SUMMARY:Creativity in and Out of the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dan Hunter\, author of Learning and Teaching Creativity; Dr. Rex Jung\, President\, Brain and Behavioral Associates\, and Professor\, University of New Mexico; and Hathalee Higgs\, Partner + Co-founder\, Hunter Higgs\nModerated by Michael Campbell\, President\, Advancing Global EDU \nSponsored by H-IQ \nWatch the RecordingListen to the PodcastRead the Article \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nHow do we prepare students for jobs that don’t yet exist using technology that hasn’t been invented? In a world where change is constant\, rapid\, and unpredictable\, the most important skill we can teach students is effective imagination to enable them to adapt to the unexpected. The future requires the imagination that leads to creativity—the one 21st century skill no one teaches. \nThe debate on teaching creativity focuses on what the schools—teachers and administrators—need to do. However\, students do not learn creativity by watching and listening. They learn by generating their own ideas and then exploring those ideas through trial and error. Teaching creativity is like teaching how to ride a bike—you can describe it or guide it\, but eventually\, each individual must learn to ride on their own. Join this edLeader Panel with Dan Hunter\, author of Learning and Teaching Creativity\, Dr. Rex Jung\, neuropsychologist and brain researcher\, and Hathalee Higgs\, partner and co-founder of Hunter Higgs\, to explore creativity including: \n\nHow to generate ideas\nHow to design assignments to improve imagination\nHow to measure creative progress\nHow to improve your own imagination\n\nThis recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to middle and high school teachers\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and gifted and talented program leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDan Hunter is a playwright\, songwriter\, teacher\, and founding partner of Hunter Higgs\, LLC. SUMMARY:Nature-Based Emergent Curriculum: The Power of Place for Planning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rachel Larimore\, Ph.D.\, Chief Visionary\, Samara Early Learning\nModerated by Dr. Laura Wilhelm\, Vice President for Professional Learning\, Kaplan Early Learning Company \nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning Company \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nEarly education program leaders around the world are becoming more enthusiastic about nature-based learning. Many educators find themselves wanting to jump in wholeheartedly. Yet\, it’s not always clear where to start or what even counts as “nature.” When planning\, we can consider how we bring nature inside\, how we accomplish curricular goals outside\, and how we connect children’s learning across the three spaces of the Inside\, Outside\, and Beyond. \nThis edWebinar first explores the fundamental principles of the nature-based approach. Then\, Dr. Rachel Larimore explores how we can live these principles in day-to-day teaching practices—especially if the goal is an emergent curriculum rooted in play and children’s interests. By focusing on the seasonal events that occur in our local place in the world\, we can intentionally integrate nature into teaching practice—no matter our current situation. This session addresses the theory and specific strategies related to: \n\nIdentifying predictable natural and cultural events from year to year\nPreparing the physical environment to facilitate nature play\nMaking more intentional connections between outdoor and indoor learning\nPreparing teacher-led activities that build off of children’s experiences and interests\n\nViewers leave this edWebinar with tangible ideas that can be implemented the next day as well as some ideas that can be worked toward into the future. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-3 teachers and school leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenter \nRachel A. Larimore\, Ph.D. is an educator\, consultant\, speaker\, researcher\, and author. She has written multiple books including Establishing a Nature-Based Preschool; Preschool Beyond Walls: Blending Early Childhood Education and Nature-Based Learning; and the forthcoming Evaluating Natureness: Measuring the Quality of Nature-Based Classrooms in Pre-K Through 3rd Grade. Dr. Larimore is the founder and Chief Visionary of Samara Early Learning\, an organization focused on helping early childhood educators start nature-based schools or add nature-based approaches into their existing programs. Prior to founding Samara\, she spent more than a decade starting and directing one of the first nature-based preschools in the United States. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nAs the Vice President for Professional Learning at Kaplan\, Laura Wilhelm\, Ed.D. draws on decades of experience teaching young children and early childhood professionals\, starting with toddlers in the 1980s\, followed by PreK-third grade in urban and suburban schools\, and as a university lab school director.
