SUMMARY:Building Bridges Between Standards and Instructional Excellence
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kelli Hopfinger\, Former Educator\, Current Math Curriculum Development Manager\, Modern Classrooms Project; and Tom Marlowe\, Former Educator\, Current Math Curriculum Development Manager\, Modern Classrooms Project\nModerated by Samantha du Preez\, Former Educator\, Current Senior Director of Marketing and Community Engagement\, Modern Classrooms Project \nSponsored by The Modern Classrooms Project \nWatch the Recording \nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nEvery time a state adopts new standards\, the same problem crops up. Instructional coaches and curriculum coaches start over\, and teachers are left to break each standard into its parts largely on their own. Admin and classroom educators are not always chasing the same goal\, either. Leaders want proof that students met a standard well enough to show it on a state test. Teachers are asking a different question: Did my students grow? \nThe standards themselves do not always help. The language can be vague or pull in two directions at once\, and even state offices are not always certain what their own standards mean. Experienced teachers fill the gap with judgment built over years. New teachers do not have that judgment yet\, and they rarely have the protected time to build it from scratch. \nThis edWebinar gives school and district leaders a working model for standards deconstruction and mapping. Together\, we deconstruct and consider three different standards mappings\, alignments\, and manipulative options\, in addition to the success criteria to support educators in successful deconstruction. \nLeaders leave with a clear answer to a question their teachers are already asking: Where do I start? This edWebinar is of interest to elementary through high school district and school leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nKelli Hopfinger is a former high school math teacher and curriculum specialist with over 12 years of experience in mathematics education and curriculum design. Guided by the belief that every child is a “math person\,” she is passionate about creating accessible\, equitable instructional materials that empower all students to succeed. Kelli focuses on designing high-quality\, mastery-based resources that support diverse learners and equip educators with tools that enable meaningful learning. Kelli holds a Master of Science in Learning Experience Design and Educational Technology from Western Governors University and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Florida. She is deeply committed to supporting educators through a thoughtfully designed curriculum that prioritizes clarity\, flexibility\, and student-centered learning. Kelli currently lives in Florida and enjoys spending time adventuring with her family\, getting lost in a good book\, or relaxing by the pool when she’s not working. \n \nBased in Cleveland\, Ohio\, Tom Marlowe brings 15 years of experience as a high school math teacher in both public and private school settings. Throughout his teaching career\, Tom developed a strong commitment to student-centered instruction\, with a particular focus on mastery learning. SUMMARY:How Video and AI Close the Gap Between Teacher Training and Teacher Growth
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Tara Kaczorowski\, Ph.D.\, Professor\, Executive Director of Education Programs; Mikki Brooks\, Experienced Educator\, Education Consultant\, Educational Service Unit #3 (NE); and Terry Chvatal\, Director\, Vosaic \nSponsored by Vosaic \nWatch the Recording \nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nEarly-career teacher attrition and inconsistent field supervision share a root cause. Observation and coaching still rely on infrequent\, high-stakes visits that arrive too late to change behavior. This edWebinar brings together perspectives from educator preparation programs and K-12 instructional coaching to explore how AI-enhanced video observation is changing that model at every stage of the educator journey. \nMikki Brooks\, an Education Consultant at Educational Service Unit #3\, brings the K-12 coaching lens. Drawing on her background as an elementary assistant principal\, high school dean of students\, and instructional coach\, along with her work delivering Cognitive Coaching and Adaptive Schools training\, Mikki speaks to what it actually takes to build a coaching culture where video supports growth instead of feeling like surveillance\, and where the current model of observation breaks down before it gets a chance to work. \nDr. Tara Kaczorowski\, Professor and Executive Director of Education Programs at Daemen University\, brings the educator preparation perspective\, speaking to how programs are running clinical supervision at scale\, where AI fits into that work\, and what evidence programs are collecting now for CAEP\, AAQEP\, and state approval bodies that they weren’t collecting before. \nTogether\, the presenters connect these two worlds: the same teacher who is a student teacher in an EPP classroom becomes a new hire a district is trying to retain. The conversation explores what each side wishes the other understood\, and what changes when video evidence follows a teacher from preparation into practice. Viewers leave with: \n\nEvidence-based practices for implementing video observation and coaching in their own context\, whether EPP or K-12\nA clearer picture of how AI-enhanced coaching addresses real gaps in current supervision workflows\nA better understanding of why continuity between pre-service training and in-service coaching matters for teacher effectiveness and retention\n\nWe hope you join us for this candid discussion among practitioners about what’s not working in current models of observation and coaching\, and what a better version could look like. This edWebinar is of interest to school leaders\, district leaders\, and education technology leaders of all grade levels. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Tara Kaczorowski joined the Education Department at Daemen University after previous faculty and administrative experience at Illinois State University. She graduated from University at Buffalo with her Ph.D. in special education and a concentration in instructional technology. Her K-12 teaching experience was as a special education teacher (grades 1-4) in both integrated co-teaching and self-contained settings. Dr. Kaczorowski has taught college courses at the undergraduate\, master’s\, and doctoral levels related to instructional methods in STEM fields\, special education inclusion and collaboration\, assistive/instructional technology\, and research methods. Her primary research areas are in teacher/faculty preparation\, instructional technology\, video-enhanced reflection\, and math/STEM instruction for students with high-incidence disabilities. \n \nMikki Brooks serves as an Education Consultant at Educational Service Unit #3\, where she focuses on coaching and thought partnering with district- and school-based leadership. She presents Cognitive Coaching and Adaptive Schools that build organizational capacity\, self-directed individuals\, and collective efficacy across schools and districts. Mikki’s professional experience is rooted in roles as an elementary assistant principal\, high school dean of students\, and K-12 instructional coach. She also leverages Vosaic to support teacher growth\, engage coaching conversations\, and guide her own professional development. \n \nTerry Chvatal is the Director for Vosaic\, a Nelnet product\, where his career has focused on identifying and scaling new markets and technology solutions for schools. Over the past several years\, Terry has helped bring new\, technology-driven solutions to K-12 and higher education\, including an AI-powered tutoring platform that gives students personalized academic support\, and a childcare management solution built to modernize enrollment\, billing\, and family communication for early childhood programs. Vosaic is a video-based observation and coaching platform that uses AI to help teacher preparation programs and K-12 districts give faster\, more specific feedback to student teachers and in-service teachers alike. Terry brings a business leader’s perspective to the panel\, speaking to why organizations like Nelnet are investing in tools that connect teacher preparation and in-service coaching\, and what it takes to bring innovation from concept to classroom. \nJoin the Professional Learning & Practice community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \n\nVosaic is a video-based coaching and observation platform built for the moments where teaching happens. Coaches\, supervisors\, and instructional leaders use Vosaic to talk through a specific classroom moment with teachers and student teachers\, instead of relying on notes from a single walkthrough. Educator preparation programs use it to give candidates feedback tied to the exact clip a field supervisor is referencing\, even when that supervisor can’t be in the room. AI in Vosaic works quietly in the background\, helping people organize and revisit footage faster\, so more time goes to the conversation and less to logistics. Vosaic works across K-12 districts\, higher ed teacher preparation programs\, education service agencies\, and childcare programs\, wherever adults are trying to help someone grow through their practice. Vosaic is proud to sponsor this edWeb program and support educators working to strengthen instructional practice through video-based reflection\, mentoring\, and collaborative learning.
