SUMMARY:Closing the Fluency Gap Series - Part 1: What the Science of Learning Says
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jennifer Flieder\, Reading Interventionist\, Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy (IA); and Carolyn Brown\, Ph.D.\, Chief Academic Officer and Co-Founder\, Foundations in Learning\nModerated by Allison Zimmermann\, President and CEO\, Foundations in Learning \nSponsored by WordFlight\, a Foundations in Learning Solution \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIt’s estimated that two-thirds of students in the U.S. are struggling with fluency as a result of insufficient foundational skills. Typically\, fluency has been addressed by defining\, assessing\, and intervening on decoding accuracy\, automatic word recognition\, and reading text with expression. However\, to solve the fluency gap\, we must go beyond this approach to better understand the learning processes that enable students to learn\, retain\, and connect these components. \nThis edWebinar examines fluency from the perspective of the learning process. Learning science provides decades of research on fluency development from many domains. These findings provide critical insights that can be applied to reading\, providing a more effective way to help struggling readers develop the knowledge and skills required for reading fluency. \nIn this edWebinar\, you learn how to support the emergence of fluency\, link the components of fluency\, and learn how automatic word recognition develops and why it is so important to fluency. Join us as we share and answer the following questions: \n\nWhy do we need to get beyond outcome fluency measures of rate\, accuracy\, and prosody?\nHow do we do that?\nHow do we support your students with fluency gaps?\nHow does the science of complex skill development provide insights to solutions?\nWhat innovative solutions are being driven by current research?\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to elementary and middle school teachers\, reading coaches\, literacy coaches\, and school and district leaders. \nClosing the Fluency Gap Series – Part 2: Building the Foundations for Fluency and for Deep Reading \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJennifer Flieder is currently a Reading Interventionist at Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy (middle school) in the Cedar Rapids Community School District\, in Cedar Rapids\, IA. SUMMARY:Unlocking the Science of Reading for High School Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Elena Canaras-Raoul\, 10th Grade English Teacher\, Community High School (NY); Deborah Reck\, Chief Product Officer\, Riveting Results; and Arthur Unobskey\, Ed.D.\, CEO\, Riveting Results \nSponsored by Riveting Results \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nHow can high school English teachers get all of their students–those who are three years ahead and those who are five years behind–to love to read complex literature? \nIn this workshop\, the edWebinar leaders discuss the latest Science of Reading research that argues that adolescents need a differentiated approach to basic skills development\, particularly through fluency practice\, to engage with advanced text. A veteran tenth-grade English teacher describes her approach to fluency practice and how it triggers an emotional connection to text even for her most reluctant readers. \nOnce she has described the progress students make in accessing advanced texts\, the teacher discusses how her students take the next step by debating responses to text-based questions with peers and surfacing misconceptions. \nThe team demonstrates how the Riveting Results app integrates these research-based approaches into one solution. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to high school teachers\, administrators\, and district leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nElena Canaras-Raoul has been a teacher for 20 years\, the last two as a founding teacher at Community High School in Brooklyn\, New York. She has taught reading and writing to students in grades K through six and English to ninth- and tenth-grade students. For the past two years\, she has implemented an innovative approach to fluency practice in her classroom. She gets great joy from creating classroom communities in which students fall in love with reading and become lifelong learners. Elena received her bachelor’s degree from SUNY Plattsburgh and her master’s in literacy from Bank Street Graduate School of Education. \n \nAfter 25 years as a teacher and curriculum developer\, Deborah Reck founded Riveting Results in 2016. She was acting on her belief that every child in the country deserves access to literacy instruction that enables them to read with understanding and insight and write with clarity and power. Riveting Results enables teachers to focus on the vitality of students’ ideas so that they can use that energy to drive high school and postsecondary achievement. As Chief Product Officer\, she has continued to work closely with teachers to improve Riveting Results’ ease of implementation and its effectiveness. \nFrom 2010 to 2015 Deborah led Amplify’s development of its middle school digital ELA program from concept to adoption by the state of California. Prior to her work at Amplify\, Deborah founded and expanded The Writers’ Express into a reading and writing program and professional development organization serving students and teachers throughout the country. \n \nArthur Unobskey\, Ed.D. joined Riveting Results after 30 years as an English teacher\, principal\, and school superintendent. Riveting Results puts tools directly in the hands of teachers so that they can teach all of their students how to read advanced high school texts. He is passionate about providing teachers with the support they need to seamlessly integrate foundational skills training with the study of irresistible\, sophisticated literature. Dr. Unobskey received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his Ed.D. from Boston College. \nJoin the Language and Literacy community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \n\nRiveting Results has the solution high school English teachers need. It has developed\, tested\, and implemented a comprehensive English Language Arts program that enables all students to read and enjoy complex text. Easy-to-use software positions the teacher to integrate differentiated foundational skills practice into the class’s daily study of beautiful literature. Both individual and group activities serve as formative assessments to provide teachers with the data they need to intervene before students become frustrated. Riveting Results students improve their scores on national standardized assessments at three times the rate of the national average.

SUMMARY:Executive Function: A Practical Guide to Teaching Planning and Time Management
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Renaud Boisjoly\, Chief Product Officer\, Studyo \nSponsored by Studyo \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nStudents with special challenges are often taught organization and time-management skills\, but research indicates that every student can strongly benefit from learning these skills early on. This edWebinar focuses on how learning to plan helps students build a metacognitive view of their workload\, and how students with strong metacognitive skills are positioned to learn more and perform better (e.g.\, Wang et al.\, 1990). \nDuring this edWebinar\, we explore simple and effective ways educators can integrate planning skills in their curriculum and how this can help students be more aware of their workload and improve their time-management skills. Examples shown tie into executive function skills such as organization\, planning\, shifting\, and initiating. At the end of the session\, viewers have a clear set of strategies they can use in class to help students improve their metacognitive skills and foster improved executive function skills. Additionally\, viewers receive a series of digital lesson plans to teach planning techniques to their students in effective 15-minute sessions they can use at their convenience. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to middle and high school teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, education technology leaders\, counselors\, and learning specialists. \n \n \nAbout the Presenter \nRenaud Boisjoly is the Chief Product Officer at Studyo. After working with students and teachers in classrooms\, schools\, and districts for close to 25 years\, focusing on driving technology adoption through pedagogical objectives\, the new digital era raised the question of student agency and responsibility. Basing himself on action research on brain development and executive function skills\, he built the first version of the Studyo planner which empowered students with tools to plan and break down their work. Now\, Studyo also produces Today and Today for Schools to make these planning tools available to a wider audience\, from individual students or teachers to schools looking for ways to enhance Google Classroom to teach executive function skills to their students. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the The Brain and Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, and receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars. \n\n \nStudyo helps students\, teachers and parents work together to improve executive function skills.
