SUMMARY:Family Engagement Unlocks the Power of Your MTSS Framework: 5 Fall Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kate Pechacek\, K12 Strategic Advisor\, TalkingPoints\nModerated by Heather Dooley\, Senior Director of Brand Marketing and Communications\, TalkingPoints \nSponsored by TalkingPoints \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThis edWebinar is the first in a three-part series about a groundbreaking approach that deploys family engagement as an effective intervention itself within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports\, rather than treating family engagement as a pillar within the framework. Family engagement is twice as likely to predict student success as a family’s socioeconomic status (Mapp & Henderson\, 2002). District leaders learn how to unlock significant student outcome gains by applying family engagement as a high-leverage strategy rather than a stand-alone initiative. \nThe summer months provide a powerful opportunity to establish strong foundations for the upcoming school year by building the trusting relationships with families that are essential to support improved outcomes. Effective family engagement is needed now more than ever to address the persistent challenges schools are facing—teacher recruitment and retention\, improved attendance\, and the well-being of students\, staff\, and families\, to name a few. \nJoin us to learn how to prepare for your most successful back to school yet by adopting a new paradigm for fundamentally shifting family engagement to be a true student-support strategy. This recorded edWebinar is of particular interest to K-12 district leaders. \nView part two: Strong Tier I Family Engagement to Ensure Student Outcomes: 5 Winter Strategies\nView part three: Strong Tier 2-3 Family Engagement to Ensure Student Outcomes: 5 Spring Strategies \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenter \nKate Pechacek currently serves as K12 Strategic Advisor to systems-improving edtech organizations and school districts\, including TalkingPoints\, and is the founder and CEO of OpendoorsEd. Prior to founding OpendoorsEd\, Kate served as Head of Impact at TalkingPoints\, one of several roles she has held in education technology over the last nine years. She began her nearly 30-year career in education as a secondary math teacher. In addition to 15 years as a teacher\, Kate has served in districts nationwide\, holding multiple site and district leadership roles in curriculum\, instruction\, assessment\, and MTSS. She is passionate about ensuring equity\, disrupting predictability\, and narrowing opportunity gaps. \n\n \nAbout the Moderator \nHeather Dooley serves as TalkingPoints’ Senior Director of Brand Marketing and Communications. She is inspired by how education can empower students to reach their potential and help build productive healthy communities. As a public school parent in a diverse district\, she’s seen how fostering positive connections between schools and families can make a big difference in student learning and the important role that access and inclusion play in building these relationships. Heather has spent most of her career in digital marketing\, including nearly a decade working in the nonprofit education sector to advance the adoption of effective school practices and help parents understand and use education data. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Community & Family Engagement community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nTalkingPoints is an edtech nonprofit dedicated to driving student success by unlocking the power of effective family-school partnerships. TalkingPoints’ Universal Family Engagement platform offers capacity-building guidance\, built-in time-saving tools\, and universally accessible two-way communication in over 150 languages. SUMMARY:Improving Attendance: Levers Within Your District’s Locus of Control
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Jodi Nocero\, Director\, Pupil Services\, Oxnard School District (CA); Tara Ramirez\, Manager of Federal and State Grants\, Oxnard School District (CA); Dr. Kelvin Roldán\, Deputy Commissioner for System Transformation\, Rhode Island Department of Education; and Douglas Coulter\, Director of Data Science\, Panorama Education\nModerated by Meagan Naboulsi\, Account Manager\, Panorama Education \nSponsored by Panorama Education \nWatch the RecordingListen to the PodcastRead the Article \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nPost-pandemic rates of absenteeism have roughly doubled—leaving districts seeking effective absenteeism interventions. But before interventions can be effective\, districts need to understand the why behind student absences\, and which factors they can best impact. With data and strategies directed at sense of belonging and teacher-student relationships\, districts can make school stick for every student. \nNew research from Panorama has studied 1.7 million students across 40+ states. The research estimates that around 20% of a student’s probability to be chronically absent is impacted by the school they attend—even when controlling for student characteristics\, learning needs\, and school poverty level. This promising statistic means that district leaders have levers in their locus of control to improve school climate and improve attendance. \nView this engaging edLeader Panel to hear from district leaders about how they: \n\nCapture and track data to understand which students need attendance support\nImplement Tier 1 practices to grow sense of belonging for all students\nIntegrate strategies in every classroom through effective staff training\n\nPlus\, the panelists share free toolkits\, blogs\, and other resources to get you started! SUMMARY:Spelling and Grammar: Bringing Meaningful and Fun Instruction Into Your Writing Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lucy Calkins\, Robinson Professor of Literacy at Teachers College\, Columbia University\, Founding Director at The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower\, and Senior Author of Units of Study in Writing\, Reading\, and Phonics; Katy Wischow\, Staff Developer\, The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower; and Kara Arnold\, Staff Developer\, The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower \nSponsored by The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIt can be challenging to teach grammar and spelling in ways that are fascinating and long lasting but don’t consume all the time in your day. So many of us have tried program after program\, approach after approach\, learning new strategies without feeling confident that we’ve put together a full\, workable system to serve kids’ needs. \nIn this edWebinar\, you hear about a few specific approaches to grammar instruction based on the latest research and refined by classroom observations. You come away with a handful of replicable\, fun\, low-prep ways to teach any grammar skill\, and you learn strategies to help kids transfer this instruction into all their writing\, all day long. Katy Wischow\, a co-author of the grammar extensions for the new Units of Study in Writing\, also takes you through an example of breaking down the state standards into meaningful instruction to support all writing. \nYou then learn about some of the most important ideas to consider when teaching spelling. Kara Arnold\, author of a brand-new set of spelling modules to support upper-elementary writers\, helps you think through assessing spelling in logical and manageable ways\, and then demonstrate the kinds of streamlined spelling instruction you might employ to help your students. You learn about a progression for teaching spelling as well as an armload of methods to teach common spelling generalizations. \nYou leave this session with a set of practical\, classroom-tested tools to use immediately! This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Lucy Calkins is the Founding Director of The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower. She’s been on the faculty at Teachers College\, Columbia University for over four decades\, as both the Co-director of the Literacy Specialist Program and as the Richard Robinson Professor of Children’s Literature. Dr. Calkins has written 50+ books\, including the widely adopted Units of Study curriculum. Dr. Calkins began her career as a teacher for elementary\, middle\, and high school students\, then joined Don Graves as a researcher on the National Institute of Education’s first major study of children as writers. That research has been credited with transforming the teaching of writing\, bringing writing workshops\, which were once the province of college classrooms\, into K-8 classrooms. For decades since then\, Dr. Calkins has devoted most of her time to leading organizations that aim to support best practices in the teaching of reading and writing. \n \nKaty Wischow is a Staff Developer with The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower. More than a decade ago\, Katy found her own way to her very first Reading & Writing Project Summer Institute\, where she decided she absolutely had to have the Units of Study curriculum. Soon\, she’d transformed her Newark\, NJ middle school classroom into a flourishing writing workshop; her students’ passionate response led Katy to enroll in the Literacy Specialist Program at Teachers College\, Columbia University. Katy has co-authored the book Unlocking the Power of Classroom Talk\, co-written several Units of Study\, and authored the Ida and Jake series in the Jump Rope Readers. Katy is deeply interested in grammar\, writing professionally\, supporting teachers’ writing lives\, and building strong learning cultures in schools and classrooms. \n \nKara Arnold is a Staff Developer with The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower. Kara is best known in their community for her ground-breaking work with upper-grade spelling and phonics. She’s authored a spelling curriculum that includes a pathway of 100+ micro-lessons to help upper-grade students who need explicit lessons in the patterns and rules that inform how spelling works in the English language. Teachers who work with Kara are thrilled with her ability to make language arts education accessible and joyful for all students. She supports teachers as they address the essentials with their students and strives to make learning engaging and exciting. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the ELA Today community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nThe Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower was created out of the pioneering work that Lucy Calkins began over 40 years ago. Inspired by her research\, she developed innovative curricula and methods that transformed the way children learned to write. For decades since\, she has worked with educators to help students become what she always knew them to be: proficient and enthusiastic writers\, readers\, and thinkers. \nToday\, RWP-M remains deeply rooted in this experience\, while also holding true to this spirit of innovation and continuous learning. Lucy Calkins and her team author the Units of Study in Reading\, Writing\, and Phonics and several series of engaging decodable texts. More than authors of curriculum\, at its core\, RWP-M is a community of practice\, a think tank\, and a professional development organization dedicated to transforming the way students learn to read\, write\, and think.

SUMMARY:Creativity in and Out of the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dan Hunter\, author of Learning and Teaching Creativity; Dr. Rex Jung\, President\, Brain and Behavioral Associates\, and Professor\, University of New Mexico; and Hathalee Higgs\, Partner + Co-founder\, Hunter Higgs\nModerated by Michael Campbell\, President\, Advancing Global EDU \nSponsored by H-IQ \nWatch the RecordingListen to the PodcastRead the Article \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nHow do we prepare students for jobs that don’t yet exist using technology that hasn’t been invented? In a world where change is constant\, rapid\, and unpredictable\, the most important skill we can teach students is effective imagination to enable them to adapt to the unexpected. The future requires the imagination that leads to creativity—the one 21st century skill no one teaches. \nThe debate on teaching creativity focuses on what the schools—teachers and administrators—need to do. However\, students do not learn creativity by watching and listening. They learn by generating their own ideas and then exploring those ideas through trial and error. Teaching creativity is like teaching how to ride a bike—you can describe it or guide it\, but eventually\, each individual must learn to ride on their own. Join this edLeader Panel with Dan Hunter\, author of Learning and Teaching Creativity\, Dr. Rex Jung\, neuropsychologist and brain researcher\, and Hathalee Higgs\, partner and co-founder of Hunter Higgs\, to explore creativity including: \n\nHow to generate ideas\nHow to design assignments to improve imagination\nHow to measure creative progress\nHow to improve your own imagination\n\nThis recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to middle and high school teachers\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and gifted and talented program leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDan Hunter is a playwright\, songwriter\, teacher\, and founding partner of Hunter Higgs\, LLC.
