibit? SUMMARY:Put More “M” in Preschool STEM: Purposeful Integration of Mathematics in Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Brian Mowry\, Author\, Director of Content for Professional Learning\, Frog Street\nModerated by Jody Martin\, Senior Developmental Editor\, Frog Street \nSponsored by Frog Street \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nView this edWebinar to learn strategies to enhance children’s mathematical learning as it occurs authentically during teacher-guided instruction and child-initiated exploration and play focusing on the big ideas of science\, technology\, and engineering. The presenter discusses how the knowledge and skills children enact during STEM occur within five content domains defined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) as algebra\, numeracy\, measurement\, geometry\, and data analysis. \nFor example\, children encounter algebra as they engage in repeated reasoning to make sense of patterns and structures. Numeracy and measurement intersect when children count nonstandard units (e.g.\, cubes\, blocks) to fit and align along the length or height of various straight-line segments (e.g.\, along the edge of a board). Children also incorporate sorting and graphing to categorize by like attributes. Finally\, formal geometry begins when children problem solve to figure out where and how objects move in space\, discover relationships between the number and length of line segments (e.g.\, shape)\, and visualize how a shape’s orientation changes in space. \nView this session to explore opportunities to connect mathematics into science\, technology\, and engineering. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to preschool teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Brian Mowry serves as the Director of Content for Professional Learning at Frog Street and is the senior author of the Frog Street Pre-K Mathematics Program. SUMMARY:The Key Role of Educators in the Emerging Field of Children’s Racial Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Andrew Grant-Thomas\, Ph.D.\, Co-Founder and Co-Director\, EmbraceRace; Debbie LeeKeenan\, Social Justice Educator\, Lecturer\, Consultant\, and Author; and Christina Rucinski\, Ph.D.\, Research-to-Practice Program Manager\, EmbraceRace\nModerated by Melissa Giraud\, Co-Founder and Co-Director\, EmbraceRace \nSponsored by EmbraceRace \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThe headlines tell us that in recent years our schools have become a battleground over whether and how to teach our children about race and racism. In EmbraceRace’s recent Reflections report\, they begin to chronicle the counter-narrative\, highlighting the emergence of a multi-sectoral field of learning and practice centered on children’s racial learning. The Reflections report provides insights from leading experts in education\, parenting\, children’s media\, healthcare\, and social science research on the critical work being done in this emerging field\, and on what more can be done to teach children about race in healthy\, affirming ways. \nDuring this edWebinar\, you learn about why effective guidance and modeling from adults is necessary to help kids overcome the odds of developing racial biases and anxieties and be more prepared to act in ways that help dismantle structural racism. The presenters invite educators to consider how they can join the diverse and growing group of educators\, parents\, media professionals\, healthcare providers\, and others who are planting the seeds of healthy racial learning for children across America. In addition\, they share ideas and resources for educators who are motivated to help build the field of children’s racial learning. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \n\n\nAbout the Presenters \nAs Co-founder and Co-director\, Andrew Grant-Thomas\, Ph.D. (he/him) leads efforts to support parents\, educators\, and other caregivers to raise children who are thoughtful\, informed\, and brave about race. Dr. Grant-Thomas is a dad to Lola and Lena\, a partner to Melissa\, an only child\, a long-time racial justice guy\, and a Black man of Jamaican origins in the United States\, born on the 4th of July. His main commitments are to promoting racial and social justice and he is grateful to have worked with or otherwise had his thinking shaped by such brilliant\, fierce advocates as Michelle Alexander\, Cathy Cohen\, Angela Davis\, Christopher Edley\, Gary Orfield\, bell hooks\, and john powell. In stops that include the Harvard Civil Rights Project\, the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity\, and the Proteus Fund\, he has worked on issues from mass incarceration to PK-12 educational segregation\, immigration to death penalty abolition\, and race and redistricting to structural racialization. Through it all\, and now at EmbraceRace\, he champions efforts he believes can make a meaningful difference for real people and communities—not 100 years from now\, but in his lifetime and the lifetimes of his two tween children. Dr. Grant-Thomas earned his BA in literature from Yale University\, his MA in international relations from the University of Chicago\, and his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago. \nDebbie LeeKeenan is a long-time social justice educator\, lecturer\, consultant\, and author. She has been in the field of early education for over 50 years. She is a former preschool\, special education\, and elementary school teacher. She was director of the Eliot-Pearson Children’s School at Tufts University from 1996 to 2013. She has been a member of the early childhood faculty at Tufts University\, Lesley University\, and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Debbie is a producer of the award-winning film\, Reflecting on Anti-bias Education in Action: The Early Years\, released in April 2021. Her work has been published in numerous journals and books\, including Young Children\, Exchange\, and Theory into Practice. Her most recent co-authored books include: From Survive to Thrive: A Director’s Guide for Leading an Early Childhood Program and Leading Anti-bias Early Childhood Programs: A Guide for Change. Debbie was awarded the 2022 National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Asian Interest Forum Leadership Award for demonstrating professional excellence\, integrity\, and social responsibility to better the lives of many children\, families\, the ECE workforce of Asian descent\, and the ECE field as a whole. Debbie is Chinese-American\, the child of immigrant working-class parents\, and is part of a multi-racial family. \n\nChristina Rucinski\, Ph.D. (she/her) is a White former educator and academic\, serving as the Research-to-Practice Program Manager at EmbraceRace. In this role\, she translates insights from scientific research to inform caregiver and educator practices to support healthy racial learning in young children. Dr. Rucinski has worked with children for most of her life\, including as an early childhood educator and in collaboration with the content research team at Sesame Workshop. She holds a Ph.D. and MA in applied developmental psychology from Fordham University and a BS in psychology from Tufts University. As a developmental scientist\, she has conducted research on children’s social-emotional learning\, classroom racial and ethnic diversity\, and teacher-student relationships across racial lines. She brings this evidence-based lens to her work with EmbraceRace\, in translating from research to practice and back again. Outside work\, Dr. Rucinski is often watching and reading sci-fi\, collaging\, and birding with her partner. \n  \n\n \nAbout the Moderator \nMelissa Giraud (she/her) is co-founder and co-director of EmbraceRace. She has spent a lifetime trying to center the voices\, experiences and concerns of children and families\, with a particular interest in immigrant kids of color and first-generation children. She is the multiracial (Black/White) daughter of immigrants from Dominica and Quebec. Professionally\, Melissa has sought to empower marginalized kids and families\, first as an elementary school educator teaching in a bilingual (Spanish/English) program in a predominantly Mexican and Mexican American neighborhood in Chicago\, then as an NPR producer in DC driven to recruit voices and perspectives from communities of color in the newsroom\, and later as a radio reporter who collaborated with her former elementary students as they were coming of age to capture the experience of living biculturally and transnationally for NPR. Melissa earned a BA in history from the University of Chicago and an MA in education from The Ohio State University. \n\n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nFounded in 2016\, EmbraceRace organizes and creates the resources\, programs\, and communities parents\, educators and other adults need to raise children who are thoughtful\, informed\, and brave about race so that multiracial democracy in the U.S. can thrive. There is a growing body of research and evidence that makes clear that children’s racial sensibilities begin to form in infancy\, that almost all children develop racial and other biases by kindergarten\, and that those biases become fairly entrenched by adolescence. And yet\, most national organizations dedicated to children’s racial learning direct their resources mainly to middle and high school educators. There are too few resources for younger children available for parents\, grandparents\, or other caregivers or for early and elementary childhood educators. EmbraceRace helps fill that gap.

SUMMARY:Mindsets Leadership Series: Upskilling Teachers for Today and Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ana Arce-Gonzalez\, Ph.D.\, Principal\, South Grade Elementary School (FL); Ben Lusk\, Gifted and Talented Coordinator\, Beechwood Independent Schools (KY); Amanda Rather\, Assistant Director of Special Education\, Bryant School District (AR); and David Samore\, Ed.D.\, CEO\, David Samore & Associates\, LLC \nSponsored by Mindsets Learning \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThe professional educator of today faces both opportunities and crises on a daily basis. Many teachers who find their career paths in the K-12 classroom in U.S. schools are often those who set out to make a living in a different field than that of the educator: their advanced degree is in something other than education. In a real way\, schools have been forced to become “colleges of education” where teachers must learn the basic skills of teaching children along with the nuanced skills of increasing the performance of those students—on the job. \nWhat are the current strategies to address the professional development of teachers so they are fully prepared for success? How are schools and school systems adapting to today’s realities to address upskilling teachers? What approaches are working now to provide teachers with the skills for an unknown future? In what concrete ways is school leadership preparing teachers for 2024 to ensure their retention? This session delivers a lively and provocative conversation about “flying a plane while you train the crew.” \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 school and district leaders as well as teachers. \nThis edWebinar is part two in a three-part series on leadership. View part one\, Mindsets Leadership Series: The Hard Truth About Thought Leadership in Action. Stay tuned for details on part three (March 29th). SUMMARY:Teach Reading Comprehension with Explicit\, Whole-Class Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kristina Smekens\, President\, Lead Consultant\, Smekens Education\nModerated by Monica Myers\, Playbook Pro Remote Coach\, Smekens Education \nSponsored by Smekens Education \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nLanguage arts classrooms often read texts\, ask questions about texts\, and engage kids in text-based discussions. As important as these experiences are\, none of them count as explicit teaching or direct instruction. \nBefore asking students to dive into discussions about texts\, teachers need to do the heavy lifting by delivering focused mini-lessons on specific comprehension skills. This is the first step in gradual release—I do; you watch and listen. The teacher must explain which text details are relevant for a particular comprehension skill. The teacher must model how to put thoughts together via think alouds. The teacher must demonstrate the inference process—all without the help of the children. \nIn this edWebinar\, author and literacy consultant Kristina Smekens breaks down the architecture of every 15-minute whole-class mini-lesson. She provides practical\, ready-to-use strategies for planning and delivering K-12 comprehension instruction daily in four-step mini-lessons. Viewers learn: \n\nThe number of minutes and key information to reveal per step\nHow to progress through the phases of gradual release (i.e.\, I do\, We do\, You do) within the lesson\nHow to plan a think aloud before executing it in the lesson\nHow to present engaging comprehension lessons that “edutain”—educate and entertain\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nKristina Smekens has built a reputation for using enthusiasm\, humor\, and common sense to equip K-12 educators with practical\, demystifying strategies for teaching reading and writing. As President and Lead Consultant for Smekens Education\, she is a leader in developing new strategies to help teachers meet the demands of today’s College- and Career-Ready Standards. She and her associates share those strategies with teachers around the globe through on-site professional development\, virtual and in-person seminars\, and an always-growing pool of print\, digital\, and video resources. Kristina has authored more than 50 books\, guides\, and classroom tools designed to help teachers implement best-practice literacy strategies. The Comprehension Playbook; Launching the Writer’s Workshop: Grades K-2; and Launching the Writer’s Workshop: Grades 3-12 are among the most popular titles. \n\nAbout the Moderator \nMonica Myers is an enthusiastic advocate of best-practice instruction in reading comprehension. SUMMARY:Targeting ELA Learning Gaps with Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Karrie Berglund\, Director of Education\, Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc.; Diana Yoder\, Education Specialist\, Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc.; and Dave Cuomo\, Education Specialist\, Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc. \nSponsored by Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc. \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nPandemic learning disruptions had a significant impact on our students\, especially in the areas of mathematics and English language arts (ELA). ELA is broadly defined as speaking\, listening\, reading\, and writing\, all of which are foundational skills for a successful academic career. \nEstimates are that elementary students lost about one-quarter of a year in ELA skills due to pandemic restrictions\, and the effects on low-income students were even greater. How can schools help students regain this ground? The first step is to fully engage students in their learning by offering exciting and impactful learning opportunities. \nIn this edWebinar\, we explore how the innately inspiring and engaging subject of astronomy can be used to target ELA. We share ideas for addressing ELA skills\, such as: \n\nReading stories under the stars to young students\, then discussing those stories to gauge comprehension\nSharing constellation legends from around the world\nHaving students write and present their own star stories\nUsing astronomical images to inspire student-created poetry\n\nAlthough the presenters focus on presenting in a planetarium dome\, many of the activities shared can be done successfully in a standard classroom. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nKarrie Berglund is the Director of Education at and co-founder of Digitalis Education Solutions\, Inc.\, a company that has manufactured and sold digital planetarium systems worldwide since 2003. Prior to Digitalis\, Karrie worked at Seattle’s Pacific Science Center\, teaching in the on-site planetarium\, as well as at schools all over Washington state. Karrie enjoys teaching and learning science of all kinds\, but she is especially fond of astronomy. She considers planetariums to be the world’s best classrooms and dreams of a day when all students have access to such an inspiring\, mind-opening tool. \n\n \nDiana Yoder is an Education Specialist with Digitalis Education Solutions. She studied physics and astronomy at Mississippi State University and Clemson University\, earning her master’s in 2016. Since then\, she has enjoyed an exciting career in planetariums. Starting out at the South Carolina State Museum\, and later moving on to the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery\, she has led all sorts of public and school programs for a variety of subjects in and out of the dome. Her favorite part of working at the museums was that every day was something new and the teams were constantly looking for creative solutions to educate their audience best. In 2022\, she joined the Digitalis team. When she isn’t spreading the word about how useful planetariums can be\, she enjoys working on new\, standards-based lessons to share with the community. \n\n \nDave Cuomo joined Digitalis Education Solutions as an Education Specialist in April 2019. Before joining Digitalis\, he worked as the Supervisor of Pacific Science Center’s Willard Smith Planetarium in Seattle\, Washington and as Coordinator of Space Odyssey at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in Denver\, Colorado. Dave started working as an informal science educator in 2003. Since that time\, he has dissected hundreds of sheep hearts\, conducted vacuum chamber experiments on numerous marshmallow astronauts\, and inspired curiosity in thousands of people of all ages. \nDave is passionate about live planetarium programming. At the Willard Smith Planetarium\, he created a schedule that consisted of six live presentations every day. He researched and wrote live presentations about Chinese astronomy\, the physics of light\, planetary science\, climate change\, and Earth science. Dave holds a BA in world history from the Metropolitan State University of Denver\, with a minor in theatre. \n  \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Accelerate Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nDigitalis staff are science education experts and technologists. We develop our own simulation and interface software\, and all of our sales staff have taught in planetariums. We understand science educator needs\, and we use our own products to present programs to ensure they will meet your requirements.
