SUMMARY:Music Play: Before You Play Music\, You Must Play WITH Music!
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Devi Borton\, M.A.\, Early Childhood Music Specialist\, Mentor\, and Teacher Trainer at Music Together Worldwide\nSponsored by Music Together \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Music in Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nBefore young children can play (i.e.\, perform) music they must play with music! While most of us think of music class as teacher-led songs\, a developmentally appropriate music education experience fosters child-initiated music play and provides the opportunity for individual children to focus on their own musical ideas – at all ages. Research also highlights how play is an important part of children’s development of the skills and dispositions that are essential to learning and classroom engagement. One such type of play activity that can support a child’s development and learning is music play. \nIn this webinar\, early childhood music specialist Devi Borton explores how to create a child-centered\, playful music environment that encourages and values children’s own ways of making music\, allows each child to take ownership of his or her music learning\, and affords each teacher an opportunity to maximize the learning benefits of music play. Devi demonstrates some great songs that they can use to provide children with a rich musical “playground.” This recorded webinar will benefit educators working with toddlers\, preschoolers\, and kindergarteners. \nAbout the Presenter   \nDevi Borton has an extensive background in vocal performance\, dance\, and acting\, performing in numerous local theatre productions during her youth and starring on a locally produced television show in the Bay Area in California for four years. She began her adult professional career in the healing arts as a bodyworker\, birth educator\, doula\, and certified infant massage instructor. Devi has been a Music Together teacher and center director at FAM JAM! in Santa Fe\, NM\, since 2003. With a passion for bringing music to children and families in need\, she has been the Special Applications Coordinator and mentor for Music Together Worldwide since 2010. As a Music Together Teacher Trainer\, she trains new Music Together teachers across the globe and runs professional development workshops for current teachers. Devi holds a B.A. in Dance from UCLA\, an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from JFK University\, and is Music Together Certification Level II. \nJoin the Music in Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n At Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.

SUMMARY:Building a School Library in Kabul\, Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sajia Darwish\, Junior at Mount Holyoke College\nSponsored by Girls Thinking Global \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Girls Thinking Global community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nThis webinar tells the story of the Baale Parwaz Library project that was co-founded by Sajia Darwish\, a junior at Mount Holyoke College\, who has been studying in the U.S with the support of AGFAF\, so she can return to help the Afghan people. \nSajia tells the incredible story of how she returned to her country\, and in one summer\, built a library at her former school\, Mohammad Asif Mayel School – a school of 3\,500 students that had no library. Within the first week home\, Sajia secured the interest of the principal and was also able to obtain the approval of the Ministry of Education to enclose space offered by the school to build and operate a school library. There were many challenges\, but Sajia completed the library in a very short time\, and named it Baale Parwaz (wings to fly) Library. \nSajia has said of her experience\, “Working on this project has been one of the most challenging and exhilarating experiences. It has fostered personal growth in many areas of my life. I have not only been able to connect with the Afghan people on a much deeper level than any other one of my stays in Kabul during the last seven years. But on a larger scale\, I have also learned how to create a counter model for the patriarchic society of Afghanistan through first empowering myself and then other girls and women.” \nThe library opened August 21\, 2016 with over 250 guests and officials in attendance. Here are some of the highlights of the library program thus far: \n\n400-500 young Afghan girls use the library daily\nThe library has over 2\,500 books and 100 reference books selected by the teachers and numerous circulation books (novels\, story books\, etc.)\nSeveral teachers use the library daily to prepare to teach their classes\nA local poet has donated 1\,000 digitized books that students will be able to read in the library on tablets AGFAF will provide\nSeveral reading clubs have been organized by grade across the grades\nThe students in the older reading club (7th-11th graders) have begun their own outreach program to the street children of Kabul\, most of whom are in 6th grade or younger and work on the streets to help support their families\nThey are working to make BPL digital! They plan to provide internet service\, computers and training in digital literacy\n\nLibrarians will be particularly interested in the story of building and growing this library. Sajia is very interested in making connections with librarians who have ideas for how they can continue to grow the program and make the most use of their limited resources for such a large number of students. \nAny educator who wants to be inspired by what can be accomplished by a young women with dedication to help her people should watch this recorded webinar! \nAbout the Presenter \nSajia Darwish was born in the year Taliban took over Afghanistan and never left the country until she was 13. In 2009\, she was one of ten students selected to attend the Seeds of Peace summer camp in Maine. That year after returning home she applied for high schools and got full scholarship to attend The Ethel Walker School in Connecticut. In 2014\, she enrolled in Mount Holyoke College and is currently a junior. \n  \nJoin the Girls Thinking Global community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \nGirls Thinking Global (GTG) is a global community of organizations serving girls and young women by leveraging technology to create a collaborative space that connects best practices\, knowledge\, and expertise.

SUMMARY:Personalizing Instruction Through the Library
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Michelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair\, New Canaan High School\, CT\nSponsored by Mackin Educational Resources \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Emerging Tech community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nStudents today tend to customize their personal digital environments to suit their own interests\, abilities\, and desires. It is therefore increasingly difficult to engage them in “one size fits all” learning environments. This is just one of many reasons school districts and policymakers strive to address the distinct learning needs\, interests\, aspirations\, or cultural backgrounds of individual students – personalized learning. Michelle Luhtala (a 2015 Library Journal Mover & Shaker) explores how school librarians can enhance their learning communities’ capacity for personalized learning experiences through collaboration\, instructional partnership\, direct instruction\, professional development\, and leadership. \n \n  \nMichelle Luhtala is the Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut and was one of five school librarians named as a “Mover and Shaker” by Library Journal in 2015. SUMMARY:Is it Misbehavior or Just Developmentally-Delayed Behavior? Assessing Young Children’s Behavior Through a Developmental Window
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Pamela Phelps\, Early Childhood Consultant and Director & Owner of The Creative Pre-School\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Classroom Management for Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nYoung children hit\, throw things\, empty blocks off shelving and pour the water on the floor from the water table. Many teachers view this as misbehavior and put children on time out or prevent them from going out on the playground. When children are pulled from the group and punished\, they are not learning new and useful behavior skills that will help them exhibit more socially acceptable behaviors in the future. \nLearn a new way to view this kind of behavior as well as teaching strategies to use instead of punishment that will help young children move from socially inappropriate behaviors to more appropriate behaviors. Early Childhood Consultant Dr. Pamela Phelps discussed child development and demonstrated how to view children’s behaviors from a different developmental window. \nShe shared: \n\nHow to assess children’s behaviors from a developmental window rather than as misbehavior that needs to be punished\nEffective techniques to implement to help young children learn appropriate social behaviors.\n\nEducators and administrators working with birth through kindergarten children are invited to this event. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Pamela Phelps has a Ph.D. in early childhood education and has owned and operated her own early childhood center for over 45 years. The Creative Pre-School is located in Tallahassee\, FL. She is the author of the Beyond Centers and Circle Time Curriculum series and Let’s Build\, a book on the value of quality book experiences for young children. She has trained across the United States\, the Bahamas\, Indonesia\, Singapore\, and Japan. She most recently received the Nancy Thomas Award for outstanding work statewide on behalf of young children and their families. \n  \nJoin the Classroom Management for Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n Kaplan Early Learning Company is a leading international provider of products and services that enhance children’s learning.

Maybe they’re English learners. Maybe they have diagnosed learning disabilities or behavioral issues. Maybe they’re underachieving for reasons that are unknown. They have been overlooked\, underserved\, or frustrated\, and they’re not learning as they should. Until now. Until you. \nIn this webinar\, Doug Fisher presented a thoughtful and practical approach to achieving breakthrough success with linguistically and culturally diverse students who struggle in school. Combining elements of the SIOP® Model and the FIT Teaching® approach\, Doug shared how he and his fellow authors Jana Echevarría and Nancy Frey have taken stock of what we know about excellent instruction and distilled it into five guiding principles. Based on their book\, How to Reach the Hard to Teach: Excellent Instruction for Those Who Need It Most\, Doug walked through each of these guiding principles to support struggling students: \n\nSet high expectations\nProvide equitable access to the core curriculum through differentiation\nUse ongoing assessment and real-time data to inform instruction\nAttend to language development – both English and academic\nCreate a supportive classroom climate\n\nLearn specific practices associated with each principle and how to employ these practices in your classrooms\, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn and to receive optimal support for their learning. All PreK-12+ educators interested in improving student literacy outcomes are invited to attend this engaging event. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Douglas Fisher is the Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College in San Diego\, California. SUMMARY:Beyond Consequences: A New Look at Fairness and How to Reduce the Use of Discipline Techniques in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Nancy Bruski\, MA\, LCSW\, Early Childhood Consultant\, Wise Choice Guidance\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Classroom Management for Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nTeachers often focus on the search for the perfect consequence to challenging behaviors in the classroom\, rather than on being strategic and empathic in engaging children’s cooperation. Young children don’t learn positive behavior through being sent away from play centers. Rather\, they learn from teachers’ coaching them and intervening in play situations to resolve conflicts. \nIn this webinar\, look at the concept of “fairness” in a new way that enables teachers to recognize that every child has an equal right to have his/her needs met\, but not all children’s needs are the same. This strategy frees teachers to make small exceptions and set a tone in the classroom for relaxed acceptance that we are all working on learning skills on different timeframes and do not all find the same things easy or hard. \nEarly Childhood Consultant Nancy Bruski provided a framework for creating compassionate classrooms in which teachers are free to meet individual needs while maintaining group cohesion and validating children’s feelings so that each child feels like a valued member of the classroom community. Specific strategies for accomplishing these goals will be provided during this live\, interactive event. \nThe session is designed for preschool and kindergarten educators. \nAbout the Presenter \nNancy Bruski is a clinical social worker with over 35 years of experience providing therapeutic services to young children and families\, as well as teacher training\, parent education\, and mental health consulting. Her passion is to help parents and teachers become more psychologically sensitive to children. Nancy enhances parents’ and teachers’ skills through providing a philosophy of teaching and raising children\, as well as providing specific intervention strategies that support the development of children’s social competence\, responsibility\, and self-esteem. She is a frequent presenter of workshops and consultations throughout the Chicago area and across the United States. Parents and teachers often express their appreciation for her detailed and specific strategies that they can take back to their homes and classrooms and begin implementing right away. She is the author of The Insightful Teacher: Reflective Strategies to Shape Your Early Childhood Classroom. Nancy has also worked in a variety of mental health settings as well as at a nationally accredited full-day preschool program\, and as a faculty member at two colleges in the Chicago area. \nJoin the Classroom Management for Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n Kaplan Early Learning Company is a leading international provider of products and services that enhance children’s learning.

Teachers\, however\, don’t have to be masters of JavaScript or Ruby to give students the tools they need. Concepts like computational and design thinking\, or connecting to the language of code to solve problems and create content\, don’t have to be as complicated (or intimidating) as they sound. \nThis webinar focused on ways you can start incorporating these elements into your classes without having to attend a three-month coding boot camp first yourself. James Denby and Robin Ulster shared: \n\nAccessible tools\nA problem-solving approach\nStrategies to inspire and challenge students (and yourself) to approach problems like coders\n\nThis webinar will benefit educators and administrators. \nAbout the Presenters \nJames Denby is a Curriculum and course designer for IdeaDrivenEducation and Eduro Learning. He is also a Common Sense Ambassador. James has had the opportunity to work with teachers and students in North and South America\, Europe\, and Asia. He sees technology as a tool to unleash creativity and give voice to powerful ideas. Rather than simply being adept consumers of content\, James believes we can help students become creators and content makers through coding and design. These tools can put students at the forefront of tackling the problems they see around them. \nRobin Ulster is a Curriculum and course designer for IdeaDrivenEducation and Eduro Learning. Robin is a teacher and workshop leader who believes in the potential of technology to give voice to and empower individuals and groups. She has worked with students and teachers in Canada\, the United States\, Turkey\, Colombia\, Switzerland\, Monaco\, and Thailand during her 20+ year teaching career. Robin wants to break down barriers so that all learners feel empowered to use technology to solve problems in society and daily life. \nJoin the Digital Learning & Leadership community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \nCommon Sense Education provides teachers and schools with free research-based classroom tools to help students harness technology for learning and life. To relieve the symptoms\, we must first treat the cause – a fixed mindset where students believe that they are bad at math and will never get it. In this webinar\, Leland Kriegh explored the reasons why we need to focus on building a math mindset within each student before we focus on specific skills. He also shared five resources to help you develop your students’ math mindset and how you can foster this in the math classroom and outside-the-classroom programs. This webinar will benefit all K-12 math educators\, especially those teaching in K-8; and administrators\, including principals\, assistant principals\, superintendents\, district administrators\, and curriculum directors. \nAbout the Presenter \nLeland Kriegh is a Professional Development and Implementation Specialist at DreamBox Learning.
