SUMMARY:Literacy That Adds Up: How to Align Scales\, Curricula\, and Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jennifer Bowles\, Director of Early Education\, Farmington Municipal Schools (NM); and Nicole Lambson\, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction\, Farmington Municipal Schools (NM) \nSponsored by Level Data \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nOver the past several years\, evidence-based literacy improvement programs have been implemented in districts across the country\, including by Farmington Municipal Schools (FMS) in New Mexico. From adopting a common reading curriculum and revamping their ELA proficiency scales to providing professional development in the Science of Reading\, FMS has done a lot of work over the past three years to raise reading achievement by 10 points. \nNow that the groundwork has been laid\, FMS educators are taking a close look at what’s been successful and where adjustments can be made to continue the momentum and progress. \nDuring this edWebinar\, FMS’s Director of Curriculum and Instruction\, Nicole Lambson\, and Jennifer Bowles\, Director of Early Education\, share how they’re leaning into the data to answer and address questions\, including: \n\nWhat the “must-master” scales are that best predict proficiency\nWhy literacy gains decline in both 5th and 8th grades\nWhy there are performance variations among schools and student sub-groups\nHow to better align classroom grading with state high-stakes assessments\n\nJoin us for tangible takeaways on what to measure\, how to collaborate with principals and teachers\, and how to turn “bubble” students (within a few points of proficient) into literacy success stories. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJennifer Bowles has been with Farmington Municipal Schools for 23 years\, working as a classroom teacher\, school principal\, and district administrator. We provide district leadership teams and administrators with data they can trust: standardized\, validated\, and seamlessly integrated across systems. By connecting every point of information—from enrollment and attendance to IEP service minutes and districtwide purchases—to strategic goals\, we equip leadership teams with the insights they need to measure progress\, align stakeholders\, and maximize student impact. That experience deepened her belief in the transformative power of creativity and the importance of integrating the arts into every classroom. As a result\, she is passionate about providing teachers with vetted\, “grab-and-go” creative lessons they can implement with minimal supplies and preparation. She leads professional development sessions for teachers on how to use the Foundation’s unique Pathways to Creativity program.
