SUMMARY:The Knowledge Gap: How It Affects Reading Performance and How to Fix It
DESCRIPTION:Presented by John Carroll\, GM\, K12 Curriculum Services; and Natalie Wexler\, Consultant and Author \nSponsored by XanEdu\, a Scholarus Learning Company \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nOur students’ performance on the whole on national reading tests has not improved over the past two decades (NAEP\, 2023). More troubling\, the gap in scores between socioeconomic groups has remained stubbornly wide. \nRecent reform efforts have focused on improving instruction in phonics and other foundational skills. That’s crucial\, but the evidence indicates it’s not enough. We also need to change our approach to reading comprehension to take account of a key factor that has long been overlooked: knowledge. \nSome students are better able to acquire knowledge of the world outside of school beginning at birth\, enabling them to read more complex text. Others rely on school for that kind of knowledge. If they don’t start acquiring it early\, the gap between “good” and “poor” readers only grows wider as grades go up. \nView this edWebinar to hear Natalie Wexler\, education journalist and author of The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America’s Broken Education System—and How to Fix It\, share the research along with her insights and perspectives on how we can give all students access to the kind of knowledge that enables reading comprehension—and learning in general. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders and is part of the Leading by Design: 6 Initiatives You Can’t Afford to Get Wrong district leadership series where you learn from leaders who are pulling together the elements of successful schooling. \n\n \nAbout the Presenters \nJohn Carroll joined XanEdu\, now a part of the Scholarus Learning group of companies\, as the GM\, K12 Curriculum Services. In his role\, John is responsible for the strategic vision and implementation of XanEdu’s K-12 product roadmap and its content/curriculum vision. John has over 15 years of edtech experience in the K-12 school market including product management\, marketing\, and strategy roles at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt\, McGraw Hill Education\, Pearson School\, and Scholastic. John holds a BA in economics from Tufts University and an MBA from Northeastern University. \n \nNatalie Wexler is an education writer and the author of The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America’s Broken Education System—and How to Fix It (Avery\, 2019). She is also the co-author\, with Judith C. Hochman\, of The Writing Revolution: A Guide to Advancing Thinking Through Writing in All Subjects and Grades (Jossey-Bass\, 2017)\, and the host of Reading Comprehension Revisited\, a six-episode series for the Knowledge Matters Podcast. Her articles and essays have appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, The American Scholar\, and other publications. She a senior contributor to Forbes.com\, and she has a free Substack newsletter called Minding the Gap. Natalie lives in Washington\, D.C. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Leadership Practices for Innovative Leaders community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nInnovative solutions that drive student success \nXanEdu offers customized content solutions and professional services for K-12 and higher education. But where do you start? \nJoin Seewan Eng and Argos Gonzalez from Mindful Schools in conversation with Dr. Cicely Warren\, Assistant Superintendent of the Paterson Public Schools (PPS)\, as they discuss successful strategies to build resilient school communities. Mindful Schools has partnered with PPS on a multi-year strategy to integrate mindfulness into the district’s culture and SEL programming. Drawing on experience in PPS and hundreds of other schools\, we share tips on adapting mindfulness practices to your specific school and district. Argos first learned about mindfulness when he was searching for practices to support his high school students and the pre-service and inservice teachers he guided at Hunter College\, CUNY – a role he continues to play today. Argos joined Mindful Schools in 2014 and currently serves as Head of Instruction\, where his experience as an educational leader helps him shepherd the internal learning journey and shapes program delivery. Argos recognizes the power of love as a radical tool for personal and community change and shares mindfulness to foster healing and transformation\, especially for communities most impacted by systems of oppression. Argos immigrated from Venezuela as a boy\, grew up in Queens\, and lives in New York City. \n\n\n \nDr. Cicely Warren is an educator who loves to learn. Her experience as a student in public and independent schools in NYC provided a unique understanding of the importance of access to resources and instruction in shaping student experience and outcomes. Dr. Warren’s experience as an undergraduate at Wesleyan University solidified her commitment to public service and validated her belief that education is a pathway to opportunity. After joining Paterson Public Schools as a Teach for America corps member in 1995\, she has served as a teacher\, vice principal\, and principal\, and was appointed Assistant Superintendent of School Operations in 2015. Dr. Warren is known for her ability to bring diverse perspectives to the table and promote student-centered\, equity-focused practices at all levels of operations. In addition to supervising schools serving grades PreK-12\, she leads equity and inclusion efforts for PPS with partners such as Mindful Schools. \n \nSeewan Eng is passionate about empowering educators and building cultures and systems that sustain resilience\, compassion\, liberation\, and justice in schools. She believes that mindfulness was a missing piece during her nine years as a middle school teacher\, and that having a personal practice would have empowered her to foster a braver and more loving classroom community where all students were thriving. Seewan has led teams bridging research to practice at WestEd and supporting assets-based coaching and professional development models at New Teacher Center. Today as Executive Director of Mindful Schools\, she is honored to be creating conditions for educator well-being and a more sustainable\, thriving school culture. She received a B.A. from Brown\, an Ed.M. from Harvard\, National Board Certification\, and is a 2023 Pahara Fellow. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Mental Health and Wellness community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nMindful Schools has trained over 70\,000 educators and currently works in 500 schools across the country\, where we are helping school communities become the best version of themselves. We guide educators to practice\, apply\, and embody mindfulness in their day-to-day interactions so they can nurture social and emotional well-being\, strengthen relationships\, and help all students thrive. \nMindfulness is a simple\, accessible\, and profound entry point for addressing the disconnect between what overwhelmed educators know and what they have capacity to do. Through our courses\, curriculum\, and consulting work\, we support school leaders to make a lasting change. Together\, educators learn to manage stress\, become aware of and address bias\, create trauma-sensitive classrooms\, and cultivate resilient communities of belonging\, inclusion\, and well-being.

SUMMARY:Let’s Explore Effect Size with John Hattie: How We Impact Schools with Researched Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Presented by John Hattie\, Professor\, Melbourne Graduate School of Education; Brendan Scribner\, Director of Implementation and Success\, Exemplars; and Jay Meadows\, CEO\, Exemplars \nSponsored by Exemplars \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \n“Featuring special guest speaker John Hattie.” \nEducators are managing challenging workloads and are susceptible to high rates of burnout. Join us as we examine practices that have a positive impact in schools. Professor John Hattie helps us lean into extensive research around how to de-implement practices that just aren’t effective\, and replace them with cost-effective\, high-yield moves to transform your classroom\, school\, and district. This edWebinar explores the following questions: \n\nWhat is effect size? How can effect size shape pedagogy?\nResearch suggests that the process of schooling is often overengineered. How does that give us permission to dial back\, carefully?\nWhat are some steps in the process for deciding which initiatives are most effective—and how do we let go of the ones that are not?\nHow can we offer useful tools\, templates\, and charts that educators can immediately use with de-implementation work at school\, in teaching teams\, or at the system level that improve student learning?\nIf you were starting a new school\, what practices would you suggest they lean into?\n\nThis edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nProfessor John Hattie of the University of Melbourne\, Australia\, has long researched performance indicators and evaluation in education. His research\, Visible Learning\, is the culmination of more than 25 years of examining and synthesizing more than 2\,100 meta-analyses comprising more than 132\,000 studies involving 300 million students around the world. \nProfessor Hattie wanted to understand which variables were the most important. Although “almost everything we do improves learning\,” why not prioritize the ones that will have the greatest effect?
