SUMMARY:Closing the Attendance Impact Gap Part 1: 5 Gap-Filling Strategies for Solving the Attendance Paradox
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kate Pechacek\, Former Teacher\, Current K12 Strategic Consultant\, No Isolation; and Roland Jones\, Former Teacher\, Current K12 Partnerships\, No Isolation \nSponsored by No Isolation \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nOver the past several years\, school districts have made significant progress in building strong attendance systems. Clear processes\, tiered supports\, data monitoring\, and cross-functional teams are now in place in many districts\, and leaders can rightly say they have a strategy. And yet\, improvements in chronic absence have not kept pace with the effort invested. \nThis first edWebinar in the four-part Closing the Attendance Impact Gap series explores the attendance paradox facing K–12 systems today: while attendance structures and processes have improved\, they often produce only modest gains because the students most in need of support are frequently not present for those systems to reach. When students are physically absent or emotionally disengaged\, traditional interventions alone have limited impact. \nDesigned for district and school leaders\, this session introduces five gap-filling strategies that complement existing attendance systems by addressing what is often missing—connection\, belonging\, and readiness to return\, particularly during periods of absence. Viewers examine how attendance challenges have evolved\, why system strengthening alone can have plateaued results\, and how districts are extending their reach to students who cannot consistently attend in person. \nViewers: \n\nUnderstand why strong attendance systems can still yield limited gains\nIdentify five practical strategies to close attendance impact gaps\nExplore how connection and belonging influence attendance outcomes\n\nViewers leave with actionable insights to strengthen attendance outcomes by reaching students whom traditional approaches struggle to reach. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to school leaders\, district leaders\, and teachers of all grade levels. \nView part two: 3 Steps to Maximize Return on Attendance\, and What Absence Really Costs\nView part three: 3 Strategies to Build Belonging – the Key to Attendance Today and Every Day After\nView part four: Completing the Missing Pieces of Your Attendance System \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nKate Pechacek serves as a K–12 Strategic Advisor to systems-improving education technology organizations and school districts\, including No Isolation\, and is the founder and CEO of OpendoorsEd. She began her 30-year career in education as a secondary mathematics teacher\, serving for 15 years before holding multiple site- and district-level leadership roles in curriculum\, instruction\, assessment\, and MTSS across districts nationwide. She then spent nearly a decade in education technology before founding OpendoorsEd. Kate is an internationally recognized speaker\, including at the 2025 World Inclusion Congress in Almaty\, Kazakhstan\, and is passionate about systemic school improvement. \n \nRoland Jones brings a unique perspective to educational innovation\, bridging formal teaching credentials with deep expertise in technology adoption and digital transformation. SUMMARY:Bring the Science of Reading to Life Through Student Discussions
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Mitchell Brookins\, Former Teacher\, Current Educational Consultant\, Brookins Consulting; Lisa Pagano\, Director of Advanced Studies\, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (NC); and Teri Laliberte\, Former Teacher\, Current Assistant Director of Professional Learning\, Great Books Foundation \nSponsored by The Great Books Foundation \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThis edWebinar is for educators and school leaders who believe that true literacy growth happens not only through decoding and fluency\, but also through the power of purposeful conversation. Together\, we explore how structured\, academically rigorous discussions deepen comprehension\, build vocabulary\, and bring the Science of Reading to life in every classroom. \nWe begin with the metaphor of the teacher as conductor—a powerful way to reimagine classroom dialogue. Instead of “letting discussion happen\,” teachers orchestrate it: guiding\, supporting\, and amplifying student voices in harmony. You learn how to design and facilitate rich discussions that strengthen foundational skills and engage all learners\, including those who are struggling readers. \nNext\, we connect discussion practices to Science-of-Reading-aligned routines\, including active listening\, vocabulary development\, fluency work\, and structured annotation. You see how these elements work together to create confident\, thoughtful readers who understand deeply and speak with evidence. \nFinally\, we turn from classroom practice to schoolwide transformation. You learn how discourse can become a cultural pillar—elevating academic talk across grade levels\, uniting teachers around shared methods\, and sustaining literacy growth over time. \nViewers leave with: \n\nA clear vision of the teacher as conductor—how to intentionally orchestrate discussion for deeper comprehension\nPractical strategies for connecting reading science to authentic student discourse\nTools for using annotation\, fluency practice\, and evidence-based questioning to strengthen engagement and understanding\nLeadership insights for scaling rich discourse across classrooms and schools\n\nJoin us to experience how the power of Shared Inquiry—when paired with the Science of Reading—can create vibrant classrooms where every student has a voice and every text comes alive. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K–12 teachers\, literacy coaches\, school leaders\, and anyone eager to bridge the Science of Reading with the art of Shared Inquiry. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Mitchell Brookins is a nationally recognized educational consultant with 20+ years in K–12 as a teacher\, coach\, administrator\, district leader\, and thought leader.
