Kalyani uses sport\, life skills education\, and leadership development to empower adolescent girls and young women to access their rights and achieve their potential. Meenu supports poor women to gain “livelihoods with dignity” by creating safe employment options for women professional drivers. \nKalyani and Meenu join Zoë Timms\, WEP’s Founder and Executive Director\, in a discussion of their personal journeys building organizations working towards gender equality. Young women of each organization also join to share stories of their own. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to high school teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, education technology leaders\, adult learners\, and anyone interested in learning about inspiring global projects promoting gender equality. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nZoë Timms\, Founder and Executive Director of Women’s Education Project\, first went to Hyderabad\, India in 1996 as a student of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Year-in-India Program. There\, she was introduced to educational\, grassroots NGOs\, helping former girl child laborers study for the first time. Later\, in 2001-2004\, directing the Wisconsin program in Madurai\, Tamil Nadu\, Zoë worked with a young woman whose dream to obtain an MBA and enter a career in finance was blocked by serious family illness and debt. Zoë realized there were countless ambitious young women in similar circumstances. She thought about the obstacles they faced and the steps it would take to remove them. The idea of creating a center where young women could meet\, develop skills\, focus their ambitions\, and expand their awareness of life’s possibilities was born. WEP’s first center opened in Madurai in 2002. This was followed by Hyderabad in 2007 and Kadapa in 2012. In 2016\, WEP-India was established in Bangalore with its own board and in-country director. Zoë was awarded the University of Wisconsin’s Forward Under 40 Award and Dana Hall School’s Distinguished Alumna Award. \n \nKalyani Subramanyam\, CEO at the Maitrayana Charity Foundation\, has 25 years of experience working on issues of HIV and sexuality. Prior to her work in Maitrayana\, she worked for 18 years at The Naz Foundation (India) Trust. As a strong advocate for women’s rights\, she has been responsible for the development of the Young People’s Initiative\, a women’s empowerment initiative that uses sport\, life skills education\, and leadership development to empower adolescent girls and young women to access their rights and achieve their potential. The YPI has reached out to more than 130\,000 girls across the country. \nIn 2017\, Kalyani was honored with the Goal Lifetime Achievement Award for her commitment as a pioneer to providing safe spaces for girls to play and participate in life skills education. Kalyani is a member of UNICEF’s International Safeguarding Children in Sport Advisory Board. Her experience and understanding of women’s empowerment have enabled her to serve as the NGO representative on Standard Chartered Bank and its subsidiaries Internal Committee (IC) for the POSH policy. She is a Vital Voices Lead Fellow and an alumnus of the Dasra Leadership Program.\n \n \nMeenu Vadera is the Founder of Azad Foundation\, a social enterprise that supports resource-poor women to gain “livelihoods with dignity.” Meenu also is the Founder of Sakha Consulting Wings\, a unique social enterprise that creates safe employment options for women professional drivers. For more than 30 years\, Meenu has been a grassroots worker\, trainer\, implementer\, and leader. She has been involved in development initiatives as the Country Director in ActionAid Uganda (1998-2003). In India\, she has also led an innovative initiative of Aagaz Academy-Schools of Leadership for elected women panchayat leaders. She has written and published many articles on women’s rights and has been the recipient of multiple awards including the 2018 International Inspiration Award by IBM iX everywoman in Travel Awards and was featured amongst the Seven Women Changing the World for Good in 2019. Sakha Consulting Wings received an Emerging Social Enterprises recognition in 2018 by the Shared Value Initiative under her leadership. \n \nRecent alumnae from Women’s Education Project’s Leadership Academies will join the panel to discuss their experience at WEP and their paths to careers of their own choosing. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nAt Women’s Education Project (WEP)\, young women ages 15 to 24 attend an experiential\, vision expanding program to gain knowledge\, skills and a broad understanding of their opportunities. As self-reliant and confident leaders\, these young women make positive change for themselves\, their families and communities and informed choices to earn in careers of their own choosing. To do this\, WEP supports NGO partners with an incubator program for female grassroots leaders\, to provide young women in their areas a community-rooted\, locally resourced\, holistic curriculum: the Leadership Academy.

SUMMARY:Getting Older Striving Readers Back on Track: Effective Foundational Skills Instruction for 6-12
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Linda Diamond\, Author and Education Consultant\, Reading Done Right; Vivett Dukes\, Manager of Educational Partnerships\, Collaborative Classroom; and Dr. Katy Cortelyou\, Senior Regional Director\, Collaborative Classroom \nSponsored by Collaborative Classroom \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThe ability to read and understand complex text across content areas is a major predictor of academic success in the upper grades. But for some students\, accessing information—especially through content-specific reading—can be a difficult\, even painful process. This problem can often be traced back to lingering gaps in foundational skills\, such as a lack of automaticity in decoding\, especially in polysyllabic words\, or to a lack of fluency and insufficient vocabulary knowledge. \nHow do we bridge this gap for middle and high schoolers? It is crucial to provide targeted instruction based on clearly determined needs that is respectful\, dignified\, and age appropriate for this vulnerable group. Join this edWebinar for a collaborative discussion about how we can: \n\nIdentify specific skill gaps\nHonor social and emotional needs\nProvide age-appropriate instruction that is targeted and highly interactive\nClose skill gaps while restoring confidence and accelerating reading growth\n\nWhile we know many older striving readers require vocabulary and comprehension support\, the presenters focus on and examine the research related to foundational skills instruction\, discuss efficient ways to identify specific skill gaps\, describe targeted interventions that develop automatic word recognition and fluency\, and review the essential elements of effective instruction. \nThey consider the special circumstances and instructional needs of older readers and share best practices for engagement and respectful\, age-appropriate approaches. Viewers leave with examples and solutions for ensuring equitable learning by helping students master and apply critical reading skills so they can have successful futures. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to middle and high school teachers and school and district leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nLinda Diamond is an author and educational consultant. She has dedicated her career to teaching children to read\, particularly those with word reading difficulties like dyslexia. While she worked for many years in the classroom\, she eventually moved out of the classroom to become a principal\, the director of curriculum and instruction for a K-12 school district in California\, and a senior policy analyst with an emphasis on school-to-career\, charter schools\, and school reform. In these roles\, she realized that in order for students to become strong readers they need teachers who understand the Science of Reading\, can identify which skills students struggle with\, and can provide expert instruction to help students overcome reading difficulties. \nIn 1995\, in response to California’s crisis in reading achievement\, Linda and former California superintendent Bill Honig founded the Consortium on Reaching Excellence in Education (CORE). Today\, CORE works with PreK–12 districts and schools to support excellent instruction in both reading and math. After serving as CORE’s president for 26 years\, she stepped down from that role in 2020 but continues to serve on the advisory board. Linda is the co-author of the textbooks Teaching Reading Sourcebook\, Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures\, and Vocabulary Handbook. \n \nVivett Dukes is Manager of Educational Partnerships for Collaborative Classroom. She is a proud native New Yorker who has been educated from K-16 in public and private learning institutions across Long Island and New York City. She is a New York State certified ELA teacher (7th–12th)\, Literacy Specialist (Birth–12th)\, and Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (Birth–12th). Since 2002\, she has served in classrooms in some capacity\, with students in grades Pre-K through graduate school. Currently\, she serves as an adjunct lecturer to pre-service teachers in the English/Education Leadership Program at S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook. She is an active member of NCTE\, as well as an executive board member of NYSEC. Literacy acquisition is her passion and it is her firm belief that reading and writing are civil and human rights that must be equitably afforded to everyone. \n \nDr. Katy Cortelyou is the Senior Regional Director for Collaborative Classroom. She has worked for over 20 years in Florida schools as a classroom teacher\, literacy coach\, reading interventionist\, and professional developer. Dr. Cortelyou earned her Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Central Florida. Her research efforts focused on the role of teacher knowledge and the teaching of primary-level at-risk readers. She also holds National Board Certification as an Early Childhood Generalist. Dr. Cortelyou is passionate about working alongside educators to deepen professional practices that inspire student learning. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Be a Literacy Hero community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nCollaborative Classroom is a mission-driven\, nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that all students become readers\, writers\, and thinkers who learn from\, care for\, and respect one another. Collaborative Classroom’s evidence-based programs help children develop as proficient readers and writers\, appreciate the ideas and opinions of others\, learn to agree and disagree respectfully\, think critically about big ideas\, and become responsible citizens of the world. Since the organization’s founding in 1980\, our work has reached more than 8 million students and 328\,000 teachers in classrooms across the country\, developing fluent readers and skilled writers\, supporting instructional equity\, transforming discipline practices\, and bolstering student and teacher engagement.
