SUMMARY:How to Create Great Courses with Illume\, the World’s Largest Database of Learning Materials
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Diane F. Quandt\, Associate Professor of Education\, College of New Rochelle\nSponsored by Illume Learning \nWe’re sorry but the recording for this edWebinar is no longer available. \nTraditionally\, the process of creating university and high school courses has been extremely time consuming — often consuming dozens and dozens of hours. Moreover\, the results often fail to truly motivate\, stimulate\, and engage students. \nIn this webinar\, learn about Illume\, the world’s largest database of learning materials\, a free resource to help you build great courses. Illume streamlines the course creation process\, dramatically shortening the preparation time for instructors and yielding stimulating and engaging learning materials for students. \nIllume does this by offering the world’s largest database of syllabi; reading lists; course notes; text and trade books; newspaper\, magazine and journal articles; videos; case studies; simulations; problem sets; lecture presentations; and other instructor and student materials.  It has just been introduced and it is completely free for all to use. While it is designed for university instructors\, high school teachers looking to assign learning materials beyond textbooks will also find it very useful. \nThis webinar showed how to quickly and easily navigate Illume’s enormous database and use its many tools to create the best possible courses to truly motivate\, engage and stimulate your students. This webinar will be of of most interest to college and university instructors\, and also to high school teachers creating high level courses. \nLearn more about Illume. \n  \n \n  \nDr. Diane Quandt has been an Associate Professor of Education at the College of New Rochelle for more than 20 years.  She holds a B.A from Vassar College\, an M.S. from Syracuse University in Special Education\, an M.Ed and Ed.D. from Teachers College of Columbia University in Reading and Learning Disabilities\, and Special Education. \n  \n  \nIllume makes it easy for instructors to (i) view the syllabi\, reading lists\, course notes\, and presentations of their colleagues around the world for ideas\, and (ii) find and evaluate learning materials to assign to their students from the most comprehensive list of materials available anywhere. Moreover\, Illume allows instructors to save material for further review by “Marking It For Review.” Instructors can later go back to see a complete list of learning materials with links to the original source for scheduling.

SUMMARY:Setting the Stage for Reading with Babies and Toddlers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Amy Read\, M.S.\, Program Manager for Early Literacy Outreach\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Early Learning Book Chats community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nBabies come into the world ready to learn. Children need to their parents and caregivers to read\, write\, sing\, talk\, and play with them every day in order for children to be ready for school and to be ready to learn how to read. These activities not only help children develop in all areas – physical\, cognitive\, and social/emotional – they help build the foundation for later reading success. With very young children\, ages birth to 24 months\, we are not talking about teaching children how to read. The focus is on laying a strong foundation for later reading which is early literacy. Early literacy is what children know about communication\, language (verbal and nonverbal)\, reading\, and writing before they can actually read or write. The way we do these activities with young children makes a difference in the development of early literacy skills. \nThis webinar offered a summary of early literacy as it applies to babies and toddlers\, and offers suggestions for ways to support early literacy in enjoyable ways while sharing books throughout the day. The target audience for this webinar includes administrators\, educators\, and caregivers for young children ages birth to 24 months. \n  \nAmy Read is an Early Literacy Program Manager for a Public Library system. In this position she provides early literacy professional development programs for Early Childhood Educators as well as parents. She has a Master of Science in Child Development and Family Relations and in over 23 years of experience she has worked in a variety of child and family related programs. She has taught a variety of Early Childhood Education/Child Development courses for Universities and Community Colleges. Additionally\, she has worked as an Early Interventionist with families whose children had developmental delays or at-risk behavior and was a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for many years. She has presented workshops and training programs at national\, regional\, and state conferences on a wide array of child\, family\, and education issues. She is a co-author of a children’s book\, Scribbleball: The Crazy ABC Book! \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING \n \n  \nGryphon House\, Inc. is an award-winning publisher of early childhood resources for teachers and parents. \n  \n  \nSaveSave

As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nInformation enthusiasts have been talking about how to best curate resources for some time\, but the tools for curation keep changing. While commercial products\, come\, go\, and/or are swallowed up by larger companies\, edtech and digital content providers are developing an increasing number of tools for learners of all ages to store and retrieve collected resources. Some of these solutions address libraries’ “container problem” – how to provide access to a collection in its entirety in a user-friendly delivery system. Some provide educators portals for warehousing instructional materials. Others address students’ curation needs. \nIn this session\, the presenter shared an array of curation solutions\, their strengths and limitations\, and strategies to morph tools and create workarounds where services still need work. This webinar recording will benefit grades 3-12 school librarians\, classroom teachers\, curriculum leaders\, and public librarians. \n  \n \n  \nMichelle Luhtala is the Head Librarian at New Canaan High School in New Canaan\, Connecticut. SUMMARY:Developmentally Appropriate Practice and Music Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lili M. Levinowitz\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Music Education at Rowan University and Director of Research for the Center for Music and Young Children\nSponsored by Music Together \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nDevelopmentally Appropriate Practice is the path to supporting young children’s growth and learning throughout the early years. Did you know that research in music education also points to the importance of Developmentally Appropriate Practice when teaching and making music with children? \nIn this webinar\, learn about the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s definition of Developmentally Appropriate Practice and the 3 core considerations – and how these can be adapted to apply to early childhood music education. Developmentally appropriate songs and teaching strategies that best support children’s music development in the early childhood classroom were introduced. Even if you are not a music educator\, this recorded session will provide you with a new lens through which to look at Developmentally Appropriate Practice in early childhood education. \nJoin the Arts & Music in Early Learning community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming webinars\, to view past webinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and for access to more resources. \n  \n \nLili M. Levinowitz\, Ph.D.\, is Professor of Music Education at Rowan University. She is the coauthor of the early childhood music and movement program Music Together and Director of Research for the Center for Music and Young Children. Lili is considered a national authority on early childhood music and is actively involved in teaching very young children as well as graduate students. Her articles appear frequently in professional journals and popular magazines. She received her M.M. and Ph.D. from Temple University; her B.M. from Westminster Choir College. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING \n  \nAt Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.
