SUMMARY:The Science of Reading is Necessary but Insufficient: Enter the Three-Sciences Framework
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Linda Diamond\, Former Educator\, Current Executive Director\, Evidence Advocacy Center; and Dr. Paige C. Pullen\, Former Educator\, Current Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer\, Mindset CoPilot\nModerated by Dr. Katy Cortelyou\, Former Teacher\, Current Senior Regional Director\, Collaborative Classroom \nSponsored by Collaborative Classroom \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nLiteracy success requires literacy science\, instructional science\, and learning science. However\, we often focus on just literacy science—and then wonder why our best-intentioned efforts don’t consistently lead to student success. In this edWebinar\, Dr. Paige Pullen and Linda Diamond discuss the new Three-Sciences Framework and illuminate these three essential sciences for achieving durable literacy teaching and learning results: \n\nWhat we teach: Are we teaching all components of literacy science?\nHow we instruct: Is our instruction designed and delivered to ensure that students learn to mastery and retain their learning?\nHow we learn: Are we using what cognitive science tells us about how all humans learn?\n\nViewers learn about: \n\nClarification on evidence-based practices: We review the Science of Reading (literacy science) and explain why it is distinct from—yet essential for—effective instructional design.\nThe three-part harmony: Learn about the vital role of the following components and how they must work together:\n\nLearning Science (how cognitive research informs us about how learning happens)\nInstructional Science (how research on effective instruction informs best practices)\nLiteracy Science (what research tells us about the essential components of developing proficient reading and writing)\n\n\nHow to address gaps in effective instruction: Understand why the cohesive\, integrated framework of the three interrelated sciences is crucial for solving major issues in commercial curriculum design and educator preparation.\nMaking learning stick: Discover practical ways the relationship among the three sciences clarifies how to deliver instruction that ensures students truly retain and apply new knowledge.\nBridging research to practice: Leave with the conceptual clarity needed to confidently evaluate curricula\, drive strong instruction\, and ensure all parts of your literacy practice are working seamlessly.\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nLinda Diamond has dedicated her career to teaching children to read\, particularly those with word-reading difficulties like dyslexia. SUMMARY:A Math Education Game Changer: Assessing What Really Counts
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jay McTighe\, Author and Consultant\, McTighe and Associates Consulting; and Jay Meadows\, Experienced Educator\, Current CEO\, Exemplars \nSponsored by Exemplars \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nFeaturing special guest speaker Jay McTighe. \nWhat does high-quality student work look like in today’s math classroom? The recent versions of mathematics standards (e.g.\, NCTM\, CCSS\, TEKS) emphasize the development of mathematical reasoning\, problem-solving strategies\, and associated habits of mind (e.g.\, precision\, perseverance) along with computational accuracy. In addition\, many schools and districts have adopted a Portrait of a Graduate that identifies cross-disciplinary competencies that are valued in the modern world (e.g.\, creativity\, ability to work effectively in teams\, responsible citizenship\, communication using various media). Such learning outcomes have significant implications for mathematics instruction as well as for assessment practices. \nIn this edWebinar\, Jay McTighe and Jay Meadows explore what math teaching and assessment should look like in today’s schools for students to achieve these valued outcomes. Jay and Jay make the case for the increased use of authentic math tasks—on both large-scale\, end-of-the-year accountability tests and on classroom assessments—to measure what really matters and promote more engaging and relevant instruction. \nThey investigate the game-changing potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform mathematics assessment to enable educators to efficiently and effectively gauge all valued outcomes\, not just those easiest and cheapest to test. They describe TRISTAN\, an AI tool capable of reading students’ handwritten responses to open-ended tasks that ask students to show their thinking\, not simply select an answer from a given set of options. \nIt is now possible to transform the way we teach and assess mathematics towards what really counts! This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJay McTighe is a veteran educator and accomplished author\, having co-written 18 books\, including the award-winning and best-selling Understanding by Design® series with Grant Wiggins. His books have been translated into 14 languages. Jay has also written more than 50 book chapters\, articles\, and blogs\, and has been published in leading journals\, including Educational Leadership (ASCD)\, Edutopia\, and Education Week. Jay has an extensive background in professional development and is a regular speaker at state\, national\, and international conferences. He has made presentations in 48 states within the United States\, in seven Canadian provinces\, and internationally in 41 countries on six continents. Jay received his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary\, earned his master’s degree from the University of Maryland\, and completed post-graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University. \n \nJay Meadows is the Chief Executive Officer of Exemplars\, a leading force in redefining how students learn to think mathematically. SUMMARY:Building Reading Fluency: The Role of Rich and Varied Practice - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Carolyn Brown\, Adjunct Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders\, University of Iowa\, and Co-Founder\, Foundations in Learning; and Dr. Carolyn Strom\, Former Teacher\, Current Clinical Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Literacy\, NYU Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education & Human Development\nModerated by Allison Zimmermann\, Former Teacher\, Current CEO\, Foundations in Learning \nSponsored by WordFlight- Foundations in Learning \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nFor years\, the phrase “rich and varied practice” has been used in reading instruction—but often without a clear definition. Explicit\, direct instruction is a cornerstone of the Science of Reading\, but it is in “rich and varied practice” that students consolidate and generalize their learning so that they can become fluent readers. The specification of “rich and varied practice” is long overdue. A systematic and structured approach to practice must incorporate the learning principles that support the development of complex and automatic skills. This approach is especially critical and timely for our struggling readers in upper elementary and middle school. \nThis edWebinar presents Part 2\, which will focus on the impact of elaboration\, rehearsal\, and desirable difficulties on learning\, memory\, and retrieval. Viewers leave with classroom strategies and tools to bring “rich and varied practice” to life\, and learn how to increase student engagement\, accelerate fluency\, and strengthen long-term comprehension. Join us as we discuss the development of automaticity\, fluency\, engagement\, deeper learning\, and stronger outcomes. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to elementary and middle school teachers\, librarians\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \nView Part 1: Building Reading Fluency: The Role of Rich and Varied Practice \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Carolyn Brown has devoted her career to developing tools and testing solutions that optimize language and literacy development for all students.
