SUMMARY:The First Step to Reading by Third Grade: Solving the Kindergarten Readiness Gap
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Aruna Gilbert\, Executive Vice President and Chief Program and Policy Officer\, Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County; Dr. Hee Jin Bang\, Vice President\, Efficacy Research & Evaluation\, Age of Learning; and Dr. Dan Domenech\, Former Executive Director\, AASA\, The School Superintendents Association \nSponsored by Age of Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nAcross the country\, too many children begin kindergarten already behind in the skills essential for early reading success. By third grade\, the gap only widens—students who start school unprepared are far less likely to meet grade-level expectations and more likely to struggle throughout their academic journey. But what if we could change that trajectory before kindergarten even begins? \n\nThis edWebinar explores how districts\, early learning coalitions\, and educators can address one of the most pressing challenges in education today: ensuring every child is kindergarten ready. National and local leaders discuss what it takes to build strong foundations in literacy\, the evidence behind successful early learning interventions\, and the impact of getting it right from the very start. \nJoin us to learn how your district can take the first step toward ensuring every child enters kindergarten ready to succeed. Key discussion topics include: \n\nWhy kindergarten readiness is one of the most critical\, and overlooked\, determinants of lifelong learning\nWhat rigorous research reveals about early literacy interventions that accelerate student growth\nLessons from Florida’s early learning coalitions on implementing and scaling solutions that work\nPractical strategies district and state leaders can adopt now to close readiness gaps before they widen\nMeasuring what matters: Using data to drive kindergarten readiness outcomes\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK school leaders\, district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nAruna Gilbert serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Program and Policy Officer for the Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County\, where she leads the design\, implementation\, and strategic direction of programs and policy initiatives supporting early childhood education in the region. SUMMARY:Building Reading Fluency: The Role of Rich and Varied Practice
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Carolyn Brown\, Adjunct Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders\, University of Iowa\, and Co-Founder\, Foundations in Learning; and Dr. Carolyn Strom\, Former Teacher\, Current Clinical Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Literacy\, NYU Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education & Human Development\nModerated by Allison Zimmermann\, Former Teacher\, Current CEO\, Foundations in Learning \nSponsored by WordFlight- Foundations in Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nFor years\, the phrase “rich and varied practice” has been used in reading instruction—but often without a clear definition. Explicit\, direct instruction is a cornerstone of the Science of Reading\, but it is in “rich and varied practice” that students consolidate and generalize their learning so that they can become fluent readers. A systematic approach to rich and varied practice is even more critical to our struggling readers\, especially those in upper elementary and middle school. \nTeachers have long asked: What exactly does “rich and varied” practice mean? How do I implement this to help my students build automaticity and fluency? \nIn this edWebinar\, we explore over 60 years of research that sheds light on this important concept. You see how scholars and educators have created and continue to use practical frameworks that explain why this kind of practice works and how to use it effectively in the classroom. \nMost importantly\, you walk away with classroom strategies and tools—based on the latest work from researchers and developers. These tools help you bring “rich and varied practice” to life—developing automaticity\, fluency\, engagement\, deeper learning\, and stronger outcomes. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to elementary and middle school teachers\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \nView Part 2: Building Reading Fluency: The Role of Rich and Varied Practice \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Carolyn Brown has devoted her career to developing tools and testing solutions that optimize language and literacy development for all students. Her areas of specialization are child development\, language acquisition\, and the Science of Reading. \nShe and her husband\, Dr. Jerry Zimmermann\, have co-founded three companies: Breakthrough to Literacy\, the Iowa Language and Literacy Institute\, and Foundations in Learning. Each was organized to advance current science and create solutions to help all children learn to read. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa. \n \nDr. Carolyn Strom is a clinical professor\, reading specialist\, and former first-grade teacher.
