SUMMARY:Surprising Insights on the Science of Reading: To Cue or Not to Cue
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Bryan Drost\, Executive Director for Educational Services\, Rocky River City School District (OH); and Dr. Lynne Kulich\, Senior Director of Solutions Engineering\, Renaissance \nSponsored by Renaissance \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThe research is clear: To decode words\, students need explicit and systematic instruction on the relationship between sounds and their corresponding letters. This approach—known as phonics—stands in stark contrast to cueing\, which encourages students to use visual and other cues to identify unknown words in a text. \nDoes this mean that cueing should never be used in the classroom—and that skilled readers never rely on cues? \nView this edWebinar for the answers\, as two literacy experts explore the controversy around cueing\, including an increasing number of statewide bans. Topics include: \n\nWhat is the three-cueing system and why is it ineffective for teaching students how to read?\nIntegrating phonemic awareness and phonics for explicit decoding instruction\nHow and why skilled readers make use of cues—perhaps without even realizing it\nHow technology supports Science-of-Reading-aligned instruction and practice across grade levels\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and reading directors\, coaches\, and interventionists. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nBryan Drost\, Ph.D. is Executive Director for Educational Services at Rocky River City Schools in Ohio. He formerly served as a curriculum director\, principal\, and teacher. He is also an adjunct faculty member at several Ohio colleges\, where he teaches courses in assessment\, instructional design\, school law\, literacy\, and leadership. \n \nLynne Kulich\, Ph.D. is Senior Director of Solutions Engineering at Renaissance and a specialist in early literacy instruction. She is a former professor\, curriculum director\, data coach\, and elementary reading teacher. She is also co-author of the new book The Fluency Development Lesson: Closing the Reading Gap. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the The Science of Reading community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nAs a global leader in education technology operating in more than 100 countries\, Renaissance is committed to providing educators with insights and resources to accelerate growth and help all students build a strong foundation for success.
