SUMMARY:Measuring Success: Defining Quality Education for Multilingual Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. José Viana\, Senior Education Advisor\, Lexia Learning; Breanna Guzman\, Senior Language Product Specialist\, Lexia Learning; Dr. Linda Cavazos\, Executive Director\, ELLAS Consulting (English Learner Leadership Advocacy Support); and Martha Hernandez\, Executive Director\, Californians Together\nModerated by Cassandra Wheeler\, Director of Lexia LETRS® State Success\, Lexia Learning \nSponsored by Lexia Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nEmergent bilingual students need different academic supports and structures than their monolingual peers\, and many educators have to rely on instructional models designed for students who already speak English—leading to a disconnect for our ELL students. Ensuring all emergent bilingual and multilingual students have access to a quality education first requires defining what that education looks like. \nLexia Learning’s Cassandra Wheeler (Director of LETRS State Success) and Breanna Guzman (Senior Language Product Specialist) with Dr. Linda Cavazos (Executive Director of ELLAS Consulting) and Martha Hernandez (Executive Director of Californians Together) broke down what a quality education for emergent bilinguals looks like\, diving deeper into how second languages are learned\, where and how that learning occurs\, and how teachers themselves learn and develop as expert professionals. \nIn this session\, viewers gain understanding of the value oral discourse brings to literacy learning\, how to implement effective ELD practices across districts\, schools\, and classrooms\, and useful resources for creating language frames on a practical level. \nThis recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, ELL and ESOL specialists\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \nThis edLeader Panel is part of Emergent Bilingual Week: A New Era in Multilingualism. \nThis five-day event\, October 23rd – 27th was designed to inspire educators and leaders in service of our 5 million+ multilingual students across the country. SUMMARY:Redesigning Teacher Evaluation Systems
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Michael Hinojosa\, Former Superintendent\, Dallas Independent School District (TX) and Cobb County School District (GA)\, and Current Chief Impact Officer\, engage2learn; and Dr. Chris Everett\, Chief Strategy Officer\, engage2learn \nSponsored by GroweLab powered by engage2learn \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIn times of increasing complexity and educator overwhelm\, one opportunity for school and district leaders to reduce teacher stress is by rethinking teacher evaluation systems. Rather than focusing on compliance-driven teacher evaluation scores as indicators of performance\, leaders can instead focus on individualized growth in relevant\, role-specific competencies over time. Leaders can then utilize that growth data to measure each educator’s impact and provide positive recognition to celebrate individual efforts. This would provide leaders with the necessary data point to effectively connect adult growth to student growth\, which is a much more robust indicator of success. \nIn engage2learn’s experience of providing direct teacher support for over a decade\, they have seen through measurable results that effective educator support leads to increased levels of job satisfaction and retention. As an added benefit\, this support organically improves teacher evaluation scores\, killing two birds with one stone! \nIn this edWebinar\, the presenters share how to redesign teacher evaluation systems and transform educator support\, effectiveness\, and retention. They also discuss redirecting the focus from teacher evaluation scores to research-backed growth data. Viewers gain actionable\, evidence-based solutions for customizing teacher evaluations and integrating growth data into decision making and recognition. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 school and district leaders\, instructional coaches\, math\, reading\, and science coaches\, staff development specialists\, directors of professional development\, and teachers. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Michael Hinojosa served more than 27 years as a superintendent/CEO of six public education systems\, including two of the 25 largest school systems in America: Dallas ISD in Texas and the Cobb County School District in Georgia.
