SUMMARY:Multilingual Learners and the Science of Reading: Building on Common Ground with Dr. Claude Goldenberg
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Claude Goldenberg\, Emeritus Professor of Education\, Stanford University; and Maya Goodall\, Chief Marketing Officer\, CORE Learning \nSponsored by CORE Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nHave you heard the big news? Educators are finding common ground on important issues affecting literacy education for multilingual learners. \nThis edWebinar highlights how this new common-ground perspective can help shape multilingual education policy today. Presented by Dr. Claude Goldenberg\, we use the foundational work laid out in the paper Narrowing Down to Find Common Ground: Shared Agreements for Effective Literacy Instruction in California to take the conversation to the next level by discussing how policy makers should implement policies based on the best research we have for the benefit of multilingual learners. \nHere are the areas where educators are finding common ground: \n\nStudents can learn to read\, write\, and speak in two (or more) languages at the same time. Multilingualism and multiliteracy are assets we should build on.\nFoundational literacy skills\, crucial for first or second language learners\, must be taught explicitly\, systematically\, and cumulatively.\nBeyond foundational skills\, full literacy requires language development\, vocabulary\, knowledge\, and cognitive skills\, all essential for comprehensive literacy growth.\nMultilingual learners need targeted support to develop English literacy and oral proficiency concurrently\, especially if English is a new language for them.\nEarly screening for reading challenges\, with linguistically and culturally appropriate measures\, is key to providing effective instruction and helping mitigate future difficulties.\n\nJoin the conversation on how these agreements should affect evolving educational policies that will impact your teaching\, and gain practical ways to adapt and enhance your approach for your diverse classrooms. This recorded edWebinar is the second part of CORE Learning’s three-part “Structured Literacy and Language Diversity Lunch and Learn Week\,” and is of interest to PreK-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Claude Goldenberg\, Emeritus Professor of Education at Stanford University\, has made significant contributions to the field of language minority education. However\, many of our high school students haven’t become readers or do not see themselves as readers due\, in no small part\, to the books they are required to read\, books of little interest or relevance. This should include multiple reading modes from fiction to nonfiction stories and traditional formats to graphic novels at varying reading levels. \nView this edWebinar with Cicely Lewis\, educator\, author\, and 2020 School Library Journal Librarian of the Year\, Morgan Taylor\, high school English teacher\, instructional coach\, and co-founder of Little Classroom Library\, and Ronell Whitaker\, ELA and LRC Curriculum Director\, to learn more about ways to equip high school educators with the strategies to go beyond the literary canon to incorporate a wide range of texts that represent different experiences\, identities\, and cultures we have in our schools.
